Liars – The Exact Color of Doubt Lyrics 11 years ago
I think the lyrics might actually be "I'll always be your friend" instead of "I'll always be afraid". If you read the rest of the lyrics, it would make more sense that it's friend especially since the very next line reads "I'll never let you down".

I also hear "We know now we want more" instead of "We know now we won't go".

Santigold – Disparate Youth Lyrics 12 years ago
After "Oh, we set our dreams to carry us" I hear:

"And if they don't fly we will run"

Which is more poetic and makes more sense - but I may be wrong?

Marina and the Diamonds – Hollywood Lyrics 14 years ago
Haha you know what's funny? I was just on youtube watching the video for this and some person posted a response saying "patriotic bullshit" ahahahaha. That's what I find so amazing about this song, to some people it sounds like she's pro-hollywood when she's really taking the piss out of hollywood culture and it's unrealistic representation of what your life should be and what you should look like. Yeah cause

"Hollywood infected your brain
You wanted kissing in the rain
Living in a movie scene
Puking American dreams"

is soooooo patriotic. What a silly person. How funny is it going to be if this song catches on in America and you find girls singing to this thinking it's pro-Hollywood and then realise that it's not haha. "So, like, we're not supposed to like Hollywood??? I should love myself for the way I am and not have an unrealistic perception of life and my body image??? Oh my God!". Yes I really do hope Marina catches on and she reaches that much needed audience who need to realise that it's personality and not physical appearance that matters. When you love yourself you become physically attractive anyway! Confidence is sexy. Yes girls and boys, yes it is!

Marina and the Diamonds – Girls Lyrics 14 years ago
Love it. A social commentary about how some males view females. I'm pretty sure Marina is a feminist? Someone can correct me on this if I'm wrong.

This to me, is making a comment about how a woman's role in society is to be 'soft' 'attractive' and 'well mannered'. If you are not those things, you are not perceived as a 'lady'. This all relates back to living in a patriarchal society (a society controlled by what suits heterosexual men the best). Why can't females be strong? - because it threatens a man's role in society. Males are supposed to be the physically strong ones.

"Girls are not meant to fight dirty
Never look a day past thirty"

- Females are expected to look beautiful all the time (make up anyone?) but this same pressure isn't forced upon men. Now that's a bit unfair isn't it??

"Not gonna bend over and curtsey for you"

- This to me, is stating that she is not going to give in to society's expectations of what a female is meant to be like.

"Girls they never hear from me
Because I fall asleep when they speak
Of all the calories they eat
All they say is "na na na na na"

- It's important to listen to what anyone has to say, female OR male. If you lend anyone an ear, you'll find that it gets you further than being ignorant and unattentive. It's also funny how some men DO complain about women talking so much about their weight issues, when in reality, some MEN are the ones who have contributed to this same problem. If men made women feel like they didn't have to be beautiful all the time (which is a ridiculous expectation), then maybe some women wouldn't have to talk so much about their weight issues and insecurities. Regardless, if someone doesn't want to give you the time of day, to hear what you have to say, they are not worth it.

I could analyse this song forever but basically it's a message to girls out there, that you can be however you like or whoever you want. Don't let society's expectations of what it is to be a 'lady' cripple your aspirations and dreams. If you want to drive big trucks like men do, do it. If you want to be physically strong, do it. Strive to make yourself happy before you worry about making someone else happy.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Marina is a genius. I've been waiting for a long time for a pop artist to come out with songs that are easy on the ears (to be more accessible for the masses) and to have meaningful messages in said songs. Alternative and more obscure artists with meaningful messages in their songs are less accessible (which is unfortunate but a reality), so I knew that only through pop music, would you be able to reach a wider audience and an audience that actually needs this type of positive influence. Because it's that same audience who are looking up to people like Paris Hilton, have a distorted perception of beauty and seem to value physical appearance more than personality. I just hope that the masses do latch onto Marina as they would with most other pop artists. The world needs this.

Marina and the Diamonds – Are You Satisfied? Lyrics 14 years ago
Wow. Pop music with meaning. Marina is a genius. With her pop sensibility I think she might be able to reach a wider audience than an alternative artist might. To me, this song is about understanding that if you're unhappy with something in your life, you have the power to change it. If you're depressed, seek help. If you're bored, do something fun, life is what you make it. A lot of people are self-defeating and do the opposite of what's going to help a negative situation.

Genius.

Cansei de Ser Sexy – Beautiful Song Lyrics 14 years ago
I agree, it does sound like it's about life on tour, it can also be about just living your life in general. Going out there and having fun, making mistakes, learning from them etc. The title of the song is well suited, it definately is a beautiful and nostalgic song. I also picked up on the sad vibe monstrrr, the song makes me feel the same way I do when I'm recalling a fun memory from the past but feeling sad about it at the same time because I can't relive it for some reason (person moved/passed away, place is no longer accessible to me etc.).

Handsome Furs – What We Had Lyrics 14 years ago
Also one of my favourite handsome furs song, the music definately doesn't sound typically down but you can still pick up on the sad vibe.

Before I knew the lyrics I imagined that this song was about an ex lover, "and what we had don't mean a thing and what we had is already gone". And then when he sings "I sit outside with the rain now and time rolls slow", I sort of took this as meaning, he's watching his ex lover from the outside, move on with someone else but he still hasn't - the rain signifying his depressed state and time feeling like it rolls so slow because he hasn't found someone else yet.

After I read the lyrics on here though, I interpreted it as sort of being about an abandoned farm or town. Maybe it became unfertile, or just deserted for whatever reason. Where then you can interpret "and what we had don't mean a thing and what we had is already gone", accordingly. All the work and effort they put into the farm/town doesn't mean a thing anymore because it didn't work out, and now all the crops have died and the buildings are crumbling - "what we had is already gone". So then when he sings "as if hands might float right down from above and change this place" - as if God or whatever else, might some day make the ground fertile again, or make the conditions more livable.

Then the whole rain part at the end is just about waiting and hoping for such things to happen. He's outside because all the buildings have crumbled, so he's just sitting in the rain, waiting. At the same time realising though that it may never happen - 'but they may never shut off'. I also always thought this song had a country vibe to it with the way the guitar is played so that's how I probably moved into the mind frame of this being small country town/farmer related. With my initial interpretation, I did imagine the story taking place in a country town. Hence why he might be watching the new romance of his ex lover unfold from the outside because country towns are small and he would be running into them regularly.
