Switchfoot – Dare You To Move Lyrics 8 years ago
This song, as indicated by the title: "Dare You To Move", is first and foremost advice - someone telling you something you should do for some reason innate to the person saying it. In this case the advice is to fluctuate with what is happening around you.

Like the first couple lyrics state, we do live with people, and we can infer from some of the later lyrics, "The tension is here/Between who you are and who you could be/Between how it is and how it should be, yeah", that we really can't avoid these influences, we can only "move" or as I would say it "respond" in the best way possible. I get that last point from the lyrics at the end of the song, disregarding the point that the adviser advises that we should disregard all the points refuting the reasons to do your best - "like today never happened", but the lyrics after that, "like today never happened before", as if this is your first and only chance to make things right with yourself.

I really like this song. It reminds me of the first time i did what the lyrics advise. I started writing like myself, improved my memorization skills, and even got laid with a hot chick. I don't really know why, it might be just that - doing what you think you should do with no prior reasoning - just doing it - can really give you that lead above the competition - Inspiration even.

Zedd – Find You Lyrics 8 years ago
Make them dance/Just like you/Cause you make me move/Yeah you always make me go

I believe the song is about sympatico, or truly known communication. "Just like you" is a line that supports that because "they (them)" are "just like you" suggesting a strong element of compassion - a type of communication. "Cause you make me move" probably suggests an emotional response to "you".

Stereos – Throw Ya Hands Up Lyrics 8 years ago
"Throw your hands up, put 'em in the air" is a pun, the lyric suggests the singer is putting people under arrest, as if he were a police officer. This state, being under arrest, is what happens to listeners when listeners cannot understand the message of the song, so I believe the song is about celebration.

The Killers – All These Things That I've Done Lyrics 8 years ago
I believe this song is about doing the right thing with all these things that have been done - I personally have a wealth of life experience, and I believe this song is telling me to do right in accordance with what I know about my life experience. I believe this song is severely flawed from healthy perfection, because no matter what, you are the same person as you are perfect. Where I think this song makes a point is in that a life experience can drastically change your attitude toward a certain situation or person, e.g. but on the contrary, i do not believe this SHOULD change your attitude towards these abstract people and situations. I believe you are not some arbitrary, meaningless thing floating around a pinball table, I believe youre a real entity that always has the same goals and opinions. So, what i'm saying is, despite what has happened to you, you're family home should always mean the same to you.

on to the analysis.

When there's nowhere else to run
Is there room for one more son
One more son
If you can hold on
If you can hold on, hold on
I want to stand up, I want to let go
You know, you know, no you don't, you don't
I want to shine on in the hearts of men
I want a meaning from the back of my broken hand

He's basically saying that experience leads us to our understanding of the world, or, moreover, that he wants his experience to lead him to his understanding of the world. I'm not sure he believes it does, in fact, i'm sure he's trying to convince himself that his shitty past has become worthwhile for stuff like decision making, but he doesn't believe it.

The Decemberists – We Both Go Down Together Lyrics 8 years ago
I believe this song is about being together with someone and all the consideration one must put into that. The lyrics start with a reference to seeing cliffs, a spectacular symbol because when you meet the right person, its like falling off a cliff~. The next stanza is about two people. The first half is about, presumably a woman, a woman who has it rough, i expect this is an argument stating that people effect one another, but thats a bit shaky. But the juxtaposition of these first two lines against the next two lines definitely denotes a connection. How else would the two lines work together? In the chorus, the first word is "And", which generally describes the connection between two things. The next word is "Oh" which is an exclamation meaning "Received". Then, there are two "my love", another juxtaposition of two people for one another.

All in all I believe this song is about the connection two people feel when together.

Calvin Harris – Feel So Close Lyrics 8 years ago
I feel so close to you right now, it's a force field.
I wear my heart upon my sleeve, like a big deal.
Your love pours down on me surround me like a waterfall.
And there's no stopping us right now, I feel so close to you right now.

