What you said is so wrong it's vulgar. No one knows what anyone is thinking before they kill themselves and it's preposterous for you to think you do.

Kurt didn't write this. The Meat Puppets did! And the song does not have a meaning and if it does, none of us will find it... Unless someone knows the Meat Puppets and asks them and the answer isn't: "the song doesn't have any specific meaning" which it probably will.

You're entire reply is erroneous as you failed to understand the basic premise of my argument. I'm not going to bother with explaining it to you because I feel that if by now it's not entirely clear to you, then there is no hope in paraphrasing it to help you understand it.

"The author has a meaning behind their art, but also wants it to mean different things to different people."

This may or may not be true. Artist express themselves and people are witnesses of their art. You cannot assume the artist even considers the audience in his work. Perhaps in some musical acts this would apply but I'm afraid the wording you chose to express your thought makes it incorrect in most situations. Why would TDWP quote someone else's words to convey a different message? Why not write an entirely new sentence? Logic or proper spelling and syntax are not your strong points. You're plenty fucking stupid though I'll give you that!

Have the decency of being factual in your replies. Quoting the bible does not constitute fact or a valid argument in a logical discussion. I'll retract my previous statement though and admit it was presumptuous. deathofhonor may be a great christian but he is a bad person who does not care for logic or facts. All three of you are bigots. A bigot is a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices, especially one exhibiting intolerance, irrationality, and animosity toward those of differing beliefs.

swirle13: "not judging others, you bible-incompetent fool" animosity and intolerance based of belief and personal interpretation, not facts.

ifonlyyouandi57: "Again you prove your retarded" You couldn't spell "you're" properly but went ahead and called me retarded which is an irrational and violent judgment based on personal beliefs.

Both of you are going to have to face the fact that there is no arguing logic with religion because logic is a superior path of reasoning. This is an observable fact of life as it yields better results in any situation. God wasn't there to help you win here, just your obtuse, misguided, uneducated sense of right and wrong.

Kurt was against authority and that's a form of intolerance in itself. He was intolerant of authority. So logically Kurt was an intolerant person. So it's clear you speak without knowledge of fact punkmeansfreedom? Even your username is wrong. Punk does not equal freedom. Punk is "fuck it all" and you would get that if you weren't such a bigoted poser. Kurt was often punished by his father and bullied at school for no reason so he was against people taking authority over others without justification. The church does that and you're doing the same. Kurt would have been against you taking an authoritative stance for your religion so shame on you! Lyrics are art and religion is not. Religion and religious comments have no place on this website in any shape or form because they are irrelevant. This is logical. I'm not expressing a belief.

Art does not answer to religion. Art is the only truth on this earth.

There's always idiots who think there's a deep religious meaning in artists songs. Kurt sang that song that night because the Vaseline's version was good and would sound even better acoustically. Kurt clearly says in "About a Son" (that's a movie you haven't watched and should have before posting here) that he has no answer as to what his lyrics mean. He says that they are pieces of poetry put together because they sound good. So Don't go looking for religion in his lyrics or the Vaseline's. Don't go looking for religion in any true artist's lyrics because it won't be there. That's the lowest any person can go, to pawn off religion as art. Religion is opposite of art. It's contrived, pretentious idiocy. Just like your comments!

@surfwaxafghani He says "This was written by the Vaselines. Well... It's a rendition of an old christian song I think. But we do it the Vaselines way" right before singing it! Why post anything if you haven't listened to the song properly?

I'm surprised there are so many replies. It hasn't occurred to any of you that we have no knowledge of what Meat Puppets meant writing it? The lyrics are pretty straight forward in that they don't make logical sense. So it's surprising to see a lot of you posting answers as if you have the be all end all meaning of it. Songs like this are relevant because they can be deeply intimate for anyone but almost never for the same reasons. Generosity in art is the most important thing, it's easy for an artist to make a song so complex and intricate that only themselves can understand it. It's a lot harder to take that same sentiment and place it within a context where it will be understood and felt by all. And that's what great art is, that's what this song is and that's what people should take from it.

