Echo and the Bunnymen – The Killing Moon Lyrics 11 years ago
I'm all but certain this song is inspired by the play Bodas De Sangre (Blood Weddings) by Federico Garcia Lorca, or it is an overwhelming coincidence if not.

I'll look at the verses first, then the chorus;

The first verse, I think is about Death (Death appears as a beggar woman in the play) 'Under blue moon I saw you, so soon you'll take me up in your arms'

The second verse is more about Leonardo's feelings for The Bride (In the play) - The Bride is to be married to a son of a wealthy family, but she has fallen in love with Leonardo, who returns her feelings. Due to the social outrage that would be caused if the Bride were to attempt a relationship with someone whose family is in such dire straits as Leonardo's, she must continue with the wedding. At the wedding, the two elope and flee to a nearby wood. However the moon and Death work together to let the Groom catch up with Leonardo and kill him. The moon shines brighter so that the Groom can achieve this, hence the song title.

The chorus:
Fate Vs Will is the main theme of the play, not just in Leonardo and the Bride's ill-fated romance, but also several other sub-plots of the play.

Radiohead – I Will. (No Man's Land.) Lyrics 13 years ago
The abortion interpretation is an interesting idea, although I'm not sure about that...

I think it is inspired, at least in part, by the Amiriyah shelter bombing, which, although happened about a year before I was born so I can only go on history archives, was the 'accidental' bombing of a refugee bunker in the gulf war by American pilots. The US claimed to have received intelligence that the bunker was a military base. Hundreds of civilians were killed.

The lyrics are really quite painful; this depressed Thom Yorke a lot at the time, apparently, and although published 12 years after the event, encapsulates the horror of it, IMO.

The first part is the Idea of protecting your family during war time;

"I will lay me down in a bunker underground. I won't let this happen to my children."

"Meet the real world coming out of your shell" may well be a criticism of the US military; ie, these are people with ordinary lives that you have killed; shell referring to the bomb/missile here.

"White Elephants" Could be how Yorke thinks the Americans are seen by the Iraqi civillians, or another name for the bombs/missiles.

"Sitting ducks" Is the most powerful line for me. It has less of a stress than the previous line, which portrays the hopelessness of it. It makes me think of how all those people went to the shelter for safety and ended being bombed anyway, in contrast to the protection of the first line.

"I will rise up" Could be how Yorke felt at the time, or the next logical step after such a tragedy, but then is stalled, the voice falls back and is lower here, it could be Yorke or the parent of the bombed remembering a horrific image of a dead child.

Muse – Hyper Music Lyrics 13 years ago
I wonder if this song is about Britain's special relationship with the USA?

"Your Golden lies feed my role" could be a reference to America's manipulation of information to force the hand of the British Government.

"You wanted more than I was worth" Britain just to help the USA get oil

"You think I was scared, and you needed proof" Bullying the British Govt into doing the American govts dirty work perhaps?

"Who really cares anymore, who restrains," may be a reference to 1984, where people don't seem to care about what's happening to them and don't resist it, and could be linking that to the apathy about politics despite there's a lot of corruption going on.

Of course the "I don't want you, and I never did" could refer to anything, but it makes sense to be Bellamy saying he didn't want the "special relationship" and perhaps changing it to "I don't love you" could be a joke about it being a relationship.

Just my thoughts, awesome song.

I wonder if there could be a link to the sunrise and sunset of relationships... Maybe the sun has set on a relationship (his closest friend) and it doesn't rise, as there's no going back, hence it's 4am forever...

Muse – Neutron Star Collision (Love Is Forever) Lyrics 14 years ago
Wait my earlier rant wasn't enough.

Having read earlier comments, I feel the need to write more.

I don't care what film this song has been released from, I hate it because it is shockingly soft, mainstream, commercialised and well just not very good.

The Muse that wrote "Uno" "Cave" "Showbiz" "Muscle Museum" "Citizen Erased" "Hyper Music" "Plug in Baby" "Bliss" "New Born" "Ashamed" "Dead Star" "In Your World" "Space Dementia" "Darkshines" "Hysteria" "Time is Running Out" "Apocalypse Please" "Knights of Cydonia" "Take a Bow" and "Uprising" were the alternative exciting energy filled rockers that me and legions of other Muse fans had come to love and revere.

The jokers that are saying that they love this song and want go see Muse because of this are not Muse fans, but twilight fans disguised as Muse fans serving only to ruin the rock gods that existed before.

I wish there were some way of separating this new Muse and letting the Twilight fans indulge in their soft pop radio friendly pathetic excuse for rock music with them from the older (or in fact younger) Muse before they sold out. Then everybody would be happy.