The song is about being connected to a person - "I feel so close to YOU right now". The song is also about strength in numbers "...close to you.../it's a force field" - kinda about how if you know someone you can have the strength of being right for them, by doing right by them. Doing right by people makes some people feel great, like they can actually do something to make the world a better place. "I wear my heart upon my sleeve, like a big deal" is straight up an advertisement to people who want to be a big deal (to people) for connection - If you want to be a big deal, you gotta wear your heart on your sleeve and feel the moments you have with people ... "I feel so close to you right now..." etc,

Nada Surf – Armies Walk Lyrics 8 years ago
i was about to change/but you stayed the same/had pinned against the wall/that we are preordained /if they gave you extra scenes/you'd hit back to main

This verse is fairly simple. The narrator is expecting he will change, but someone else refuses to, making his job of change difficult probably because we depend on each other's existence.

gonna disappear by train/cut my signal chain/find a stable girl/and fill it up again/you can't foresee intent/when the writer writes all bent/armies walk inside/armies walk physically
This verse is an extrapolation on the first verse, and this includes how he will change despite the existence of someone who refuses to. The narrator also includes why he feels the need to change - "you can't forsee intent/when the writer writes all bent" - He did something wrong, according to himself, and he has chosen to rectify the situation - "armies walk inside/armies walk physically". These two lines also develops the first stanza by reporting that his actions to change are public - "armies walk physically" - and they will result in changes in existence.

every day i steal a car/that's how hard it is/to go from where you are

This stanza describes the difficulty of his situation as it is. "every day I steal a car...to go from where you are" - repeating the topic of stature of relationships - how people hold you the way they think you are. But he's also saying he does the work to change himself, ergo change peoples opinion of him.

[repetition of verse 2] ... /we'd like you to leave/coz we've gotta breathe

This expansion describes his appetite for freedom, or at least his appetite for breath. The narrator believes he'd be free, or could at the very least "breathe" if the other person or people he's talking about left him alone.

who's to say/why we're built so strange/disappointing ourselves/before we change?/grass is greener right over here/why do simple things/take so many years?

This verse pisses me off, I guess the entire song pisses me off, though its an important and useful lesson. The narrator is essentially blaming not only himself, but everyone for the strange build of "us" (we) - blaming everyone for "disappointment" when what we want is clear to us - "before we change/grass is greener right over here" - He knows what he wants, at the very least. And to finish it off, "Why do simple things/take so many years" describes once again that there has been a distance between what he wants and what is true.

Honestly, I'd take it as advice... Don't fuck up your life doing or presenting yourself in a way that you don't want to be because other people will recognize it and if you ever want to be the way you want to be, you'll have to cut ties or convince them you've changed.

This is about a man who witnesses fraudulence. He says the woman in the first verse is a liar - Her life is a falsehood: her green watering can is plastic, -She has grown into it: she waters her fake plant with a fake watering can, and even her reality is not real: In the fake plastic earth.

Her green plastic watering can for
her fake Chinese rubber plant
In the fake plastic earth

She is fake, she adds to fake, and she doesn't know reality anymore.

Radiohead – Like Spinning Plates Lyrics 8 years ago
Interpreted as the meaning of life, this song is very interesting.

Life is like a balancing act. All the time. This is where the metaphor connecting the balancing of spinning plates on a stick is apparent. We have to balance stuff like exercise, healthy eating practices, and even the ideas we use to perceive the world.

Where this song is most interesting to me is in New Jersey... jk... Not only do we need to keep spinning the plates at the right speed to keep them upright, but we also must move in fluctuation with the sticks to keep the sticks vertical. To me, thats kinda like changing, moving to keep the spinning plates just that, spinning.

So according to the last verse:
And this just feels like spinning plates
I'm living in cloud cuckoo land
And this just feels like spinning plates
My body's floating down the muddy river

I have ideas on the go, which i have to use and protect, not to mention change because of them.

Coldplay – The Scientist Lyrics 8 years ago
Come up to meet you
Tell you I'm sorry
You don't know how lovely you are
I had to find you
Tell you I need you
Tell you I set you apart

Tell me your secrets
And ask me your questions
Oh let's go back to the start
Running in circles; coming up tails
Heads on a science apart

Nobody said it was easy
It's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be this hard
Oh take me back to the start

I was just guessing at numbers and figures
Pulling your puzzles apart
Questions of science; science and progress
Do not speak as loud as my heart

Tell me you love me
Come back and haunt me
Oh and I rush to the start
Running in circles, chasing our tails
Coming back as we are

Nobody said it was easy
Oh it's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be so hard
I'm going back to the start

Oh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
X4

first verse - the narrator (henceforth described as "he") meets a woman, and it is apparently in a very rough time, because the story goes "(I) tell you I'm sorry". I assume it is in a bad time, and not a problem with him, because he has only recently met the person. But perhaps he has some faults that he wishes to appologize for upfront. Because he is saying this I assume he is either guilty of something, or everyone is guilty of something... either way i'm tacit. again, it is obvious this relationship has just begun because he says "you don't know how lovely you are". apparently i've got some stuff to say to people I haven't really talked to before. The next lyric is "I had to find you". a common misconception of this wording would suggest he needed to find her. but really it means he had enough to find her. (off the topic before, because it was horrible, we now know I am able in some wierd way.) The next lyric (apparently i'm not too confident) is "Tell you I need you". Apparently he wants her to know he needs her. he want her to know he needs her... I wonder what that means... I think he wants the relationship to be consentual and-- he says he needs her. (hooray for me?). "Tell you I set you apart" suggests, because he wants her, that the world is bad apart from her- he likes her for some lovely reason. (for some ******* reason I have to do something). Therefore, overall, this stanza suggests a man is exhilarated by a extraordinary woman. OK I find myself bored.

