Metallica – Hero of the Day Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is about war; they way war separates families, leaves the warriors with post traumatic stress and yet still somehow strengthen our familial bonds.

>The window burns to light the way back home
>A light that warms no matter where they've gone

This opening rhyme lets us know that there is a light in the window, more specifically, fire light. Candles placed in the window during the holidays represent love ones off at war. It is a light that burns to light the way back home.

>They're off to find the hero of the day
>But what if they should fall by someone's wicked way?

In wars fought by American soldiers it is a rule that you never leave a soldier behind, not even if he has died. This is to keep morale up. The enemy could parade a dead body around or even torture a person to gain intel. Often these rescue missions are very very dangerous and involve returning to hostile territory.

>Still the window burns
>Time so slowly turns
>Someone there is sighing
>Keepers of the flames
>Do you feel your name?
>Did you hear your babies crying?

these two rhyming triplets show us the person or family at home, still tending to the candle in the window, anxiously awaiting the return of their loved ones. The possibility of their death is disconcerting but the family at home is very powerless in this situation. All they can do is sigh.
The last two lines tie into the practice of torturing POW's; a practice very prevalent during Vietnam. Tortured people commonly call to their loved ones in pain and anguish.

>Mama, they try and break me
>Still, they try and break me

The purpose of torture is often to "break" a persons will and make them disclose information.

>Excuse me while I tend to how I feel
>These things return to me that still seem real

Post traumatic stress is a disorder caused by traumatic experiences. Rape victims often suffer from it, and tend to seize up or have dreams and intrusive memories of this trauma. The same goes for people who survived wars.

>Now, deserving, this easy chair
>But the rocking stopped by wheels of despair

Veterans deserve respect and comfort in their civilian life.

>Don't want your aid
>But the fist I make
>For years can't hold or feel
>No, I'm not all me
>So please excuse me while I tend to how I feel

Veterans can also feel a strong sense of independence due to their experiences and may feel ashamed of receiving help. The trauma of war often leaves them a different person.

>But now the dreams and waking screams
>That ever last the night

The nightmares and post traumatic stress is brought up again

>So build the wall, behind it crawl
>And hide until it's light
>So can you hear your babies crying now?

The war veteran can not explain the things that has happened to him; the things he has seen or the manner he has been changed, to some one that has not experienced it first hand. They often retreat and hide their emotions instead of expressing them.

Overall this song is about the Vietnam war, a POW who was tortured and the strain it has put on his emotional and mental well being as well as the health of his family he returned to.

Pink Floyd – Wearing the Inside Out Lyrics 14 years ago
From morning to night I stayed out of sight
Didn't recognize I'd become
No more than alive I'd barely survive
In a word...overrun

Won't hear a sound
>He's curled into the corner
From my mouth
>But still the screen is flickering
I've spent too long
>With an endless stream of garbage to
On the inside out
>...curse the place
My skin is cold
>In a sea of random images
To the human touch
>The self-destructing animal
This bleeding heart's
>Waiting for the waves to break
Not beating much

I murmured a vow of silence and now
I don't even hear when I think aloud
Extinguished by light I turn on the night
Wear its darkness with an empty smile

I'm creeping back to life
My nervous system all awry
I'm wearing the inside out

>Look at him now
>He's paler somehow
>But he's coming around
>He's starting to choke
>It's been so long since he spoke
>Well he can have the words right from my mouth

And with these words I can see
Clear through the clouds that covered me
Just give it time then speak my name
Now we can hear ourselves again

I'm holding out
>He's standing on the threshold
For the day
>Caught in fiery anger
When all the clouds
>And hurled into the furnace
Have blown away
>...to curse the place
I'm with you now
>He's torn in all directions
Can speak your name
>And still the screen is flickering
Now we can hear
>Waiting for the flames to break
Ourselves again

The Dillinger Escape Plan – Setting Fire To Sleeping Giants Lyrics 14 years ago
The song is about drug abuse and prostitution. In many foreign countries women are given heroin from who they think are a friend. They then get hooked on the junk and have to visit their pusher over and over for their fix. Often times they are forced into prostitution to support the habit. Heroin addiction is one of the most serious forms of addiction and is nearly impossible with out hospital intervention. In these third world countries hospitals are anything but free, and only the well-to-do get the opportunity to go into a treatment center.
Setting fire to sleeping giants means to do something you know dawn well that you should not do. An educated person knows that they had better not hang out or do heroin, but often they do anyhow due to peer pressure and other factors.

"I'm think bout another world tonight." Could mean the narrator of the song is high himself.

"and it breaks my heart like dancing up all night ride so high we both start thinking 'bout another world tonight and it feels so wrong like nothing we've ever felt before " Could represent the remorse and wonderment the narrator and the woman both feel for trying the drug out, and possibly the man feeling bad about turning another person into a slave to a chemical.
"Strangers candy" The old advice adults give children about candy from strangers stems from fears in the early 60's that candy could be laced with drugs; specifically with LDS.

"let's go for a long ride" Obviously another drug reference. Possibly the act of kidnapping as well.
"I'll show you places you won't ever want to leave." The chains of addiction.

"they think this body's a dead note dancing to the beat but they'll never see this corpse coming 'till it kills them" People making the mistake of underestimating the addictive qualities of narcotics. Most people that start drug habits do it thinking they can stop at any time they want.

@burningmelon Your loss. I do not mind that a band is able to make more money then before by releasing a single. They are able to reach a broader audience by not sounding as caustic as they used to. The mathcore is still there, irregular tempos and swift time signature changes aplenty.
