Brand New – Me vs. Maradona vs. Elvis Lyrics 13 years ago
I think the line that bothers me most is "Barely conscious in the door where you stand." This girl is not tipsy, or even crunked. She is about to pass out. When a girl is that intoxicated, it is really hard to argue that he gained consent. In fact, in several states, it would be considered rape if the guy were sober.

Brand New – The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot Lyrics 13 years ago
Wow. I always just assumed it was about the speaker cheating on his girlfriend, like KerryCherry. The girl is very ambivalent about dumping him. She felt like she had to break up with him because he cheated on her, but she still loves him. And he didn't seem nearly as sad about the whole thing as she expected, as indicated by the line "You wanted a solution, you just wanted to be missed." The chorus suggests they get back together because she still cares for him, but she's never going to trust him again.

Emmy the Great – Bad Things Coming, We Are Safe Lyrics 14 years ago
Pretty sure it's "I heard a sound across the walls/ Was like a wave sweeping houses from the shores". It kind of ties into the Biblical references, maybe? Sort of like the God's wrath Ed is scared of?

Emmy the Great – Two Steps Forward Lyrics 14 years ago
I think it's sort of a combination of sex and a relationship. I think it's about the same guy that "We Almost Had a Baby" is about, partly because that's also about a musician. It sounds like someone she started dating when she was a horny teenager, probably the first guy she slept with, at that age when girls confuse their hoohah with their heart. And since he was her first, she tried to make it into a meaningful relationship. Meanwhile, he probably thought of her as a hookup buddy. And when he got famous and started getting publicity, he moved onto greener pastures, and she realized that he never really cared about her at all.

Emmy the Great – Edward Is Deadward Lyrics 14 years ago
I imagined Edward as an ex-boyfriend, not just a close friend. The "threats" makes me think he threatened to kill himself if she ever ended the relationship. This also explains some of the guilt throughout the song.
As for Dan, I wonder if he wasn't just a friend, but a relative of Ed's in town for the wake that she'd been introduced to. Maybe she slept with him because he looked like Ed.

Jeremy Warmsley – The Boat Song (feat. Emmy the Great) Lyrics 14 years ago
Wow. Can't believe no one else has commented on this. Well, this song is amazing. Def an extended metaphor. Perhaps the neverending sea is life, and the rain is some hardship? Or perhaps just time passing by?

Emmy the Great – Paper Trails Lyrics 14 years ago
The first time I listened to this poem, I imagined a young girl sending letters to her boyfriend back in the country, probably her home town before she moved to London (that's why her sister is there to "clean her car"). In the letters she promises to have sex with him, then realizes she's not ready when they meet in person again. Then, the more I listened to the random energy, I started to wonder if the "promise" was for a commitment, instead of sex. The "wedding ring" and the imagery of unity, of things being sown together and dolls joining hands, makes me think this boy expected her to love him and marry him, moving back to the country.

Does anyone know who the guy is that she dated and ended up being famous? Was it Johnny Flynn? Was it Adam Beach? I heard she dated both of them.

Johnny Flynn – The Wrote and the Writ Lyrics 14 years ago
I tend to listen to Emmy the Great's "Paper Trails" after this song bc they sound like the same situation from two different perspectives. A woman making promises in letters and paper, but not following through in person.

Blind Pilot – Go On, Say It Lyrics 14 years ago
I must have a sick mind. I thought buried a bone was a sexual innuendo. To me this song is about infidelity.

Emmy the Great – City Song Lyrics 14 years ago
It's so interesting that the "you" could refer to both the child and the ex-lover. The line that kills me is "I don't remember you at all." She's trying to convince herself that this was a nothing relationship, that it was worth having an abortion to come to the city and make it big. But she still remembers every detail about him, like how he tasted, or what his face and mouth looked like.

Vanessa Carlton – Paradise Lyrics 14 years ago
To me, the line "nothing hurts when covered tucked in tight" has always made me think there is a child involved, as if a parent is ignoring that her child is being abused by her spouse. Of course it could be a house wife who is very fastidious about making beds to cope with an abusive relationship, but I've always imagined a mother tucking a beaten child into bed with a defeated expression. The mother keeps on telling the daughter "just one more day" they'll stay before leaving the abusive spouse. The mother "soothes her [the daughter's] mind with lies" that they'll leave, even as the daughter loses "the light that shined beneath her eyes"
