Frankie Goes to Hollywood – The Power Of Love Lyrics

The Hooded Claw is a character from the Penelope Pitstop cartoons. This song was originally intended to be quite ironic, with the focus on its camp imagery. The version that became a Christmas classic was slightly faster and pushed the irony to the background. The Hooded Claw obviously remained. |

The mother country is Britain, from whom the U.S. gained independence and is the 'illegitimate daughter'. The 'legs were then spread around the world' bit refers to the rest of Britain's empire. America is illegitimate and a 'bastard' because Britain never intended for her to be "born" - freedom "raped" Britain and created the U.S. |

The way this song progresses is perfect. When the beat comes in for the first time, the verse, the 'Run from the lights, run from the night, run for your life' bit, when Gil Scott-Heron turns up. Amazing. |

Panda Bear – Take Pills Lyrics

I think this song is about how his mother dealt with his father dying, and I'm surprised that no-one has really mentioned it. The focus seems to have been on prescription medicine. The first verse is quite muted, with his singing almost obscured, and describes the grief his mother felt (my mom's ripping off her hands/one flake at a time) and the advice she gave him when he was young and she was still strong.
The second verse is then suddenly happier and bouncier, as Panda Bear recites back to his mother the advice she gave him. He's suddenly the man in his family, and can't rely on his mother for strength - this strength and positivity has to come from within himself. Strength, positivity, and the growing up he had to do after his father died again appears on 'My Girls'. He's older now, he has a wife and kids, and these are his only concerns. He's had to grow up, and his father's death ('on my father's grave') is a major cause of this. 'Take Pills' is the start of this process. He has his period of grief, but then comes out of it stronger. |

Hot Chip – Alley Cats Lyrics

I'm convinced that around the "Oh there's no pain I know" bit that it's mixed with an alternate line (sung by Joe, I think) going "Oh, there is no pain I don't know." I'm probably just hearing things, but I like pretending that it says that as well. Maybe it was intentionally meant to sound similar, idk.
Anyway, it's a great song with great lyrics. So many different bits to love. |
