Regina Spektor – Summer in the City Lyrics 14 years ago
When I first heard the song, I thought the line 'I’ve been hallucinating you, babe, at the backs of other women' was "I've been hallucinating you, babe, with a batch of other women."
Making it, for me, from the perspective of a female who's been betrayed by her partner.
And when she would tap these women on the shoulder, they would smile without recognition of what they've done
and the temptation that they've caused.
The lines 'Summer in the city means cleavage cleavage cleavage" are only a constant bitter reminder to her of the
temptation that took her partner away from her.
And the bit about the castrated men is her relating to their helplessness, their bitterness
that they can no longer feel a physical connection with someone.
The protest is her desperation to get over him, feel some form of connection to somebody,
but she's far too broken for the attempt to be successful.

The line that especially rung out to me was 'Don't get me wrong, dear, in general I think I've been doing quite fine".
She's been trying to be strong without him, but despite his betrayal and the pain he's caused, she still misses him.

After finding the lyrics, and seeing that it is in fact 'at the backs of other women' however,
I think I agree that this song was written from a male perspective about a long lost love.
Funny how one misinterpreted line can give a song a whole new meaning xD
