Thank you for sharing, this is fantastic |
The Mountain Goats – So Desperate Lyrics | 11 years ago |
The lines "And through the warm radio static I couldn’t hear my stage directions" reminds me of Empire Strikes Back, where, while filming in England, Mark Hamill was getting direction and/or Yoda's lines fed to him through an ear piece, and at one point Radio 1 was leaking through the frequency. He interrupted the take by pointing to ear and saying "Hey I got the Rolling Stones!" and they had to cut and tell him to pretend he didn't hear it if that happened again. Has nothing to do with the subject matter I'm sure but that's what I thought of ;) |
The Mountain Goats – Spent Gladiator 2 Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I thought maybe the line "that board game with the sliders" referred to Chutes and Ladders, then I goggled it and found there's an actual game called "Stay Alive" that uses sliders: http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/2770/stay-alive Nice, Jon ;) |

God that's a great quote |
Ben Folds – Protection Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I love the lyrics in the first verse - rhyming 'apprised' and 'devised' while using 2 different metaphors, come on that's great. Oh and the drum groove matched up with the rhythm of the piano part - YES. |

and they DID :D |
Ben Folds Five – Narcolepsy Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I'm sorry to hear that, but Ben has explained that the song is about emotional Narcolepsy, not the actual medical condition. I do know what real Narcolepsy is, as does Ben, but what he is getting at in this song is that people (I think he's refering more to men) shut down emotional when faced with a very stressful or very exciting situation. Of course taking the literal meaning of the song is fine too, if that's more personal. |
The Mountain Goats – Hast Thou Considered the Tetrapod Lyrics | 12 years ago |
This is gunna sound weird, but I had a dream, or perhaps more of a nightmare, about this song, from John's point of view. In the dream I was a child, coming home from school with a sense of dread as I went into the house. My dad, or step-dad, was home and I was scared to make him mad. He was in a good mood at that moment (which differs from the lyrics), but I was just going along with it and pretending I was happy too to not get him upset and avoid getting beaten. I don't have a step-dad and my real dad didn't get violent with me very often, so the dream had to have been based on this song/other songs from Sunset Tree, probably a combination of that and my life. It felt real in the moment and it was so awful. I felt completely trapped, just as I'm sure John did, and that if I made an attempt to escape it would make it worse. I've never been a victim of physical abuse, so I can't imagine how awful it would be, but I feel like I understand the feelings behind this song more after the dream than I did before it. Thanks for reading, just wanted to share that. Mountain Goats songs are such a great outlet for negative feelings - I feel a sense of release listening to them whenever I'm p***ed off or depressed. God bless. |
The Mountain Goats – Alpha Desperation March Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I find this song refreshing in that it's not as seething and serious as some of the other alpha couple songs; it's got some humor in it. The subplot that she owes $8,000, the "olly-olly-olly oxen free", etc. His laughing at the end always cracks me up haha. |
Rebecca Black – Friday Lyrics | 13 years ago |
This analysis is as great as the song itself. |
Tally Hall – The Whole World and You Lyrics | 13 years ago |