Sorry but it has nothing to do with Adam and Eve... the lyrics make no reference or allusion to the story of Adam and Eve at all. Why would the Author quote a passage of a book about vanity which was written by Oscar Wilde who was extremely vain to relate Adam and Eve? You don't think the song is about vanity? Of course not because it's much easier to say it's about Adam and Eve. That's lazy and mediocre! Sloth is a sin too by the way. Do some research next time!

Don't look too far when trying to find meaning in The Devil Wears Prada songs. The simple reason being that as a band, they are required by contract to appeal to the broadest audience possible. This means that their lyrics are kept vague and have no clear "universal" meaning. The following is an obvious and literal analysis of the song as it is based on verified facts. It is the only type of acceptable song analysis as it is objective and does not assume intimate knowledge of the author's sentiment and intentions.

"I am the speaker but what is responsibility?" means: I say words but I ponder their effect on reality.

"This I beg of you, build me brick upon brick" means: I am nothing and need someone else to tell me who to be. Please note this is not Christian at all. If you read the bible you should not have any questions about how or who to be. The lessons in the bible are straight forward.

"High tides; waves of hypocrisy" means: It's out of context and has no obvious meaning. A dumb lyric.

"I didn't think the clock struck more than twelve times" means that it's late and the author is surprised. "Oh my! Did you look at the time?"

"I decided to name her insomnia" means: He is up late and is making a big deal of it.

"Her teeth (show) like white seeds in a scarlet fruit" means: The author read "The picture of Dorian Gray" and remembered to take the quote as a lyric. The "Scarlet fruit" is the color of the skin that is inside everyone's mouth. When you smile your gums are red (scarlet means red) and your teeth stick out of them like seeds (because teeth are white). This has no observable relation to Adam and Eve and anyone who claims it does should not drink water with fluoride in it!

"This I must tell you, old friend: fear beauty" means: This is a reference to "The picture of Dorian Gray" because in the book the protagonist chases beauty and is ultimately betrayed by it. It also means the author is idiotic. Dumb lyrics, not subtle at all.

"This is meager, this is feeble" means: Again a reference to "beauty" as it is written about by Oscar Wilde because it is fleeting and ephemeral. And that means that those who seek beauty always lose it. It is not a good thing to want to be beautiful. A person is beautiful in their hard work and values, not in their looks.

"She was only a fiction and my creation" means: The author is talking about beauty. He is saying beauty isn't real. We only perceive it as such.

In conclusion, I think it would be fair to say that the Theme of the song is "beauty" and "values" and makes allusions to and quotes the book "The picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde. TO ALL OBTUSE CHRISTIANS OUT THERE, PLEASE WORK HARDER IN YOUR ANALYSES BECAUSE YOU'RE LEADING PEOPLE TO THINK THAT ALL TWDP SONGS HAVE A DIRECT RELATION TO CHRISTIANITY WHEN IT IS NOT THE CASE AT ALL. THEY VAGUELY REFERENCE PASSAGES IN THE BIBLE AT BEST.

@deathofhonor You are not a good Christian and I'll tell you why. God calls upon all of us to be shepherds, to lead those who do not know or do not see in the RIGHT direction. So, you are a bad Christian because in your reply to "brando911" you made no mention of who the quote was originally from and gave an explanation based on an opinion. There was nothing true about what you said because it's what you think someone meant who themselves where quoting someone else and taking the quote out of it's context and giving it a completely new meaning. To make a long story short, the quote has no meaning and could not have any meaning other than the image it proposes. Being a good Christian means you have to work hard and be factual. You have done neither.

That quote is from a book by Oscar Wilde (Who was not Christian at all) called "The Picture of Dorian Gray" and you should read it. So don't listen to the people who assume every TDWP song is about or directly referencing anything from the bible because TDWP as a band has to appeal to as broad an audience as possible and this means that all their lyrics are vague and subject to the listeners interpretation. In brief, TWDP songs have no specific meaning.
