The Junior Varsity – Get Comfortable Lyrics 13 years ago
I think I can relate to this, now that I'm at college and have changed residences. I see now what people mean when they say that everything changes when you go to college. Before I left, my hometown was such a place of solace and home that I could never imagine being anywhere else. Now everytime I visit, it just seems fake and plastic. It's not the town I remember. It's a strange feeling, but a very real one. I think this song could be about a similar experience, of going back home to a sense of dissapointment.

The Junior Varsity – Do You Mind? Lyrics 13 years ago
How are there no comments?? This song is awesome!

I can't really put a finger on what it may be about, perhaps a fight? The way he keeps saying "I'm only accidental" makes me think he's saying or doing things that he isn't thinking clearly about, and the "Insert a fist into the wall" is pretty self explainitory. Either he got mad and punched a hole in his wall or somebody else did. I could be off but I think it's about a fight.

Paramore – The Only Exception Lyrics 14 years ago
She's referring to a memory of promising herself she'd never sing about love, it's not her saying it at that moment. She meets this guy and remembers promising herself she wouldn't sing about it, but the guy is so incredible that she can't help but sing about it, and bypass the doubt. Hence, he's "The only exception".

Yellowcard – City Of Devils Lyrics 14 years ago
I hate the fact that this album got dogged on by so many critics and that the general opinion was that it was a dissapointment, because it seems as if they didnt even take the time to listen to the songs. Yeah, not the typical Yellowcard we all are familiar with, but just because it's different dosent mean it's bad. To me, this whole album was very symbolic and had deep meaning. This song is the perfect example of that.

The title alone is incredibly clever, and the entire song is almost as if Ryan snaps back at someone defending Los Angeles. It's no secret that he dosent like it, and vents his frustrations of living in the fake society that Los Angeles is. He has trouble making friends there because everyone is so caught up in themselves "Boy you gotta love someone more than yourself...it's hard to find angels...". A very simple message, he could easily just say "I hate Los Angeles" and leave it at that. But instead, you get an incredibly well-thought out and well-written song telling you why.

And that is the hidden greatness behind Lights and Sounds as a whole album. If only those "experts" and "critics" took the time to pay attention.

Death Cab for Cutie – Little Bribes Lyrics 14 years ago
I really got a kick out of this when I first heard it. It fits my feelings towards Las Vegas perfectly. If there's any place that I hate more than anything, it's Vegas. It's the fakest and most empty-hearted city on the planet. I think this song is just a testament to that.

Yellowcard – You and Me and One Spotlight Lyrics 14 years ago
Anybody else think it's inspired/a reference to the movie "Armegaddon"?

When I hear the chorus, I think of Harry's last goodbye to his daughter. I don't know why, but that image of the two talking to each other on that teleconference keeps popping into my head every time I hear it.

And the title makes me think of Harry and AJ, when Harry decides to accompany AJ to the shuttle's exit when AJ is chosen as the one who is left behind, the "spotlight" referring to the responsibility of detonating the bomb. Harry of course, ultimately stays behind to detonate the bomb instead.

I know I dont have much behind my theory lol, its just hard to explain. Watch the movie then listen to the song and you may see what I mean. It just seems to fit to me.

Yellowcard – Shadows and Regrets Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm quite confused as to the meaning when i listen to it. I think it's this:

In the beginning, Ryan has a moment alone in his hometown (Jacksonville, I believe), and is thinking about his friend who died, the one who "View From Heaven" is about. He sort of "talks" to him updating him about what's new in Jacksonville "I'm back, back in town, and everything ahs changed. I feel, feel let down. The faces stay the same.", then begins to remember the times he shared with him (the chorus). All in all, he is getting at the idea that his friend may have been either dissapointed or ashamed of what Jacksonville has become, had he been around to see it.

The rest of the song are compilations of memories of his friend, and regrets he has of things he may have said/done that he never fized or took back before his friend passed away. The ensuing choruses are childhood memories and talks they had about thier future.

Basically, it's about remembering those who made impacts on your life who have passed away and yearning for a life shared with them again.

