@[StagFortress:5772] I think you and @[nimbice:5773] are spot on. When I listened to this song before finding the lyrics, I thought she was saying "But my power has gone away," which still seems to fit pretty well, but since everyone else is saying hour, it must be posted somewhere in an official capacity.

I just found these lyrics and ran across this song again tonight. Very dire situation, but a lot of hope is shining through. This is the perfect song and the perfect moment to find it.

Lyrics are good up to 'You, you take, our livelihood at stake'. I like that he called it his 'cake'.

I think I understand what he meant by 'fake', now that I've grown a bit. I couldn't be sure, but he did have a strong character. Discerning, too, which is excellent.

Snot – Unplugged Lyrics 12 years ago
[Ain't no room for us in your alternative nation
It seems you've had control for much too long
Your greed and your dishonesty only add to my frustration
Can't you see the powers that be
Don't give a fuck about you and me
Somebody better say this 'cause there ain't nobody trying to save us
Just enslave us and leave us hanging on a rope that they just gave us
Victim of your mistrust
You, your dance, your stupid cash advance
No, I'm not a vctim of circumstance
Not gonna leave my life to chance
Rape the harts of us, the artists
You reap the benefits.
Your pockets, they get fat
While our souls bleed
You're getting away with murder
"Son, you failed to read the fine print"
Label whores like festering sores
Keep coming back, they got a deal for you
No it's not just good enough to hate this
'Cause we all know the ones in charge
Are all so shameless
And wasted energy on the hate defeats our purpose
Victim of your mistrust
You, you take, our livelihood at stake
And ain't no fake gonna steal my cake
Our spirits much tough to break
Victims of your mistrust

Need to stop and read between those lines
Behind that smile the greed still shows in their eyes
That's part of their disguise
Don't believe the lies
The more I learn about your game
The less I wish to be involved with you another day
Just where do we fit in
It looks like we'll never win
And with the next big trend, the cycle starts again
Don't let them turn you 'round and fall out of trust
You got to take control, don't let them have
They've got to work for us
Don't let them forget, They've got to earn the thrust]

Skips over what s/he couldn't hear. There are still some parts where some people would need to sit down and listen intensely (me included lol). But this pretty much gets the idea out there; haven't listened according to those up there yet.

This guy is absolutely correct. http://www.tirk-recordings.com/tirk017.php I was hoping for something different, got all up in arms over nothing. In defending this song I found on YouTube once, I have made an ass of myself. Go me.

Anyway, this is kind of disappointing and discouraging. Does anyone know any really interesting songs by this band? Can't judge a book by its cover, but my assumptions lead me to believe that the first chapter is usually pretty good indication.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – Spread Your Love Lyrics 12 years ago
Bad enough for what?

You can be tough, and you can be capable of defending yourself. Or you can pretend to be "bad" and put on a false face for everyone. Talk the big talk all you want, but you're putting yourself into a bad situation if you can't back it up.

My boss isn't a "biker dude" or anything (though he does ride out to Texas with his buddy), and he's got a soft heart and a calloused exterior (from working law enforcement). [His buddy is still doing that work, and he has the tattoos and the clothes and everything. Since I don't have an issue with either group, watching biker dudes interact with him is actually pretty cute.] But anyway, the boys know how to defend themselves.

It's a foolhardy thing to pop into a bar with an established customer base and pick a fight with a well-known and -liked person, regardless of what type of bar you're walking into. Based solely on the second and fourth 'stanzas' (don't know the terminology for a song that's made up of two choruses), it sounds to me like the girl in this song got got.

Eminem – The Real Slim Shady Lyrics 12 years ago
"Telegram" by Saul Williams is pretty cool, if you want to consider the genre of hip-hop. I hesitate to say that I hate the culture, necessarily, because that in turn may lead to feelings of hate and judgment toward those who choose to be a part of that culture.

I certainly don't agree with it; playing "the game", whatever that game may be, when involving egocentrism and senseless violence, just isn't my scene. It's not that I don't understand HOW anyone could be involved in the culture; there are plenty of rappers who do talk about being raised to glorify such things.

