Vampire Weekend – I Think Ur a Contra Lyrics
| 14 years ago

This song to me is in a romantic context any way you hash it out. However, in an interview on sirius it seemed like the "contra" was as if to say this girl is the antagonist to him who is the obvious protagonist. I think it's about the conflict that ended the relationship and that she lied and "turned away" from him when he did nothing but right by her. He is saying I think you're the one who screwed this up I did everything I could and you didn't return the favor aka she didn't "try". It basically to means he was the good guy who did everything for her and she screwed him over. |

The Decemberists – Margaret in Captivity Lyrics

Of course the rake beat the hell out of her he killed his own three children completely dispassionately. As for Rake=William theories they still hold no water in the entire course of events. By saying Rake is William you ignore that the Rake crossed the Annan Water in The Crossing and William crossed in Annan Water...it would be pretty but it doesn't hold up |

i love this interpretation, and i agree that Isiah and William could not be the same person, the timeline is wrong and something that important to the story would have been intimated a little more obviously to the listeners.
As for the Annan water interpretation is makes perfect sense. and this explains why Annan would let the beast through only to save Margaret then take her back along with him on their return |

The Decemberists – The Abduction of Margaret Lyrics

amongst other things than the rake song being necessary preceding this song to introduce the rake to the story there is also evidence in The Queen's Rebuke/ Crossing, Annan Water, and Margaret in Captivity that the rake has margaret and the beast is seeking to get her back |

The Decemberists – The Rake's Song Lyrics

this is impossible because the rake is flown across the annan water by the queen and the rake enters the story because the queen wants to keep Margaret away from her son the beast. the deal you speak of is that he is given the night and then she brings in the rake. it is impossible that the rake would be involved in the deal with the annan water when "the crossing" in the previous song title denotes that the rake with his abducted Margaret have already made this crossing. This song is simply the introduction of the villain of the story and the fulfillment of the most important line of the album "consider this your debt repaid" |

The Decemberists – Won't Want for Love (Margaret in the Taiga) Lyrics

the rake and the beast are two different characters. the beast clearly loves Margaret and the rake is enlisted by the queen to keep Margaret away from her son. I.E. the end of the album when the beast is chasing after the rake and must try to cross the Annan Water which the queen has already flown the rake(with the abducted Margaret) across said water.(which is outlined in the half of the title of the previous song "The Crossing") |

The Decemberists – A Bower Scene Lyrics

The sister is clearly a nun and the cistern described is a baptismal font. I believe the sister is asking Margaret when she will baptize the baby, i.e. when the baby will be born. It also could be that she has gone to a nun as a confidant and the nun wishes Margaret to be baptized herself. |
