Rage Against the Machine – Wake Up Lyrics 11 years ago
Wake Up was released in 1992. DIA opened in 1995.

I don't know where you heard that crap about DIA, but it is not true.

White Zombie – Thunder Kiss '65 Lyrics 11 years ago
I'm probably wrong, but I think this song is actually a bit more straight forward than some other people have said.

Rob Zombie was born in 1965. "Satisfaction", by the Rolling Stones, was released in 1965. "What's New, Pussycat?" came out in 1965. I think the song is basically just a tribute to what was a pretty cool year.

Those are the obvious ones, but I'll bet there are plenty of 1965 pop-culture references sprinkled throughout the song.

Big Audio Dynamite – Rush Lyrics 12 years ago
I hear a few of the lyrics differently:

"...and not change a single thing, even when I was to blame for the heartache and the pain that I've caused throughout my years."

"And of all my friends, you've been the best to me. Soon will be the day when I repay you handsomely."

I typed them out like that so that you can see how they look as complete sentences.

Supertramp – Goodbye Stranger Lyrics 12 years ago
I think Occam's Razor applies here: the simplest answer is usually the correct one.

In other words, everything you need to know about this song is contained in the title and the lyrics. Don't read into it too much. I think this song is about just what it appears to be.

Cyndi Lauper – She Bop Lyrics 12 years ago
I'm not sure what happened to this thread, but I wish there was a mod on this site to get rid of both of you, and delete your comments.

This is a great song. I recently heard my very conservative and religious sister-in-law singing this to her 18 month old daughter. The daughter was smiling and giggling and enjoying every minute of it.

The best part was explaining to my sis-in-law and my mother-in-law what this song was about.

Mad Caddies – Road Rash Lyrics 12 years ago
I first heard this song on the Fat Music for Fat People Vol.IV compilation mentioned above. I liked it so much, I had to go out and get the Mad Caddies Album to see what else was on it. On the album version, they are talking before they start the song for a few seconds. The only line i can make out is "well, it's recording, Dude!"

Anyone heard this and know what the whole conversation is about? It sounds like it might be kind of funny. They are obviously in the studio, and are swearing at eachother and stuff, but I can't quite make it out.

Garbage – I Think I'm Paranoid Lyrics 12 years ago
I always thought it was "manipulated", not "manipulate it". Contextually, "manipulated" makes far more sense.

NOFX – The Cause Lyrics 12 years ago
What is a barterine? I think it's a scheme, a dream, a BARTERING. (like a trade or negotiation).

I could be wrong, but "barterine" is not even a word. At least not an english word.

Moby – Run On Lyrics 12 years ago
Not that strange at all. From what I've read and what I've heard, Moby is very straight edge. No drugs. No booze. Vegan. Sure, his music is part of the Rave scene, but he is religious and avoids the parts of that culture that would go against his deeply religious views.

I think where many get the wrong impression is that he is also very tolerant of other people's beliefs and choices, which is how he can reconcile his own beliefs with those of many of the people that listen to his music. In other words, his attitude is "if you want to do drugs, drink, eat meat, sleep around, whatever, that's fine by me. It's not my place to judge your choices. But those are the wrong choinces for me, personally."

That is not an actual Moby quote, just my interpretation of many of the things he has said over the years, consolidated into one sentence.

At least, that's what I've understood about him from his interviews and stuff.

NOFX – Fleas Lyrics 12 years ago
I think this song is a tribute to his parents. His father wagiving him advice, "Don't sleep with the dogs or you'll catch their fleas", but he did it anyway, and found that his dad was wrong. "I never had the itch, I never would."

His mother wanted him to succeed, "forbidden me to waste away my life." The line "I want you to have all the things I could never buy you" is a what she said to him. Actually, everything past the point in the song is a quote from his mother.

He took all that advice, and became a successful musician. Maybe not exactly what they had in mind, but they are proud, anyway.

To me, it is along a similar theme as "I Got No" by Op Ivy. "No reason I was going mad, I was hating my Mom and Dad, I was riding a sinking ship; Thank God I never did slip." Not exactly the same, but kinda similar, you know?

Lady GaGa – Born This Way Lyrics 12 years ago
Okay, all you people that think "Capital H-I-M" is referring to Satan, you are wrong. I fact, I'm surprised that you could even make that mistake.

She is referring to him (lower case = random man) as opposed to Him (upper case = God). This distinction is very common in written works. In other words when she says "Capital", she is only referrng to the 'H', not the 'i' or the 'm'

Further, to actually make the lyrics correct, the line should read "There's nothin' wrong with lovin' who are, cause He made you perfect, Babe."

