Ben Folds – The Luckiest Lyrics 13 years ago
This song was released during the middle of his marriage to Frally Hynes, who birthed his first two children, Louis and Gracie. Five years later he filed for divorce. When I saw him in concert in Milwaukee back in January, people in the front row kept shouting for him to play this song, so he finally relented, but began playing it in a minor key, before saying "I'm shitting on my own song" and restarting it the way it was originally written. I wonder if he feels like the singer he and Nick Hornby describe in "Belinda."

Counting Crows – August and Everything After Lyrics 13 years ago
It is a little difficult to listen to because of its rambling style, but it really perfectly fits the mood of the song and the message of the lyrics. He's just laying himself bare and saying everything, refusing to worry about fitting it into just a few minutes. He's clearing his mind and clearing his heart.

I meant to add this, but forgot while I was typing. The part of the quote talking about "...from December 'til today..." could be a reference to the song Long December. Just a thought.

Counting Crows – Come Around Lyrics 14 years ago
My favorite Counting Crows quote of all time has to be from the second verse of St. Robinson, where Duritz says "I keep thinking tomorrow is coming today, so I am endlessly waiting." Listening to this song, the lyric that always jumps out to me is "I have waited for tomorrow from December 'til today; and I have started loving sorrow along the way." I like to think that for our hero, Arthur Robinson, things have finally changed, and he's moving on into the world happier. Tomorrow finally came. That might not be how Duritz intended it, but it's through that perspective that I'll always listen to the Counting Crows. A battle finally won.

Counting Crows – Come Around Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't know you, I don't know who you are, and I understand it might be a long time before you even notice this, but I just want to say that I love the passage...

"Do you spend your whole sunday sitting on the edge of the bed wishing you could undo the night before? Or do you get up and move on with your life?"

...that you just posted. If you came up with that on your own you're a genius, and if you heard it somewhere could you tell me where?

Ben Kweller – Penny on the Train Track Lyrics 14 years ago
I think that this video offers a little bit more insight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvuRN-mfM4g .

Ben is just saying to just go do things and have fun, because we're all pennies on a train track, and our train is eventually going to come. His line about picking up the guitar after the train takes him away is telling people that when he dies he just wants them to enjoy their own lives even more. Everybody grows up. Everybody gets old. Everybody dies. Why not have fun while you're at it?

Ben Folds Five – Evaporated Lyrics 14 years ago
In a story similar to ilikefruchocs, I first heard this song for the first time while taking a shower and listening to my ipod on a night last spring when I was very depressed and disappointed in myself. I didn't know what song it was but I recognized Ben Folds' voice and went downstairs and spent half an hour listening to Ben Folds songs on my computer until I found this one, the last one I clicked on. It meant more to me then than any song had ever meant before and it is still one of my favorite songs. It is also the first song I ever performed by myself when I played and sang it for a talent show this fall at my high school. It is so simple and yet so beautiful because of all the emotion that Ben Folds put into it. Although he wrote it about his dad, I think it can apply to anyone who is depressed and disappointed in themselves. I know Ben Folds will never read this but if for some reason he does, I want to tell him thanks for being there for me.

Five for Fighting – Two Lights Lyrics 14 years ago
This is such a beautiful song. Could you please correct the typo in the first line where it says "brace" instead of "brave?" Sorry I'm being a little OCDish...

Counting Crows – St. Robinson In His Cadillac Dream Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm never sure what to think about this song. I guess it all ends up depending what mood I'm in. It definitely could be about suicide, with the "people will say that they knew me so well" line, and the "I keep thinking tomorrow is coming today, so I am endlessly waiting" line. However, it also could be referring to how when tomorrow does FINALLY come, and Arthur Robinson is happy or famous or whatever it is he wants, people will be saying how well they knew him 'way back when.' Arthur Robinson is saying to all the people that he knew who will always say, 'I hung out with him before he was a big deal,' that they didn't really know him, and that they can go to hell for all he cares just for pretending to know him. Overall, this is a fantastic song who's lyrics seem to apply to everyone.

Dexys Midnight Runners – Come On Eileen Lyrics 14 years ago
Toura loura loural is an irish lullaby. Seeing as the group is british, it is possible that the "we can sing just like our fathers" is a reference to the singer's father singing this lullaby to him when he was a child.