Yellowcard – Keeper Lyrics 14 years ago
I too believe it's about Ryan's frustration in his endevour to find the right person for him. He isn't singing to any specific person, more so that "special someone" who's still out there. Now, i'm not saying that these songs musically are at all alike in any way, but I think the message in "Keeper" is close to the same as "Haven't Met You Yet" by Michael Buble. Ryan's just singing to that someone who's out there waiting for him.

Death Cab for Cutie – Passenger Seat Lyrics 14 years ago
The imagery is incredible in this song, I remember the first time I heard it, I was on a road trip on by baseball team's bus heading to a game some two hours away. The route there was through a canyon, and at night you could see faint outlines of evergreen trees and mountain ridges. The line "the darkest country road and the strong scent of evergreen" couldn't have been timed better as I got to the song while passing thorugh the canyon, and I felt like I was right where Ben was singing about. That's the sheer greatness of DCFC.

As for my interpretation, I never did think of it as a bond between someone and a parent figure, that is definetely an interesting interpretation. But I had always thought of it as perhaps a road trip some friends are taking, it is late at night and he and the driver are the only ones awake. I would think that the driver is his girlfriend, and they are sharing a small moment with each other while they still have it. The guy in the passenger seat is tired and falling asleep, and perhaps mutturs "do they collide?", referring to the stars and satellites. His girlfriend thinks this is silly and is amused by how funny he is while he is tired. The guy, though still falling asleep, realizes this and feels a feeling similar to being on top of the world, resting his feet on the dash and telling himself "the world dosent matter", because he has everything he needs right next to him. As he finally falls asleep, he is thinking of his girlfriend and everything she means to him, and everything he'll do for her - "When you feel embarrased, then i'll be your pride. When you need directions, then i'll be the guide; for all time".

Third Eye Blind – Monotov's Private Opera Lyrics 14 years ago
This is my favorite song on Ursa Major, no doubt. I've had trouble trying to figure out what it means, but three parts of the song have had me thinking ever since I first listened to it.

"Some moments are more real than the books i've read"

I think what he may be trying to say is that he wasn't prepared for something that happened, and that he's at a loss for a solution. What he thought he knew dosent help him, and that reality has blindsided him.

The second part that got to me is when he repeats "I'm talking to myself" near the end of the song. Think about those lines as if you are really saying this out loud: "And I mean it, even when i'm talking to myself......I'm talking to myself." I thought about this and to me, maybe he is saying that after all that he has been saying in the song, that no one is listening to him. That after all, he really IS talking to himself. Perhaps he went through lots of work to fix somthing, in vain? I know it sounds like a stretch, but I can't help but think that this is the case.

The last part that got to me is the last lines, "Everything changed in a day, and I know another one's on the way." I read the pregnancy thought, that this may be reffering to a new child. That is a very valid point, and could very well be it's meaning. But when I first heard it, especially after thinking about why he repeated "I'm talking to myself", I began to think that this may be his way of saying "Oh, well, tommorrow's a new day", as if to say that "another one's on the way" refers to tommorrow. Something has changed his life on this day that he didn't expect (some moments are more real than the books i've read), and he's gearing himself up for this new beginning, seeing tommorrow as an opportunity to expound on it.

The Ataris – Begin Again From the Beginning Lyrics 14 years ago
This is my favorite Ataris song ever. I remember hearing it for the first time and just sitting there thinking, "Wow." It's a much different sound than anything in So Long, Astoria, which I consider to be thier best album. But nonetheless, this is what I consider to be their best song. It really makes you appreciate life for what it is, especially the chorus. How Kris saw something as simple as a bird but to him it was "an angel". It's appreciating the life you live that's most important, and every time I listen to it, I can't help but be glad that I'm alive. Awesome.

Taking Back Sunday – My Blue Heaven Lyrics 14 years ago
I know Adam stated that it is about his faith in God, and it certainly makes sence. But I'd like to share what I thought upon hearing it for the first time.

"Two sides twist and then collide, you're calling off the guards. I'm coming though (Am I coming through?)"

This is an "opposites attract" sort of thing, at first a guy and a girl maybe either don't get along or are complete opposites (two sides twist), then they both find that they do indeed have things in common, and the guy begins to fall in love with her (and then collide). It may seem to him that at first she is beginning to have the same feelings for him (your'e calling off the guards), but then asks himself if he's certain that that's the case (Am I coming through?)