So that you know just what sort of no-nonsense geniune bloke I am, allow me to say a few more words.

Twilight is a bag of shite

Muse are an amazing band

Trying to helplessly polish themselves, twilight enlist the help of Muse who foolishly think that this will increase their fanbase, forgetting that with daft moves like this they will actually lose the fans they had before.

If by any chance, the old Muse has not been killed and lives in hiding from the commercial dragon then let them hear this final message from me.

"No-one's gonna take me alive
The time has come to make things right
You and I must fight for our rights
You and I must fight to survive"

I completely agree with what you're saying... I'm going to see Muse in september, but I wish I was going to see them in the Hullabaloo era, apart from Knights of Cydonia, since Absolution they've not impressed me as much, although still been damn good, but Neutron Star Collision takes the biscuit for naffness.

In short, here is a perfect example of a band killed by commerciality.

Muse – Neutron Star Collision (Love Is Forever) Lyrics 14 years ago
I can sum up this song in three simple words: Soft as shite.

Listen to their first single (Uno) and compare it with this. In Uno it's quite a disturbed sound, the vocals are angry and resentful and it has the typical rock us vs the world mentality. Along the way they've made the transition from rock band to pop band and killed the energy they used to have.

I can put up with Unintended fine, although it does go a bit soft, starlight can get on my nerves after a while, but this is just too much. I like most if not all of Muse's other songs, but this has taken them down a few pegs in my opinion.

The sad thing is that I'm going to see them live in Manchester, and I can't wait, it will be awesome, but if they play this then they'll get rid of another better song to do so, and that is a crying shame.

I can't stand the nutters who avidly follow the Twilight films nor the films themselves, as a self-respecting bloke I will never willingly watch them or associate myself with them in anyway (except through listening to Muse), but if you've discovered Muse through Twilight then good for you, your life is enriched as a result. But for Muse to go and sell out to that franchise like this comes as a real blow. I know I'm not the only one who is annoyed by this single.

Right, rant over, just felt the need to play keyboard warrior for a short while to convey my distaste at this song. Normally I don't care enough to feel the need to be an online pillock but this poor song deserves every inch of my ire.

Right, rant really over this time.

Muse – Knights of Cydonia Lyrics 14 years ago
The beginning sounds quite a lot like Telstar by the Tornadoes a band whose rhythm Guitarist, George Bellamy, is Matt's father. Some people have suggested that this might be a tribute to him, but I wonder if it actually mocks him in some way.

If wikipedia is to be believed, Matt's parents split up when he was in his teenage years, I can't remember who he went to live with, but it wasn't his dad, I'm not sure if it was his mum, or grandparents etc. So there could perhaps be a lot of tension.

The title "Knights of Cydonia" suggests perhaps that this song is set in a distant future where Matt and his dad are the last 2 survivors perhaps, and they need to settle their differences.

"Come ride with me through the veins of history" Asing his dad to relive the break-up?
"I'll show you a God who falls asleep on the job" Maybe he respected his dad a lot (saw him as God) until the break-up when he left young Matt to fend for himself perhaps?
"How can we win when fools can be kings?" Matt's resentment of his parents' control?
"Don't waste your time or time will waste you" A (perhaps unpleasant) reminder to his father that he's growing old now.

"No-one's going to take me alive" He's not going to budge until this is over.
"The time has come to make things right" They need to settle their differences,
"You and I must fight for our rights" He and his father may be united by a common foe
"You and I must fight to survive" He and his father must make up because neither of them can go through this alone.

I don't know what Matt's relationship with his dad is, and if he ever read this he may be completely insulted and say that he and his dad get on just fine, but the line "The time has come to make things right" is what really makes me think.

I'll end on something we can all agree on, it's a bloody amazing song, nothing short of Genius, starts of quite quirkily, but by the end becomes quite dark and apocalyptic (Dom (drummer) once described the riff as "chilling") This song convinced me to become a lead guitarist, as these were the first riffs/licks I tried to play I couldn't do it at first but I kept and still do keep plugging away at the song, and being able to play along with this generates a buzz like no other.

One of my favourite songs of all time, let alone just Muse. By far and away my favourite Muse song, and if I can sit and listen to great songs such as Citizen Erased, Plug in Baby, New Born, Bliss, TIRO, SBH and so on and think "good, but nowhere near as good as Knights of Cydonia" then for me it's an insanely good song.

