Tegan and Sara – Drove Me Wild Lyrics 11 years ago
This is probably my favorite track off heartthrob. Love the way those sisters sing “why-yuld.”

Tegan was really into this person, probably when they were very young together, and her significant other was the one who tried to keep her cool, determine how fast or slow they went, in spite of Tegan’s uninhibited desire for her combined with an infamous habit of rushing/stalling/complicating spiraling relationships out of control.

Whether they made it or ended up breaking it off in the end doesn’t matter, to me at least. The fleeting infatuation and bliss that is quintessential of a relationship’s beginning is conveyed beautifully, and is totally human.

Wilco – You and I Lyrics 13 years ago
____ i like how Jeff says he doesn't need or want to know anything about her, and that really she doesn't need to know that much about him. they like each other, they have something special, isn't that enough? allowing yourself to be yourself while in a relationship, and allowing the other person to be himself or herself in your relationship. that's an art.

No Doubt – Different People Lyrics 14 years ago
--------i went to see no doubt last summer and before she sang this song gwen called this guy (who was so dressed up in appropriate ska wear for the show) from the audience up on stage and he asked for a picture with her on his camera because it was his birthday or something and she took a picture of the two of them together. then they played this song with a bunch of pictures of different characters and fans they've come across in the band's time playing and touring together. it was so touching, i still get choked up thinking about it!

this is how i feel almost every weekend. and i don't even gamble. just spending yourself on a good time, maybe regretting it the next day, but still getting to meet interesting people and learn the "hard way" how to be "responsible."

----- i love this interpretation as well!!! great job :) .... i feel like a lot of ReSpekt's songs are about being lonely, especially "Summer in the City" off Begin to Hope, how she "went to a protest just to rub aginst strangers."

Regina Spektor – Dance Anthem of the 80's Lyrics 14 years ago
------- great posts!! i would like to say that, if these children/people/boys and girls who watch each other eat (sex is an empty act, nothing substantial, it's casual) want to watch each other sleep that it's actually sleeping.... you tell a lot about a person by watching them sleep, and it's a quiet, underscored, intimate thing that doesn't require the (empty) act of sex.

and don't forget her line: They want to be watched, they want to be washed.... not a typo i'm thinking...

Phish – Backwards Down The Number Line Lyrics 14 years ago
this song i find extremely touching. while the origins of this song are well-known, coming from Trey's friend Tom, i find joejefferyCT's interpretation insightful and, quite frankly, dead on. getting together with close friends from your past is like going down the number line, you are leaving the present (another layer to add to the lyric "leave the presents all inside") and all other current distractions behind to escape into a time and place in the past, into a mindset and dynamic with close friends of yours from when you were young.
also, with the birthday context (which i love the "happy, happy"), are we really getting "older" with each passing year?
lastly, the ending song off this album joy, "twenty years later" is a perfect closing to this opening song on the album. i find that it was no mistake or coincidence that this was the beginning and "twenty years later" is the end, because, just like birth, we all "start out small."

Wilco – A Shot in the Arm Lyrics 14 years ago
I relate to this song as it is about the distorted/delusional perspective one can adapt in a relationship. The relationship can be with a person, a substance, a compulsive behavior, that seems to have lost its "touch," that you've lost/changed your passion for. I can say from personal experience that when people you were once so close to or in love with can change, and you seek some sort of quick fix to put off the final break up or fight that ends the relationship.

Favorite lines: "The ashtray says you were up all night." Up all night smoking cigarettes, alone, thinking.
and "We fell in love, in the key of C." Like someone said earlier. The key of C is natural, pure, basic, easy to "fall" into. The reference to the key of D though in the following stanza, I don't know, but then after that falling back into the "sea" (but sounds like "C." Great audio-trick!

I like how listless Tweedy sounds, like he's helpless about what to do with this "you" that once was what he/she/it doesn't want to be anymore. ...
I hope I'm not too vague.

backy , I like your thoughts on this song. To be able to write about such weird sexual encounters with such minimalist imagery and put it to music takes a very poetic and certain person.
To add to some interpretation: I think the refrain, "Basic space, open air / Don't look away, when there's nothing there" is very explicative of the nature of this primarily physical/sexual relationship. Sex is something basic, something that is part of life. It's at the bottom of Maslow's hierarchy of needs, with food and shelter, anyway. It's skin-deep, supposed to be nothing more. But, at the same time, it is highly expressive for feelings or desires that cannot be expressed otherwise. It's simple and complicated at the same time. In this relationship in the song, there is "nothing" there, no substance, no love, so why look away/not make eye contact? The slight frustration expressed in this song is baffling.

This song is great! It's a mockery of the roadtrip/cross-country concert tour and getting with groupies and just having [promiscuous, yes] fun. It makes me think of Penny Lane in "Almost Famous." She says, "I always tell the girls, never take it seriously. If you never take it seriously, you never get hurt. If you never get hurt, you always have fun."

Regina Spektor – Edit Lyrics 14 years ago
While I see the drug references and the cryptic meanings of the Doctor Robert/Uncle Albert allusions, I'm going with writing and suffering for an art or piece you're trying to create as the primary meaning of this song. Regina is calling out those who think the stuff they create is just masterpieces, every time, but really, for something to be truly a masterpiece, it requires a lot of effort, editing, revising, throwing out, starting over, etc. As a "writer" (or trying to be), I've come to accept that I have to have thousands of shitty first drafts before I can have something halfway decent. I'll admit it, I can write, but editing? Still working on that...

Wilco – Heavy Metal Drummer Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is like a quick snapshot into adolescence, especially going to see bands that may or may not have been making good music, but you and your friends worship these bands nonetheless. The music could be mediocre, but the way you liked the music then, the way it was being played then, the way you were dancing then, are all very dear memories that may have been "air-brushed" over time to be made out as better than they actually were. Like when an event may have been somewhat boring in your life, but years later when you think about it or talk about it with old friends, you make this event out to be such an important milestone in your life. Air-brushing and taking the past out of the garbage, brushing it off, and then placing it as a fixture on your fireplace mantel. Isn't that the best part of saying "oh, THOSE were the days" with a reminiscent smile on your face?

Wilco – Wishful Thinking Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is what I like to call a "sleeper." Really, what would we be without wishful thinking? In the relationships or friendships we start (or even ones we've had for a really long time), we oftentimes can't phase out the platonic view we have of the other person, this fleeting wish that they are in reality what we imagine them to be. We think that if what we expected or wished was reality, we would be able to love and be loved. Some of us are really lucky and what we expect/wish for is reality, and others work all of their life laboring to close the gap between expectations/hopes and reality.

I like how Jeff wrote this song, "WHAT would we be without wishful thinking," as opposed to "who." I think it objectifies humans and makes them a little less, well, flawed and imperfect. Maybe I'm off there, but I think there is some significance in using "what" instead of "who [would we be without wishful thinking]."
