I'm about to let you in on a little secret here, guys. . . . . Pavement songs don't mean anything! Sure there'll be some info every couple of lines, (I'm on the stereo says he knows that he's not getting attention) but for the most part, words are there for how they sound. Using the voice as an instrument is a very interesting prospect. Animal Collective's sole mentioned influence (I believe) is Pavement for a reason. |

DUHURR SUICIDE! MUST BE EMOLOLOLOL. it's not. it's not even suicide. The song is about a regrets. The guy's dug himself so far into a hole that he can't get himself out. or a noose. This is not a man who wants to kill himself (he remorses being in too tight). this is a guy thats waiting out death because his life is so shitty. He's tied in too tight, but wants to get out. and it's all his fault. (this is a recurring theme for Isaac Brock; see Wild Packs of Family Dogs) |

The song is about human failure. Doin' the cockroach means surviving for the sake of surviving. we're mechanisms of nature: survival machines. When he says One year Twenty years Forty years Fifty years Down the road in your life You'll look in the mirror and say "My parents are still alive!" he's talking about the same thing. swamisurfer had a good point about american history. America is supposedly the land of opportunity, where you Aren't Who Your Father Was. that's what looking in the mirror deliberately contradicts. it's sad, because we're condemned to be who are parents were. |

In my mind, the greatest and most poetic part of this song, or any song, is "going out to find blind spots". What's so brilliant about it is that it comes before Isaac describes god as an eye in the sky. Mr.Brock's boss is going out to find blind spots from the eye in the sky. He wants to find spots where god doesn't have jurisdiction on him. He wants to escape. To The Moon & Antarctica. The way that line is positioned made sure that I did not find its meaning for quite a few listens; letting it slowly unfurl until it finally got me. Like an epiphany. |

Stevo, I'm pretty sure Adam & Eve could refer to mankind; as we are losing god. There seems to be quite a bit more atheists nowadays. and I think that "the universe is shaped exactly like the earth" part refers to the hedonic treadmill theory: that no matter your social class, most people experience the same amount of joy due to set standards in their lifestyles. There's always going to be something more exciting, and something more disheartening, but the average day is regarded as having the same amount of enjoyment whether you are dirt poor or filthy rich. So no matter where you go or how far, on any scale of size, you will end up in the same place. That, or we all end up not alive, just as we started, and it's how we get there that counts. |

No beef with you, I just rank the Pixies second to The Beetles in how influential they where. Afterall, they did start grunge and alternative; in much the same way as The Beetles started rock.