Bright Eyes – Lua Lyrics 9 years ago
"You can count on me to split"
the protagonist of this story is known to leave loves- his heavy and hardrued song are exemplary of his leaving.

His voice sounds weakened- it trembles and is soft- saying "...but i think we have to walk" connoting that he is stuck with what he's got, not only because his voice is so weak and tired playing with a D chord and an E chord, but also because of what he says- "...we have to..."

He's ultimately lonely in his realizations - "I get a coffee and the paper have my own conversations". To me, coffee is about marxism... having drunk coffee, he becomes a different speed and the paper, hence the coffee, takes on a personal meaning, a meaning all by itself.

"And I know you have a heavy heart, I can feel it when we kiss"
I believe it takes one to know one. His life suggests that it is a heavy kiss, he knows it so he feels it.

"The love I sell you in the evening, by the morning won't exist" ... "...by the morning..." To me, this kinda suggests we're ultimately by ourself.

He's dating a bulimic - "You just keep going to the bathroom, always say you'll be right back"

"whats so simple in the moonlight by the morning never is."

Amy Millan – Headsfull Lyrics 12 years ago
Blue is a musical term refering to certain notes in a musical scale. These notes are charcerterized by relativism and worry.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_note

In this song she hits a blue chord when she says "a deeper blue" and in this context i believe it conveys a feeling of self-deprication. (but the feeling is personal).

I believe this song is about memories (or sentiment) building up over time and wearing you down, resulting in a deteriorated life quality. As you can hear in the song, the piece starts off energetic and capricious, but then leads into a upsetting melody, which progresses further into upsetting chords and melody.

The song is written in first person, so we can assume that everything that Amy sings relates to the person. In my construct, the protagonist (be her an anti-hero) is an alcoholic who had a lot of fun for a while, but is worried about her future.

Belle & Sebastian – Another Sunny Day Lyrics 14 years ago
Theres something in my eye, a little midge so beguiling
Sacrificed his life to bring us both eye to eye
I heard the Eskimos remove obstructions with tongues, dear
You missed my eye, I wonder why I didnt complain
You missed my eye, I wonder why, please do it again

I think that this little midge in the eye refers to a literal midge in eye and the believed lie both parties of a beginning relationship share. A midge, when in the eye, is a visual lie. The midge in the eye is the thing in the eye that brings way too many people together; that is the thing which will "bring us both eye to eye". Ex. "you've got something in your eye" (lean in and kiss). This makes sense because then the opposite member of the beginning relationship will literally miss the eye with the eskimo tongue.
"You missed my eye, I wonder why I didnt complain
You missed my eye, I wonder why, please do it again"
He doesnt complain cause its a kiss, and he asks her to do it again. This, however, does not remove the midge in each partie's perspectives of the other.

"Chocolate on the boil" refers to the pleasurable qualities of another being amplified before being overheated and ruined. At the point of the song "obstructions with tongues, dear" the chocolate has been boiled and ruined.

Expand on my analysis because you know I'm wrong.

Grizzly Bear – While You Wait for the Others Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is beautiful, let me start with that.

I believe that this song is about the feeling of perceptual affirmation. What i mean by perceptual affirmation is: proof that what you believe is correct. Notice how the song moves from extreme dissonance to consonance? that is the sound of the narrator's beliefs being affirmed.

"While you wait on the answers that I’ll pretend to find
Keeping up with the motions still occupies our time
You could hope for some substance as long as you like"

"The answers that I'll pretend to find" are just inferred connections that the narrator makes.
The motions occupy time. motion always occupies time, and the narrator knows this. The "Other" is one who refuses to infer answers for themselves even with all the motion they have necessarily experienced.

I hope I convinced you. get it?

yeah something about that float on deal makes me feel pretty good too.

I think this song is about: forgetting about what is actually going around oneself because of a preoccupation with some kind of future "good". "Good", of course, is defined by oneself, but when everything is ok or everything is "all right already", there can't really be any good.

floating is fun, but anyone who's taken a ride on the lazy river knows that you should be getting antsy before it's over.