It's a depressing culture, as is the dog-eat-dog nature of businessmen/politicians/lawyers and their "houses made of ticky-tacky". Not to mention alcoholic rednecks and trailer trash, extremely prevalent in my part of the U.S. All of us know that we're all messed up. The important thing is to rise above, to govern our own morals and attitudes rather than allowing them to be dictated (or eradicated) by some mindless drone society focused on financial success and outward appearances.
Now that I've stepped down from my own soapbox...

Saul Williams was being interviewed for his latest album, and they mentioned toward the beginning a shift in consciousness of the underground and a general change in our way of thinking. His music is really good, one album co-produced by Trent Reznor. (If you recognize the Treznor's name, this man is extremely intelligent and committed to music in some amazing ways) It's really pretty interesting stuff.

Saul Williams – Grippo Lyrics 12 years ago
Is "a gold piece in God's purse" equivalent to religion?

Is violence meant to be a metaphor for victory's plot? Are there those who rap about violence, actually taking stock in it and giving respect to such actions? Would you feel guilt over being one of said people, once understanding and giving respect to violence as a metaphor?

submissions
Saul Williams – Grippo Lyrics 12 years ago
Anyone got something to say about "substitute the anger and oppression with guilt and depression"? I imagine it has something to do with "giving hip-hop to" people.

Would you say there's a sense of guilt that should be associated with making it big? Humility is kind of like feeling guilt over doing so much better than those who are no better than yourself. It's how I feel, anyway.

Gorillaz – Dirty Harry Lyrics 12 years ago
Really, neither should be looked at as promoting gun violence. In no way is this a happy song glorifying anyone going out and shooting people up. This song is so obviously about a soldier that it hardly matters. A soldier carries a gun, not necessarily so that he feels he belongs, but to kill others before they kill him. Not saying that's a good thing, not saying war is a glorious thing, but that is the reason. That's the reason a police officer carries a gun, and really most sane people who own guns own them for that reason. (Plus, you know, hunting, which is pretty legit when done responsibly.) They're sad and horrible things, war and violence. And nations are cranking out these killing machines without any thought to where they go after they're finished using them. And it hardly seems like anyone else cares, either. War is F'ed up, homey.

I'm not sure a reference to guns or bullets necessarily has anything to do with Lennon. Granted, there will of course be songs written while his death is in mind, but this song was released on The Bends in '95. John Lennon died in 1980. There is some crucial information missing in order to make that connection between the two.

The Faint – Ballad of a Paralysed Citizen Lyrics 12 years ago
"taking a kids will be kids non chelance." Not sure what you're trying to say here. I'm thinking nonchalance for the last two words, but I don't understand anything else.

I think you could read the line about how the family "just move to make amends" in a few different ways. One would be that they actually moved away, which seems likely in a more self-concerned sort of way. Another that they're simply trying to do what they can to make amends, but nothing they do is going to fix the condition he's in. They're just going through the movements, perhaps in sincerity and perhaps not. Regardless, they can't fix his spinal cord.

The Faint – Ballad of a Paralysed Citizen Lyrics 12 years ago
I think the idea is more that this man is paralyzed due to a kid playing a joke on him. It's an upsetting incident, more the kid's fault. Was the kid actually being a brat, trying to trick the diver? Was s/he looking straight at the guard, smiling and making a stupid joke like people do in the water, thinking he was in on the joke? We don't know, but this character's life was changed, completely, by that incident.

Looking at incidents like this and understanding the fact that there are people affected in sad ways by normal situations like this helps to sober you as a person. There's a certain solemnity to life that a lot of people don't seem to grasp, and it's my personal opinion that all of us should do so.

Recently in early 2009, Trent was quoted calling Manson a "dopey clown" and that his skills and wits of writing have been dulled due to substance abuse, though firmly believes he has a good talent. Manson responded by making a passing mention and a joke about the nickname later on in the summer in an interview.

Metroactive:
The album kicks off with "Hot Dog," an aggressive evaluation of the word "fuck" and Durst's very personal reaction to Nine Inch Nails' "Starfuckers, Inc." (Reznor wrote the song with his former protégé Marilyn Manson in mind, but in the video he smashes plates with celebrity faces--Durst's included--printed on them).

