Cake – The Distance Lyrics 14 years ago
I was reading through the comments to see if somebody already posted what I feel the song means but I gave up because it appears this comment section is plagued by a bunch of sex addicts. Also, If you don't like thinking about deeper meaning of writing, then why are you even at this website??

If you still care to read my opinion after that comment, I thank you. I am just a little irritated.

I feel it is about relationships.
"He" lost the girl he was trying to win but still hasn't given up. He sees she isn't happy with the winner and is hoping he can win her back. He's still trying even though the race is over. He wishes he had won the first time and doesn't want to be there ("reluctantly crouched"). He has given all he can but he doesn't want to give up ("empty tank")
"She" is unhappy with the guy that won her and is conflicted with the thought that it could have been better with the first guy. She feels guilty that he is still trying. Maybe she offended him when she chose the second guy. She doesn't want to go back because those memories of what she did haunt her. If she could just forget she would be happy with him.

I agree, I do wonder how many people commenting here have seen much of life and relationships than what they get from their computer.

I would even say that the girl was won by another, adding to his frustration.

I mostly agree, except I feel "she" was won by somebody else who doesn't really care for her, so he's still trying, hoping he can win her back even though she is taken.

Cake – Long Line Of Cars Lyrics 14 years ago
The song is about a relationship that is at a standstill or unstable, as was mentioned in earlier comments. The cars are disagreements in the relationship. It could be a friendship or it could be more. I like to think it is a marriage that is going bad.

The singer feels the other person is being unforgiving. "There's no single explanation" but many disagreements that are building up and stopping the relationship's progression. The singer wants the other to forgive or "keep this traffic flowing and accept a little sin." As with any relationship there has to be work to resolve disagreements because they will always happen. That's why the cars "keep coming round the bend."

To add to the meaning, listen to the chords. It is full of what are called "dissonant" chords. Songwriters use dissonant cords because the chords feel out of place or disagreeing. The writer usually resolves it by moving to a consonant chord next. This song is full of dissonant chords that never get resolved, especially in the end of the song. He sings dissonant chords over and over on the word "cars" adding to the image of the cars being symbol of disagreement that never gets resolved in the relationship.

In the end of the song the singer admits that he is at fault too. This usually is the case when somebody accuses the other of hindering a relationship. Relationships are two way things.

I agree, except the singer seems to care because he wants the traffic moving again, to forgive each other and move on rather than staying stuck in this standstill.
