Anthony actually explains the meaning behid this song in his autobiography, by the same name(Scar tissue).....essentially, the lyrics describe in a literal sense, an encounter he had with a teenage runaway one night in a bathroom stall backstage after a concert performance. Basically, this girl came on to him. She was very yougn and a virgin....hence the "blood lost in a bathroom stall"...it was in reference both to him shooting heroin, as well as her losing her virginity to him. He mentioned in the book how he felt extremely guilty for taking her virginity like that, given her age and the fact that she was a runaway. He was expressing a sort of affection for her. This was common for him, as he is actually quite an emotional person. In addition to this actual event that took place, the song has a simultaneous deeper meaning about love and loneliness. He is reflecting back on hos life and all tbe various hardships he has endured. In essence, he is telling the story of his life, admitting that he csn not hide his emotiinal wounds(scar tissue) from the world. Most men, for fear of appearing weak, attempt to conceal their emotional side. In writing this dong, Kedis is saying that he wishes people knew how painful it can be to live this life, especially the life of a rock star in the limelight, aleays doing whatever it takes just to get by. This is certainly one of my favorite rhcp songs, not only for it's sad, melodic overtones, but simply becsuse it encspsulates the true essence of what the band is all about. |

To me, this song is a both a poignant reflection on youth, as well as a sudden realization that time is fleeting, and therefore must be treasured. It speaks to the sanctity of the present moment, espousing the power of each and every passing moment of our lives. Essentially, the song encourages us to live completely in the moment, and to realize the beauty/power each moment holds. Time is to be treasured, as is youth. It also mentions how each moment of our lives forever shapes our destiny, altering the trajectory each of us takes. We leave a part of us through time every moment we love and make choice . The song says that we are never the same after each moment passes, forever altered and chained by the weight of time. It's simply a beautiful song. Hands down one of the best. |

I think what i like about this song is for its use of metaphors to add extra meaning. It's possible that this song has more than one meaning. This is my take on it though: I think this man is clearly depressed over a breakup with his girlfriend. My guess is, deep down he's very immature. That is probably why she broke up with him. This tore him up inside and sank him into a deep depression. In the beginning, when he says he is "coming out of my cage", i think that refers to his depressive episode. Most likely, he shut himself off to women and the world as a result of the breakup. Now he is finally trying to get out and live again. He's trying to meet other women and move on with his life. But every time he tries, he keeps thinking about his ex with other men. This jealousy is all in his head and unfounded, since they aren't together anymore. He realizes that it's unhealthy to keep playing it over in his head, but he can't seem to help himself. Most likely he is an extremely sensitive person and can't deal with this rejection. When he says " Now i'm going to bed and my stomach is sick" I think it is making him physically sick just thinking about her every night when he goes to sleep. He knows that she has moved on with her life and that he needs to do the same. Going back to the first verse, when he says " Gotta gotta be down, because i want it all"..I think this means that he can't ever be truly happy because he is an all or nothing person. He is either extremely happy, or sad...This is why i think he probably suffers from bi polar disorder...He goes to extremes I think the last verse sums up his frustrations at not being ale to get past this. He beats himself up over the fact that his ex seems to be able to get over him so easily, while he is still completely miserable.....When he says " I never" four times....i think that is his way of saying to himself that he just can't win...sort of like saying his life is a catch 22. Nomatter what he does, it ends up in failure.... Anyways, i love this song. It has great depth and meaning...I can relate to alot of how the writer feels....I wish there were more songs like this today. |
