Neil Young – One Of These Days Lyrics | 14 years ago |
another perfect meditation on love and nature from neil. that's pretty much the theme of harvest moon. which i would call his most spiritual album easily. though i have to say that these songs played much better live. |
Elvis Costello – Oliver's Army Lyrics | 14 years ago |
i love the juxtaposition of personal and political. other than neil, costello is kind of the master of that. |
Neil Young – Broken Arrow Lyrics | 14 years ago |
this is just one of those songs that lives in a time that we are not in. we had to be in the moment to define it. but we aren't. so just enjoy the emotion it portrays. |
Tom Waits – Day After Tomorrow Lyrics | 14 years ago |
this is a song that represents a chance for people to act in an absurdly separatist manner. i think of this song in a way that makes tom into a vessel. he has been struck with the power of insight into the life of a weary soldier who is expressing emotion that none of us can understand. |
They Might Be Giants – Put Your Hand Inside The Puppet Head Lyrics | 14 years ago |
these guys are fuckin insane. literal interpretation is useless. just lay back and welcome the chaos in. |
They Might Be Giants – Put Your Hand Inside The Puppet Head Lyrics | 14 years ago |
these guys are fuckin insane. literal interpretation is useless. just lay back and welcome the chaos in. |
Neil Young – Expecting to Fly Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Nobody comments on this fuckin' song?! SERIOUSLY?! what the hell. it's beauty. apparently it's about some chick he was with and he saw that she was with some other guy. |
Neil Young – Crime In The City Lyrics | 14 years ago |
the penultimate take of this song was the acoustic solo take from jones beach. freedom tour june 89' |
No Doubt – Sunday Morning Lyrics | 14 years ago |
this song is a fucking pop masterpiece. |
Wilco – Bob Dylan's 49th Beard Lyrics | 14 years ago |
yeah augurus. fuckin' spot on. |
The Velvet Underground – Sunday Morning Lyrics | 14 years ago |
it is a song with a tone of regret and sadness. but uplifting at the same time. i didn't know the vu could really write that way. |
Norah Jones – Chasing Pirates Lyrics | 14 years ago |
it's light airy and perfectly pleasant. one of those songs that takes your mind off your problems for the amount of time that it's on and maybe just a little more. the lyrics don't mean much. chasing pirates is a metaphor for sleep i'm thinking. |
Tears for Fears – Everybody Wants to Rule the World Lyrics | 14 years ago |
a song for it's decade. "i can't stand this indecision/married with a lack of vision" remind you of any particular time? |
Buffalo Springfield – On The Way Home Lyrics | 14 years ago |
i always heard it was a kiss-off to the buffalo springfield. and stephen stills in particular. very emotionally powered song. classic. |
Johnny Cash – The Man Comes Around Lyrics | 14 years ago |
i love it how whenever a songwriter writes a powerful pro-Christianity song all the atheists try to dissect it and say it's not really about god. meaning of song: pay your dues. or god's gonna cut you down. i'm not agreeing or disagreeing. but i'm fairly sure that that is the main point he was going for. |
Modest Mouse – Perpetual Motion Machine Lyrics | 14 years ago |
isaac brock is one of the newest most confounding young songwriters i've heard since stephen malkmus. and far more bleak. you could say he was malkmus's bleakly despairing younger brother or something. i love his ability for writing bumper slogan like lyrics. "we all try harder as the days run out" is him in his usual despondency. but there's a new tone he's going for. a harsh beauty that lies beneath his mean words. i get the pixies reference it works with the whole nautical sea theme he's going for. very clever. i just wish he would open his world view a bit. he could become truly beautiful then. |
The Beta Band – Needles In My Eyes Lyrics | 14 years ago |
great song. heard it at the end of an episode of house. radiohead-ish. but still beautiful. |
Neil Young – Winterlong Lyrics | 14 years ago |
the lyrics are a genre exercise. it sounds like he was trying to write a sort-of brian wilson type thing. it may be about coke. maybe about a woman. if it's about the drug then "you seem to be where i belong" is one of the most bummer-iffic lyrics young has ever penned. did i forget to say that it doesn't matter because the song is heart-achingly beautiful? |
Autolux – Asleep At The Trigger Lyrics | 14 years ago |
the lyrics by themselves are hard to consider. but this song is beautiful beyond description. |
Neil Young – Pocahontas Lyrics | 14 years ago |
this basically fits in with the theme of the rest of the album. an all encompassing vision of america. filled with blood terror, sadness, humor, and wisdom. neil basically proved he was the greatest living songwriter with that album. and this is one of the key tracks. |
Beck – Dark Star Lyrics | 14 years ago |
to me it sounds like the universe being sucked through a hole in the sky. quite possibly the most bleak despairing and hell-like anti-war song ever written. |
Devo – Beautiful World Lyrics | 14 years ago |
one of the most bitterly ironic commentaries on the excess and self indulgence of the 1980's i've ever heard |
Neil Young – A Dream That Can Last Lyrics | 14 years ago |
he seems to be speaking of some sort of concept of heaven. it's a very spiritual song to be sure. it ends the bleak "sleeps with angels" on a note of ephemeral beauty. one of the best ends he's ever done. if you ask me. |
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Mystery Girl Lyrics | 14 years ago |
it's "hit hard like a barracuda" but hip hop would fit too. i love the fuckin' yeah yeah yeahs. |
Tom Waits – Hoist That Rag Lyrics | 14 years ago |