"Adulturess conditioned to a spin cycled submission, you know sometimes it just feels better to give in"

This part was a little confusing and i'm not entirely certain of the first part in particular. But the best I could think of is that this girl keeps spinning in his head and he can't get her out (conditioned to a spin cycled submission), but decides against trying to get her out and keeps thinking of her (sometimes it just feels better to give in).

"And it's all too familiar, and it happens all the time. All the cards begin to stack up, twisting heartache into fine little pieces that avoid an awful crime, but it's you I can't deny."

He's thinking of all the times he's fallen in love with someone, only to be rejected or watched things fall apart. He's been here before (And it's all too familiar, and it happens all the time). All these times, the same things happen - he feels that each time is the time that it will finally work out, but that he is fooled in the end (all the cards begin to stack up, twisting heartache into fine little pieces) despite being afraid that this could be another failure, he assures himself that this time is different and that she is the one (but it's you I can't deny).

"Dull heat rises from the sheets, I'm both a patient boy and a jealous man"

He is getting frustrated, this is probably going nowhere at the moment and this is frustrating him (dull heat rises from the sheets). He tells himself to be patient, that maybe if he waits it out, that something will come of it, but he wonders why this can't get up off the ground - perhaps there is another guy involved that she prefers over him (I'm both a patient boy and a jealous man).

"My double standardized suspicison is remedied, oh my blue heaven".

This part is another confusing one that leaves me lost, it's mostly the "double standardized suspicsion" part. But I think "My Blue Heaven" may refer to feeling the blues, or being down. He is in a state of loneliness because this girl isn't giving him a chance after all, and he sarcastically calls this state his "Blue Heaven".

He repeats the chourus as if to go back to his original thoughts, that this time may be just like all the others, but still concludes that this girl is the one (still it's you I can't deny).

"We swing and we sway as this tiny voice in my head starts to sing 'your'e safe child, you are safe'"

I think this may actually be an answer to a prayer, hence the connection to Adam's faith in God. He probably gets to the point where he feels God is the only one who can help him figure this out, and after praying, he and his thoughts try to gather (we swing and we sway), then he feels a sence of peace as if God is trying to tell him that everything will be alright (Your'e safe child, you are safe), even though he is still unsure of what the outcome may be. I know it may be a stretch but that's immediately what I thought when I first heard that line.

"I'm just asking you to hear me, could you please just once, just hear me?"

He's at the point where he's done everything he can to get this girls attention, and is trying one last time to get it. He's probably laying everything on the line (could you please, just once, just hear me?)

"More than anything you wanted to be right, still it's you I can't deny"

He is talking to himself at first, realizing this may be all he's got left to give. He thinks he may have tried so hard for her attention because he wanted to prove to himself that this time, she really was the right one (More than anything you wanted to be right). He stops talking to himself and thinks instead for a moment, only to come to the conclusion, yet again, that he can't deny that he loves her. (Still it's you I can't deny)

An extremely poetic way of saying "No matter what, you'll always be the one I love".

This is my absolute favorite TBS song, just ahead of "Where My Mouth Is". It's definetely one of the best written songs of it's kind, and I consider it to be TBS's greatest work. Of course, it may help that i've been in this excact situation before, but who hasn't? It definetely connects to the truest moments of life and is spewing with realism. Awesome.

Death Cab for Cutie – A Lack of Color Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is right up there with "Passenger Seat" and "The New Year" as my favorites in Transatlanticism.

I feel a more personal connection with this song, however, because it reminds me so much of a personal experience.

I first heard this song two years ago, during the end of my school year. Now, where I live, just because it's May dosent mean it's not going to rain. It probably rains more during the month of May than any other month where I live, strangely. Anyways, at this time, things with a girl and I went way downhill, and eventually, failed. I was obviously not doing too well, and the constant rain didn't help (It must have rained every day of May that year). When I came across "A Lack of Color", the title immediately made me think of the all too familiar sight of dark grey clouds and pounding rain distorting the view outside, draining any color left to the point where everything seemed black, grey, and white.

At that point in time, this girl and I weren't getting along as well as we used to, so naturally she seemed like someone else to me. I perhaps saw her "upside down". But I kept trying to tell myself that she was still the way I knew her, so my brain "picked her up and turned her around".