Rather than sitting around and judging gay people like the homophobic morons you are, try picking up an f'ing book sometime.

Better Than Ezra – Juicy Lyrics 13 years ago
I never really understood the lyrics. Now that I see them here, I think this song is about gossip. It is about media that ignores important events, and focues on the "juicy" gossip instead. It is not only a critique on the news media, but also on people that feed on the scandalous side of the news.

The Pretenders – I'll Stand By You Lyrics 13 years ago
Along those lines, I danced with my mom to this song at my wedding. I have a hard time listening to it anymore because of all the emotions it stirs.

One thing: If you take the romantic approach, I don't think it is about a completely helpless, weak, sad man that needs his wife or girlfriend to be his backbone. I think that it gets to the heart that everyone needs that support sometimes, and it is ok to ask for help if you need it. That part of twcfan92's post is very immature and demonstrates that he or she had not, at the time of the original post, been in a serious relationship where you sometimes lean on your partner more than you should, and also are prepared to take more of the load if they need to lean on you.

Q Lazzarus – Goodbye Horses Lyrics 13 years ago
Just to expand a little on my own thought: Maybe the conversation is not with Death so much, as it is with God. She is questioning why God has taken her loved ones, and is now coming for her. He explains that "all things pass into the night", meaning pass away. But God is saying he understands how difficult it is, to accept death. After all, he's seen it all before. He's been there. He's been with us when our hopes and dream are lying on the ground.

As I said above, the singer tries to argue with God to give her more time. He says it is her time and she says "I must say you're wrong" and begs him to listen, but he is not to be swayed.

In the end, when she is singing "Goddbye horses, I'm flying over you", it signifies that she has come to accept her fate, and as it turns out, she has reached that state of enlightment that makes all things clear.

Q Lazzarus – Goodbye Horses Lyrics 13 years ago
I think the singer is having a conversation with Death. Death is telling her that her time has come, and she is arguing it. In the end, she accepts that it is her time and there is nothing she can do about it, so she is flying over the horses", which brings us back to the ideas in Eastern philosophy that others have mentioned.

Ben Folds – In Between Days Lyrics 13 years ago
It's weird that there are 5 or 6 links to songs called In Between Days, but none that reference The Cure. All the covers are linked but not the original. I guess it doesn't matter, since the lyrics don't change, but I thought it was odd.

Jay-Z – Empire State of Mind Lyrics 13 years ago
I would suggest to some of the posters on this thread that they read the whole verse, rather than take a single line out of context and use that line to preach to the rest of us.

It is quite clear, when you understand the lines before it, that the line "Jesus can't save you, life begins when Church ends" is actually a critique on people that don't have any faith. Did anyone happen to notice the lines: "we sip the life casually, then gradually become worse. Don't bite the apple, Eve."? Clearly, he is talking about people getting caught up in the lifestyle that New York, fame and fortune have to offer, and he is advising that people be strong and resist temptation.

If we are going to talk about the religious connotations of a song, let's at least talk about it honestly and draw logical conclusions based on the entire song, rather than just taking a single line out of context and trying to tell us that we are on the path of sin.

The Refreshments – Banditos Lyrics 13 years ago
Definately. "Everybody knows that the world is full of stupid people, so meet me at the mission at midnight, we'll divvy up there. And I'll just go ahead and hang on to all these pesos in the mean time. Look deep into my eyes, you can trust me."

OK, so that is a paraphrase of the song. But yeah, the partner-in-crime is not gonna see a single peso, that's for sure.

Concrete Blonde – Bloodletting (The Vampire Song) Lyrics 13 years ago
Not every song is about drug use. Just because a song says the word "Mirror" in the first verse does not mean that they are talking about doing lines off a mirror. Put the whole thing in context, don't just pick out a single word and base a theory on it.

"Tomorrow, Wendy" is the song about a friend with AIDS. I never knew when the Novel was written, but Bloodletting seems to fit with the theme of Interview With the Vampire. I'll agree with those posters.

I am not going to read through 6 pages of comments, so sorry if I step on anyone's toes.

This sing was going to be part of a rock opera, like Tommy. I'm not sure of the whole story line, but from what I've read, this was going to be the opening song.

Go back to page 1 and read BrainDamage's post. That is the right one.

Revolting Cocks – Mr. Lucky Lyrics 14 years ago
my username is based on this song, as is a tattoo on my left arm (winking smiley face). I think the lyrics are pretty straight forward. It is about that guy we all know. The guy that goes out to the clubs, looking flashy, but actually doesn't have a dime to his name. No girls are safe from his sleeziness. Not the young ones, not the 4am beauty queens, not even the tv's.