MansonWiki:
Reznor was involved in a feud with the band Limp Bizkit (specifically their frontman Fred Durst) in the late 1990s, around the height of their popularity, calling Durst a "moron" and saying in a 1999 interview in Rolling Stone magazine, "Let Fred Durst surf a piece of plywood up my ass." It is noted, however, that Reznor is credited as a writer of the song "Hot Dog" on Limp Bizkit's album, Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water. This is due to this song's use of lyrics from the Nine Inch Nails song "Closer", in particular the phrase, "I want to fuck you like an animal." Reznor was put in the difficult position of having to give permission for his own lyrics to be used in a song mocking him but interviews at the time suggested that he thought it was best to allow permission rather than drag the issue out."

The story from my boyfriend is that Fred Durst said in an interview that he really respected Treznor, and Treznor didn't know about it. In a later interview, he was asked about Limp Bizit, and he said that they sucked. Presumably because they're not that great, and he was giving his honest opinion. Durst got his panties in a wad, did something or other, and Treznor put out this song. With that story in mind, it seemed like Trent was saying, "Fuck you, I'm huge. To me, it doesn't fucking matter what you cry about."

"i have arrived and this time you should believe the hype"

"i listened to everyone now i know that everyone was right
i'll be there for you as long as it works for me
i play a game it's called insincerity"

I always thought this song was saying fuck other stars, or fuck the way people grovel at celebrities' feet. I really enjoy seeing big names actually talking about petty bullshit like this, i.e. Hooker With a Penis by Tool. With some musicians, it's just annoying and boring. But it's nice to be able to throw around examples when celebrities are elevated as idols.

While Switchfoot is an awesome band with good intentions, they are partly a Christian band. They tend to market to Christians and mainstream audiences. To meditate upon the lesser things like hair and nails.

Que? I might be thinking about them in a different way, but I thought these two were big problems that society has. o.o' I get most everything else, but these trip me up.

[To keep it gutter when you utter. No, it won't stop
Until the ones that point their guns at Niggas get got!
YOU'RE GONNA GET GOT!
You let them Niggas get got.
You're gonna get got. Get popped. Get Cocked.
You let them Niggas get got. Let them Niggas get got!]

I don't much care for the talk putting down evolution, but this article talks about a kid with "gills."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recapitulation_theory
As a disclaimer, Haeckel's ideas aren't generally accepted, or at least they haven't been by all the biology professors I've encountered. I might find evolution plausible, but I don't want to start a fight about evolution. Those arguments always boil down to the uneducated fucks from both sides spamming it up, and unless you've got a PhD in this stuff AND have been studying it for years, I am not of the opinion that any of us know what we're talking about.

The first article makes me think I may have been right in assuming this song talks about cartilage, if I'm going along with the gills idea, which I am.

~*~

I said I'm the Scarecrow Man; I'm swingin' swingin'
I said I'm the Scarecrow Man; I'm swingin' swingin' from the hangin' tree

The clock clock clock on the wall
Is ticking away my time
The sentence was passed, now I'm paying for my crimes

I reach out, out
For the hands of time,
But they're out, of my reach
I said I reach out, out
For the setting sun
But it's out, gone out of my reach [ow]

The dust in the wind
Is blowing its way back to Horror Hill
A little girl, voodoo dolly sitting on the window sill
The broken glass sparkles in the light
Sign on the door tells me, tells me no one's, No One Home Tonight

But I said I'm the Scarecrow Man; I'm wasting, wasting away
And I'm swingin' swingin' on the hangin' tree

I do imagine the point of this song is about thinking for yourself. But honestly (and sadly) I don't doubt that a good number of Tool kids are pretty fond of this song without knowing the meanings. And I say kids, because honestly if you're a grown fucking adult and say you like a song, without knowing what it's saying or even talking about, you suck some pretty sweaty nuts.

I never paid much attention to Marilyn Manson, but my boyfriend talks about him at length on occasion. I imagine, when Manson hated his fans like he fucking should have, the type of attitude you're talking about is what he was singing about in certain songs.