tom waits has a way of making protest, personal and political at the same time. i'm not very good at talking about the political aspect of his songwriting. but if this song wasn't so deeply felt and performed then it wouldn't mean diddly. my favorite lyric? all of them |
A Place To Bury Strangers – Ocean Lyrics | 14 years ago |
definitely fuckin jesus and mary chain influenced. it's pretty cool though. |
No Age – You're A Target Lyrics | 14 years ago |
well it was the radio you get when you get digital cable. not quite as good as satellite radio. but i've done some follow up on them. they are awesome. i hope rocknroll sounds make a resurgence soon. these guys are a good shot at it. |
Neil Young – LA Lyrics | 14 years ago |
you cannot spell alienation without Neil. |
Neil Young – Stringman Lyrics | 14 years ago |
a beautiful ballad written for jack Nietzsche during the dissolving of his marriage. written in about 1976. the performance on unplugged is awesome. |
Tom Waits – Bottom of the World Lyrics | 14 years ago |
this is just how you feel after a long period of being in a transient state. when you feel like you don't have any roots you have moments like some of the lyrics in here. balancing a diamond on a blade of grass...you start to see beauty everywhere. even if your future is bleak..especially actually. beck wrote a lot of songs like this. this reminds of stuff like "hollow log" and "modesto" two artists that seem very akin to me. and very personal to me as well. |
Tom Waits – Top of the Hill Lyrics | 14 years ago |
i think this song is about the end of the world. need your differential plenty of oil/you load the wagon til' the end of the world. top of the hill is a metaphor for some sort-of ironic devilish joke we don't get. it's not him dying. it's all of us. and given the political tone of the rest of the album. it's more likely he's speaking in a sociopolitical way, rather then in a more personal sense. just my opinion. |
Neil Young – Sixty To Zero Lyrics | 14 years ago |
a humorous,terrifying,despairing,joyous screed on american life. |
Beck – Burning Boyfriend (Axe Ex) Lyrics | 14 years ago |
classic beck fear. i think it was about some asshole who was dating his ex. trying to act like a person. rock on beck |
Beck – Elevator Music Lyrics | 14 years ago |
the information is laughing at us. a pretty war album from the depths of nowhere. while we lie out of our teeth. the hair on the back of our hands betray our true nature. beck is singing about all these platitudes. being fresh is nothing new for him. he just wants to get some beans for his burrito can you fault him for that? |
The Jesus and Mary Chain – Just Like Honey Lyrics | 14 years ago |
this is not about oral sex. i don't know what the hell it's about. but it's not that. |
Beck – Brother Lyrics | 14 years ago |
this song disturbed me the first time i heard it. i didn't really know beck was capable of that kinda sadness. he really is a great songwriter. |
Neil Young – Fork In The Road Lyrics | 14 years ago |
brilliant new song. rollicking shakey-like rocknroll!. we're bringing on the decade. and here comes neil with his new end of the century statement. sounds a hell of a lot fresher than silver and gold did... |
No Age – You're A Target Lyrics | 14 years ago |
a beautiful fucking song. just heard it on satellite radio. i hope punk comes back and is like this. raw energetic and beautiful. |
Buzzcocks – Thunder of Hearts Lyrics | 14 years ago |
somebody comment on this awesome song. please. |
Beck – Loser Lyrics | 14 years ago |
look at me. my songs make no sense because nothing around me does. that's what loser is about. an embrace of truth in absurdity. |
Neil Young – Everybody's Alone Lyrics | 14 years ago |
man this could have been a great single. oh well. the song kicks ass. love that guitar solo. |
Tom Waits – I Don't Wanna Grow Up Lyrics | 14 years ago |
i'm living this song as we speak. the 5 o'clock news is always a drag. helpless against time's pull we turn to music to comfort our sorrows. tom is like a heaping glass of smooth whiskey. |
Soul Coughing – Soundtrack To Mary Lyrics | 14 years ago |
good to finally see the lyrics to a song i've been listening to for ten years. just another love song. but one that actually talks about the people in love. |
Soul Coughing – Screenwriter's Blues Lyrics | 14 years ago |
just an all out defecation and trash-out of some of the stupid shit that l.a is known for. rock on M. Doughty. too bad you couldn't stay this good as a solo artist. |
Daniel Johnston – Foxy Girl Lyrics | 14 years ago |
this is a really really good song. and i don't even care that much for johnston. i think people have covered him better than he does his own songs. i understand he's overwhelmed by despair. but man can't you focus that into performing your songs? |
Neil Young – Look Out for My Love Lyrics | 14 years ago |
a paranoid tripped out love song. or is it a love song? i really don't know. randy newman loves it. |
Beck – Sucker Without A Brain Lyrics | 14 years ago |
what a hilarious song. beck has a wonderful sense of humor. he would probably write a great movie if he chose to. |
The Flaming Lips – Enthusiasm for Life Defeats Existential Fear Lyrics | 14 years ago |
a little bit of brilliance. it segues beautifully into the beach boys god only knows if you play the beginning over the train station sound effects. |
Neil Young – Captain Kennedy Lyrics | 14 years ago |
a lonesome soldier on his way to war. always kinda reminds me of the opening scene to saving private Ryan. when they were riding the boats to storm on Normandy. |
Neil Young – Barstool Blues Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"if god we're to ask me for a definition of beauty i would play him barstool blues" jimmy mcdonough |