Soz for the essay, that is all :P

Radiohead – Just Lyrics 14 years ago
To me I think that he's singing about a friend of his who is in an on-off relationship with an arsehole, maybe he likes whoever she is, maybe she doesn't want him as he's a creep (see what I did there) etc.

Thom doesn't like the bloke, referring to him as a stink. There are sexual innuendoes aplenty in this song: "Comes like a comet" "Suckered you but not your friends" The holy cow bit may be saying that this bloke will try to convince the girl that she is the love of his life.

"Changed the locks three times" another innuendo.
He'll teach you how to get to purest hell is drawn as a parallel to holy cow, so whatever he promises her, is actually a lie, perhaps.

The chorus shows that she brings it upon herself, and that she should cut this bloke from her life, but doesn't and "that's what really hurts." Which is why I think he has feelings for her, whoever she may be.

Quite likely I'm completely wrong, soz Thom (and the rest of Radiohead), but that's how this song comes across to me.

Lostprophets – A Town Called Hypocrisy Lyrics 14 years ago
This might be completely wrong, but I wonder if perhaps this song is aimed at someone who he's broken up with, or liked as was let down by, who has then come back into his life.

He may be refering to himself as the broken boy, broken as a kid by her leaving him, and not finding anything fun despite having "all his toys"

"Because it's not enough" may mean that she isn't good enough for him now that he's made it
"We are giving up" He's given up on any chance of a relationship and is "moving on"

"Save your sympathy who d'you think you're fooling" He's basically saying don't take me for a fool
"Everything is dead" Everything in the relationship is dead
"Now you welcome me to a town called hypocrisy" She's messed up his head by coming back into his life perhaps?

The lonely girl verse could be his advice to her, as a friend, telling her to pick herself up and be individual, don't follow the flock.

That's what I think of when I hear this anyway, although I'm probably reading too deep into it.

Elbow – Leaders Of The Free World Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the song might be adressing how the UK seems to be in the USA's pocket;

The first verse is how he's sick with his everyday life

The periscope up bit, I think, might be a reference to the PM, being under control of the American president (The commander in chief)

Your mum might mean the country, the friends you keep are the dodgy dealings with other governments, "I didn't raise a thief" might be suggesting that the goverment is criminalised.

"I'm so easy to please" might be that he just wants politicians to be truthful, "like the 60s didn't happen" could refer to key political events such as Kennedy getting shot.

"Passing the gun" I agree is about Bush Sr and Jr, "only the good die young" is another refernce to Kennedy perhaps.

It may not be entirely accurate but the point is that it's an awesome song from an awesome band; long live Elbow!!

Kaiser Chiefs – Born To Be A Dancer Lyrics 14 years ago
I think that he feels constrained by having one lover, in that he's supposed to be there for her, but he knows that she's cheating on him (you were hanging with a crowd...) and shows her that he doesn't need her.

"just lay back and think of England" was said to victorian women as they were not supposed to enjoy sex, it was for the man's enjoyment only, the woman's job was to bare the child. Of course that's absolute bollocks today, but it could mean that he doesn't enjoy sex with her, but it's his duty to her, perhaps he feels guilty about cheating on her.

But then he lets it out "I was born to be a dancer" it's like he was born to be free, what he wanted to be, and there is a paralel with sexual desire there as well. A "dancer" might be someone who has a lot of sexual partners, but he justifies it as he was born like that.

That is my interpretation anyway

Muse – Citizen Erased Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm sure there's a reference to "1984" in there...
for one moment
i wish you'd hold your stage
with no feelings at all
open minded
i'm sure i used to be so free

In the book there is an idea that members of the inner party (like O' Brien) have to have feelings otherwise they would never be able to rule over as they do. Winston does say a lot that he's sure that people had freedom before the party.

The first verse: "Teach us to cheat, lie, cover up what shouldn't be shared" is what Winston does in the ministry of truth: Changes articles to make it look like the party is always right and doesn't let the rogues get voice.

"To see and to be what you want and what you need" The party need everyone to be under their control to stay in power, and Winston has to stay like that to avoid them capturing him.

When the song modulates into a happier key, this personifies the last few sentences of 1984 for me:- "But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother."
So in a way that's the most disturbing part of the song, as he is finally broken, it's a false happiness.

I may be miles off the true meaning of the song, but the references are there, the title "Citizen Erased" itself is a reference, as in 1984, Winston talks about people just being erased from all records and disappearing.

Muse have a lot of links with 1984, especially with their latest album. I bought the album first and then read 1984. I picked up so much more from that album and a lot of Muse's songs having read it.

Incredible song, stunning solo - like a lot of Muse songs, simply mindblowing!