Of course, I already said that "A Lack of Color" to me was the constant rain storms outside. "If you feel discouraged when there's a lack of color here, please don't worry lover it's really bursting at the seams" meant to me that if she ever needed anything that I would still be here for her no matter what, and that that wouldn't change, and the rainy days, or "Lack of Color" were just a symbol of how we were feeling.

I was slowly coming the realization as May was drawing towards a close that this was real - that she and I were really drifting apart and that chances were getting slimmer by the day: "This is fact, not fiction"

Despite the best of efforts, nothing I did worked. I realized that in the end, we just weren't meant to be, and there was little to no reason to keep wasting time on it, and that she had little to no reason to listen to me in the first place. "I slur a plea for you to come home. But I know it's too late, I should've given you a reason to stay."

May ended, and it was fully over. Done. I realized for the last time that this was the truth, and I began the phase of starting over, all over again. "This is fact, not fiction."

Death Cab for Cutie – 405 Lyrics 14 years ago
I first heard the acoustic version while reading a book about the Brooklyn Dodger teams of the late 40's and 50's, so though it does not relate whatsoever to the real meaning of the song, all I can think of every time I hear it is Jackie Robinson, Pee Wee Reese, Roy Campanella and Duke Snider. It's just one of those things where youre mind is conditioned to do something upon hearing or seeing something else. Strange, I know.

But however, I do agree with the interpretations aforementioned, especially the one by redcedarfever about how the 405 symbolizes thier relationship.

It's an incredible song, and to those who may not have heard it, I prefer the acoustic version ten times more than the original.

Death Cab for Cutie – A Diamond and a Tether Lyrics 14 years ago
The first time I heard this last fall, I told myself two things:

1. It is THE saddest song I have ever heard

2. It is one of the top 5 greatest DCFC songs. EVER.

I admit that I put this song on repeat over and over again upon hearing it for the first time. Of course, I have been having love problems for sometime and I was in the mood for it, but nonetheless, I still consider it one of Gibbard's masterpieces. The interpretation I had is basically the same as all of yours, so there's no sense in me saying the same thing haha :P but I will say that this song is one of those that is truly captivating and will always be a favorite of mine.

Death Cab for Cutie – Stable Song Lyrics 14 years ago
This is one of those songs in which the interpretation of it's meaning can vary tremendously. I know that it was stated somewhere what Ben Gibbard said the song meant, and upon hearing it it makes perfect sence. But right now i'd like to share what I thought the first time I heard it last year:

I had believed that "Stable Song" was about a transition from high school life to college life.

"Time for the final bow (or bout), rows of deserted houses. All our stable mates highway bound."

This is the final goodbye, this person is leaving home and embarking on this new chapter. His friends no longer occupy the houses they used to live in, as they are heading out for college as well, so to him, these houses are "deserted". His friends and he are leaving thier seperate ways, closing the book on thier high school careers. "All our stable mates highway bound".

"Give us our measly sum. Getting the air inside my lungs is heavenly, starting out with nothing but crippling doubt."

This person is now at college, probably working a job that is less than helpful to his financial needs - he may make minimum wage. "Give us our measly sum". He realizes that he is entirely on his own for the first time and any sliver of release from his stress is a breath of fresh air, "Getting the air inside my lungs is heavenly". To begin with, he was stressed along and may have doubted whether he was ready for this transition or not. "Starting out with nothing but crippling doubt".

"We'll rest easy, justified".

He is telling himself that he can relax and "rest easy" when it is proven that he can, indeed, make it on his own.

"Suffered a swift defeat, I'll endure countless repeats. The gift of memory's an awful curse. With age it just gets much worse, but I wont mind".

During what little down time he may have, he remembers his high school life, perhaps specifically a break-up he isn't over quite yet. He knows that this is how life goes, and prepares himself for the bumpy road ahead by saying he'll "endure countless repeats". He acknowledges that the more memories he remembers, the sadder he begins to feel, and perhaps the more homesick he feels as well; "With age it just gets much worse". But he then realizes that these feelings make him human, and that these memories are indeed his greatest possessions, so he "won't mind" that some may bother him.

