I think this song is a good example of how people interpret songs differently based on their own life experience. I was 15 when the song came out and now 5 years later I dare to say I understand it now and in a way I didn't back then. When you are still very young you believe that one day, quite soon, you'll meet a boy that will always truly love you, whose heart is as pure and innocent as yours and he will do everything right, he'll fix you, make your life better- and he's good-looking too! And you wait for this person, you don't look around into the real world, you stay in your fantasies, disappointed of the fact that all the guys around you act so differently from him. One day, after having waited oh-so long, you meet a man who steals your heart. He isn't anything like you imagined your love to be "he doesn't look anything like Jesus", in fact he's not that innocent, good-looking or loving by any means, he hurts you but he's the first to turn your head, to charm you in a manner that no other guy has ever did before ("talks like a gentleman" just like ME68 has said before). And this girl falls for this because it feels good or at least that's what she believes. She sticks with him (more than you'll ever know) however as an young adult starts to realize where she got to. She realizes her unhappiness with how everything went and at times she thinks back ("and sometimes you close your eyes/and see the place where you used to live/when you were young") of the time when she still had this dream, the belief in something so absolutely beautiful and good, this feeling of security based on a lack of knowledge about the "real world". I feel like every "when you were young" is a mourning, a yearning for this long gone naivity. |

well i can't really figure it out either but my first thoughts are 1. bird: he'll 'fly away'/ leave her one day, you can't keep him, he won't be faithful (kinda reminded me of the hawking imagery Shakespeare's character Othello uses to describe Desdemona's adultery...lol sorry) you see, this imagery is nothing new: birds are free, wild and they never settle down. 2.he seems to like her and he's afraid that he might like her even more so he's warning her "don't make me make you fall in love" because guys that hook up with many girls start to gain this "one personality" they always adopt when they're with them. This means being very aloof and impersonal, playing games etc. But he just might start to care about her which means that he'd change his behaviour towards her. he might become much more personal, caring and passionate (or playing even crazier games?XD) which involves the risk of falling for him. But well he insists that this "won't mean a thing to [him]". he's "bird" who will only break her heart in the end. |

@ OP I've been calling him "mysogynistic and homophobic" a few months ago when I first came in contact with his lyrics. I was pissed off, I can tell you. I called him immature and started tripping "Rape is not funny! if you know someone who has been really raped, it's just dumb and disgusting to use it as a provocation!" but then there is point when you start to actually get it, if you can relate to it. you say "this guy is disgusting"- I don't know if you know Kafka but he used the degrading metaphor of a -guess what disgusting-bug in "The Metamorphosis" to characterize himself. you know why he would do that? I'm sorry if i'm being far-fetched and phony right now but I just want to make clear that artists have a gd reason why they present themselves in a certain way. unless they're rebecca black of course. i guess she just likes fridays. |

interesting point. i was persuaded by people saying "oh he's just trying to be classy", now i changed my mind. kanye has indeed said and done lots of douchebagey things but that's just because in contrast to the majority of the artists who are just pr puppets, he speaks his mind and he never pretends. of course he's being insensitive but this song shows that he knows about it, he feels bad about it but he can't change who he is. to my mind, this genuineness is always reflected in his music. there isn't a single song by Kanye west that has ever make me thing he'd have only recorded it to make money. i agree, he's a genius and for me it's sad to see that society has finally been able to make him feel that bad about himself. also what kind of woman would be mad if kanye west sent her pics of his dick??! damn, i'd feel honoured! |

i agree with azile, it's about poverty in the third world countries but also about how the hunger of these people turns them into criminals ( ->wolves, hunting for food). "Road runner, road runner Going hundred mile per hour" describes how they run away when they've stolen e.g. food, you run for your life. "I'm knocking on the doors of your hummer hummer" critizes the big gap between poor and rich, the poor distribution of money in our world. she's basically saying that they're people in the world sitting in their 70 k cars while others can't even afford a piece of bread. and that they should just give off a damn piece of their piles of money. i always thought she'd be saying "I'm a woooolf/ I'm a road runner" instead of world runner.think of the looney tunes where the coyote (wolf/culprit) always hunts the road runner (victim). if so, it could mean that the criminals are victims themselves, simply because poverty has driven them into crime. |

"Out of the laundry bin, I found my innocence again" i really like the imagery of this part. it might describe how you feel in your sober, depression-free moments. you might feel like you've found your innocence again (the person feels probably guilty for being depressed because "maybe, its all been in (his) head", saying his feelings are unjustified)you feel good actually and your mind is finally clear.but you feel worn out just like the clothing in the laundry bin, simply because depression leaves its marks on you. it's just really exhausting. |

i agree that the yellow horse is linked to cabs and i think it's a metaphor for casual hook-ups. "and our drinks were just poured/Look outside someone's waiting/with a yellow horse" he and his encounter are about to leave "With a golden hand by your fortress side/but without magic" well golden hand, i don't maybe this refers to satisfaction? because the touches are golden, meaning satisfying..or maybe it's just my pervy mind. without magic means that it's no real love. "Somebody tell me it won't be long/'cause a horse is not a home" he's tired of constantly having short affairs because they only represent the journey (=horse ride) while true love feels like home, having arrived and being able to rest. "Uninvited to the play/where language doesn't hurt/with nothing on my shirt" the play should be clear, where language doesn't hurt means he and the other person only talk about superficial things since there are no strings attached. having nothing on your shirt means that you're difficult to be identified, he'd get lost in the shuffle which means that he's just anybody to this person, he will easily be forgotten. |