Now, given that I have just described the guy as sleezy, you are probably wondering why I have a tattoo of winking smiley face with the words Mr Lucky around it. Well, 2 reasons: First, I like the character in the song. I always saw him as being sort of a harmless guy just trying to have fun. He has to "pimp his intellect" in order to get away with it. In other words, he knows what he is doing is classless, but he is going to put that knowledge on the shelf for a night. Or maybe I'm just glorifying the character.

The other reason is this: you know when you're kid and you get new bike, or beat your friend at video game or something, your friends would say "you are sooo lucky!"? Well, as long as I can remember, and long before I heard this song, I would always respond with "I'm Mr. Lucky!" Eventually, anytime something good happened to me, my friends started saying "you are Mr Lucky!"

The bottom line is that this song puts me in a good mood.

PS--Mr Lucky was also the nickname I gave to my little soldier. Come on guys! Fess up! We all have one!

I'm glad I read through all the posts before I entered my own. You saved me a lot of typing. I agree with you 100%, right down to your interpretation of the "Some they do and some they don't" section. It is the last line of that section "with some its just as well" that really ties it all together.

If you read this site long enough, you learn that apparently every song ever written is about drug addiction and suicide. Thanks for having a unique, thoughtful, and quite not as angsty perspective.

Actually, Sid was a TERRIBLE bassist. It was common for the band to disconnect his amp during live shows just so the crowd wouldn't hear his awful playing. Much of it was due to his usually being wasted, but he was not very good even when sober. All that being said, he was the definition of punk, if not of a musician.

interesting. I always thought the line was "tie-dyed, rancid shirt", which of course it is, but in the lower-case meaning that the shirt smelled bad. Knowing that it actually was a tie-dyed Rancid (the band) shirt makes the whole thing that much funnier. Thanks for the info, mtbaird.

Thanks for the effort, Poprock. I would like to make a couple minor changes: "...see that bird has flown too high..." and "...what it is to be alive, and not just too survive..." New Order – Temptation Lyrics 14 years ago
I really like what Alieno and many others said. This song is purposely ambiguous, and the title is not in any part of it, to give the listener a chance to make up his or her own mind about the meaning, and just focus on the music and the feelings it inspires. This is my all time favorite song, by any artist. If I am having a bad day, I just start singing this song in my head. Though I try to use the correct lyrics and not those posted above (no offense to the poster, thanks for your effort.) But honestly, I think all of you are right in your analysis of the song. It can have many different meanings, depending on the listener's frame of mind and frame of reference. Listening to this song is the best 7 minutes of my day.

New Order – Face Up Lyrics 14 years ago
One of my all time favorites from New Order. It always reminds me of my first gf. She was a few years older than me, and it took us a while to regain the friendship after she broke it off because she "had to make some changes." People warned me about her, that maybe she was too "experienced" or whatever for me, but I didn't care. Anyway, I think you can all see where I am going, and how neatly the song lined up with my situation at the time. And to me, that is what this song is about. Ironically, I put this song on the first mix tape I made for her. Yes, that was a time when people still made mix tapes. All you youngin's will have to ask your parents what those are. :)

New Order – Ceremony Lyrics 14 years ago
I am more of a New Order fan than Joy Division. And Ceremony is one of my all time favorite New Order songs, along with Temptation, Face-up, and The Perfect Kiss. But Ian Curtis' voice when Joy Division played this song is enough to make me cry. There are several versions of the lyrics, and the one's posted above are certainly valid. But Ian Curtis would also sing "What she heard/ these things she said..." a slight change, but does make the meaning of the song seem more to be about betrayal, and the betrayed finding out through "the grapevine", possibly at a family event, as the first poster mentioned.

One thing that can throw many people off when discussing a New Order song is that often the song title has little or nothing to do with what the song is about.

Violent Femmes – American Music Lyrics 14 years ago
I didn't take time to read all the comments, so forgive me if I am repeating someone else's. The song is supposed to be both a celebration and a critisism of American pop music. They emphasize the word "baby" throughout the song to make an ironic point, that song writers use that word to fill in gaps. If you were to take the individual lines out of the song, and create an entire song around those one lines, you'd have 90% of a typical top 40 play list right there. Our pop music tends to be about drug use, teenagers unable to find love, unrequited love due to age difference ("you were born to soon, I was born too late), and every once in while you get a song writer with an angsty poetic streak writing meaningless lyrics about lakes and moons. This song is basically putting all the major themes of most American pop music into one song. That is what I get from it, anyway.