Tally Hall – The Bidding Lyrics | 13 years ago |
"i graduated at the top, i like to take advantage of the bourgeoisie" Love that line, mostly the way he sings it. Well I just love Joe's voice in general. |
Tally Hall – Be Born Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I didn't realize the singer was singing to an about-to-be-born baby until about the 3rd time listening to it. And it exploded my brain. |
Tally Hall – Taken for a Ride Lyrics | 13 years ago |
"bumble mumble make the rounds no matter what you'll seem profound it's useless just to worry" This line is totally about writing (song writing, poetry, what have you) and it's awesome. |
Tally Hall – Welcome to Tally Hall Lyrics | 13 years ago |
This song rocks so hard. I hope so bad that the 5 tied guys come back with their new album soon + an Ann Arbor/SE Michigan show!! |
Ben Folds Five – Underground Lyrics | 14 years ago |
That is Darren Jessee, the drummer. And LOL that is a perfect explanation of how he is saying that!! hahaha |
Ben Folds Five – Underground Lyrics | 14 years ago |
YES!! You wrote this almost 5 years ago and you'll never read this but I LOVE that part! I just thinking about it recently and how clever these guys were....sneakin stuff like that in, wuhaha. |
Ben Folds Five – Your Redneck Past Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This song is weird but so freakin cool at the same time. |
Ben Folds Five – The Last Polka Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Lol, right? Yeah I have a feeling...maybe this song was written about Ben's divorce from his first wife, Anna Goodman, or based of it somewhat. He was 25 at the time of the divorce I think, plus she has co-writing credits for the song. Either way, I friggin' love this song, it's so powerful and the piano part is EPIC. One of the best songs ever written, IMO. I mean, it's a polka, in minor, c'mon. |
Ben Folds Five – Selfless, Cold, and Composed Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Had the pleasure of reciting this song for a piano class, so beautiful. Very Christmas-y/winter sounding, I think (sleigh bells @ the end!). Ben said that he wrote the song as a challenge, when he thought about an ex-girlfriend who was angry after they broke up, and complained he was too nice. So, he wrote the song from her point of view, so really Ben is singing about himself! I absolutely love the piano on this one, especially during the bridge! Again, so beautiful. |
Ben Folds Five – Regrets Lyrics | 14 years ago |
True story: I drank far, far too much one night out bar-hopping with friends, and wound up in the hospital. The entire blur of an experience I had that night/early morning, I had this song running through my head, as I had just discovered it a few weeks prior. Fitting, no? That, and there's "Hospital Song" on the same album! |
Ben Folds Five – Missing The War Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Very well said. I believe Ben said an interview that that is what it's about. I originally took the literal meaning and thought it was about a war veteran back home with his wife, maybe missing the action or the adrenaline rush (think "Hurt Locker") or it, and he wasn't meant for civilian life. Both takes on it are interesting I think. That's part of the awesomeness of the metaphors Ben uses - they could have many different meanings. |
Ben Folds Five – Kate Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This song is pure bliss, and REALLY fun to play...everyone should learn it ok GO |
Ben Folds Five – Kate Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Is your mixtape a masterpiece? lol |
Ben Folds Five – Kalamazoo Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Maybe he just saw it on a map and thought it was a funny name and decided to write a song about it. Or he had a bad experience there or something....probably something completely different, I don't know, I'd like to know too. I LOVE how, on Ben's solo version, the song explodes into a disco 1/2 way through the song...makes it like 10 times better. |
Ben Folds Five – Jackson Cannery Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Yeah, and Ben said the guy went off to try and find U2 or something! Unless he was joking, haha. He also said the guy's mom couldn't get a hold of him for like a month, and didn't know where he was, which would explain the lyrics in the bridge. The "she's whispering to the moon: 'I hope he don't join ya soon'" is probably a reference to her praying that he doesn't die! Damn Ben is freaking lyrical genious, that's such a cool way to phrase that. |
Ben Folds Five – For All The Pretty People Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Lol I wish there were more songs of them just dicking around. |
Ben Folds Five – Eddie Walker Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Ok, I like the line about Mary Jo, "No she couldn't come she says 'hello'...no, Eddie Walker, she dodn't hate yer guts *Fist slam*" - I think it shows that Eddie is kind of socially paranoid, and assumes everyone hates him, and gets angry about it. The singer is trying to convince him that Mary Jo doesn't hate his guts, and that none of his other friends (that he assumes hate his guts) do either, and the fist slam shows frustration, maybe on both sides, over Eddie always being afraid of people hating him, and making a big deal out of it. Anyways, I just like that little bit a lot, I guess cause I can relate a bit. |
Ben Folds Five – Cigarette Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Exxxactly right. Also, as mentioned, the lyrics come from 1 really run-on sentence in a newspaper article. |
Ben Folds Five – Boxing Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Very well said. A brilliant song, I really thought they should have included it in the soundtrack for the movie "Ali". Amazing that Ben could write this at the age of 21 (that's how old he said he was when he wrote at a concert I was at recently), it's so sad that it's difficult to listen to at times for me. There are parts of the song that people can relate to outside the boxing context as well: "Another day, I'm not cut out for this. I just know what to say" - difficultly of having to struggle through someone day in & day out, not feeling up for it anymore, with a possible meaning for the 'I just now what to say' line as they only know what to say, possiblly to hide that they are unhappy and can't do it anymore, but they don't know what to do. "Sometimes I punch myself hard as I can yelling nobody cares hoping someone will tell me how wrong I am" - pretty self-explanatory, but a really powerful line for me, that I love to sing when I'm angry to vent. Obviously not literally punching ourselves, but doing self-destructive things out of anger wanting someone to notice and tell us they care. I also like the stool creaks :) |
Ben Folds Five – Barrytown Lyrics | 14 years ago |
F***ing awesome cover. I suggest watching the performance they did of it on Letterman, it's on youtube :) |
Ben Folds – Adelaide Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Lol I guess there are some inside jokes in this song that you wouldn't get unless you've been there. It is a fun song but maybe kind of sad for Ben now after the divorce :( |
Ben Folds Five – Narcolepsy Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I believe the main meaning of this song, as has been discussed, is that people tend to shut down emotionally when they are very upset or very happy, in this case probably while in a relationship ("I left you awake to cry the tears"). To me though, this has an added meaning having to do with depression. Often when someone is depressed, they just want to sleep to not feel the emotional pain ("Nothing hurts when I go to sleep"). I also feel that, when they're depressed, they don't feel like themselves, like it's some emotional problem that has taken them over and they can't shake out of it ("I'm drowning, save me, wake me up"). Anyways, a very emotionally powerful song that almost always moves me when I listen to it, very beautiful. |
