Green Day – 21 Guns Lyrics 14 years ago
Ok, so this song is oh most definately about Green Day's career and selling out. 21 guns...21 years? It was most likely written soon after the end of their American Idiot tour (21 years of Green Day that year).

The first verse would be about the record labels "cramping their style" or however you wish to put it. "Does the pain way out the pride"? The pain of seeing their music mutilated for popularity instead of their artistic vision.

In the chorus, they give up on trying to fight the man (throwing their arms into the sky/give up the fight). "When youre at the end of the road/and youve lost all sense of control"--Again, loss of control of their music, and the end of their true musical career.

"Your thoughts have taken their toll"--The rebeliousness of their music has been whitled down by popularity, aka selling out. "Your faith walks on broken glass"--All the fans that dont truly like or appreciate their music, and only listen to the popular songs. "Nothings ever built to last/Youre in ruins"--The fall of their musical career and descent into old age and inability.

The next part "Did you try to live on your own When you burned down the house and home? Did you stand too close to the fire? Like a liar looking for forgiveness from a stone" I believe to be about the possible ways to cope with the popularity and depression that follows selling out to the man. "When you burned down the house and home" a.k.a. when you lost what was important to you and what the general domain of yourself. Did you stand too close to the fire? Like a liar looking for forgiveness from a stone" The other side of selling out, immersing yourself in the popularity, and deceiving your heart and passion. The stone isn't literal, more symbolic of the views that SHOULD be meaningful to you.

The last part "When it's time to live and let die, And you can't get another try. Something inside this heart has died; You're in ruins" shows complete fall to the principles of popular music, and Green Day is "In Ruins" since what they stood for has died.

This song is a sentimental nod to their career and process of selling out and becoming popular, with fair-weathered fans who jump on the band wagon at the drop of a hat. While the song is seemingly an anti-war song, underneath the surface is Green Day's memoir of their career.