I know this isnt the real meaning of the song, this is just merely what came to me the first time I heard it. What do you guys think?

Coldplay – Poppyfields Lyrics 14 years ago
This song and "Glass of Water" are my favorites from the EP, and should ahve been included in "Viva La Vida".

My interpretation of this song is that it is certainly a war/battle - but not in the way that you think. I don't believe that Chris is a writer that is necessarily obvious when it comes to songs such as these. Of course, this song has all the makings of a story about a real war, and Chris very well may have used one as a model. But I believe this is about a personal war within one's self, trying to figure out how to get out of it.

"I ask somebody what the time is, but time dosent matter to them yet."

This person is asking merely for help, for advice, but whoever they are asking can't help them, or dosent know how to answer thier question. They may see it as an akward situation and try to shy away from it, leaving the person in need lost again.

"People talking without speaking, trying to take what they can get."

This person and others like him are perhaps thinking to themselves, gathering thier surroundings or memories of thier own past, and trying to find solutions or answers. They are essentially talking to themselves in their mind, without saying it out loud. Talking without speaking.

"Drums! Here it comes."

The thing/thought/person that started the problem is approaching this troubled person - like the sound of drums signaling a battle - the internal battle is beginning for this person.

"Don't you wish that life could be as simple as fish swimming around in a barrell when you've got the gun?"

This person is wondering why this problem has to be so hard, and realizes that the outcome is in his own hands (when you've got the gun)

"Oh and I run, here it comes."

the thing/thought/person that started the problem is still coming, and this person decides to try and outrun it - think of other things, distract himself - run away.

"We're just two little figures in a soup bowl trying to get behind some kind of control, but I wasn't one."

The thing/thought/person has been chasing this person to his/her limit around what he/she may consider a limited space - he/she can only run so far (two little figures in a soup bowl), but the thing/thought/person has the upper hand, the advantage, and the troubled person fears it (but I wasn't one.)

"And here I lie on my own in a seperate sky. I don't want to die on my own here tonight, but here I lie on my own in a seperate sky."

This person cannot stand to be alone in this ordeal and is searching for anything or anyone that he/she can rely on to help him/her get out. This person feels apart from the rest of the world because he/she is perhaps not being listened to or considered (on my own in a seperate sky). This person feels he/she is on the verge of exploding or breaking down, and is afraid that if it is to happen, that there will be no one or nothing to help he/she recover (I don't want to die on my own here tonight). He/she then realizes that at this moment at least, he/she is are still alone and just thinking about it hasn't helped him/her make progress. A final realization of what he/she already knew - "But, here I lie on my own in a seperate sky."

The ending leaves the question open ended - does this person get the help they need? Do they get everything figured out? And perhaps leads the listener to wonder if they, themselves, are going through something similar. That is what I thought upon listening to it for the first time, and I consider it to be not only one of coldplay's best songs, but one of thier more thought provoking ones as well. I think it is proven by the many takes on what it means, which cements it's brilliance.

Death Cab for Cutie – A Movie Script Ending Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is definetely about a trip back to Bellingham, as proven by the street names. I kind of figured so, however, by the first line in the chorus, "Passing through unconsious states". Depending on which route you take, you'll more than likely to pass through states like Montana, Wyoming, or Idaho, which are some of the lesser populated states and could therefore be regarded as "Unconsious states", for the fact that nothing really goes on there.

This song also reminds me of a similar trip I took back to an old hometown a few years ago. Though I stayed in-state, I passed through some of the lesser populated counties to get to my old hometown (passing through unconsious states). Everything looked the same as it was when I left, kind of like what Ben is saying when he says "The air on Railroad is making the same sound". There were small changes, like a new supermarket and a new baseball field, but the people and it's surroundings didn't change a bit. "New bottoms on barstools, the people remain the same."

In my experience, I'm making a point never to go back because of some issues with family down there. "A Movie Script Ending" is the perfect title for this, in my opinion, and may very well relate to Ben in his trip back. I felt it was good to have gone back when I did to realize that my old hometown hasn't changed for the most part, and will stay, more than likely, preserved as it did when I grew up there. A sort of assurance, if you will, that how it is pictured in my mind will forever be how it is in real life - a perfect ending, a "Movie Scipt Ending".
