Oh my god, the chorus was bugging me so much 'cause it didn't really sound like "We can KILL them if we try" or "blame" or "cure", but I figured it out. He sings:
'Don't need this system
We can CLAIM it if we try
Shoot up everything we see'...
I am positive that's what he says, you can clearly hear a "CLAI-" sound at that word. :)

Although I think this is probably true to Gerard's more nihilistic thoughts so it's personal in that way, it does sound like a kind of trigger-happy, yay!exterminate! theme song for the Killjoys, and it's clearly anti-corporation aka anti-Better Living Industries :) |

Kind of a Jesus & Mary Chain-like rhythm, reminds me of 'Reverence'.
I think this song is about suicide. Girl makes a sorrowful, difficult decision to 'sever ties', goes to a 'high point', jumps, and 'away, away' she goes into the 'cold current'. She wants to go on her own terms ('before they push/pull you under'). The 'there would be tears, flowers, long shadows/she could see it now' is probably referring to her thinking about what her funeral would be like. Just my thoughts anyways. |

- I hear pale horse green eyes too, but I think he means "horse-green" eyes... whatever colour that is, haha

Holy shit, does no one else hear the uncanny resemblance between the first main riff of this song and the main riff on 'Dark Entries' by Bauhaus? I'm a big fan of Hole, but I almost have to say that this song rips off that riff. Could be unintentional though, 'cause it's pretty fucking simple riff, just descending power chords. |

To be honest, I think it is probably a religious song judging by Brandon's religious theme that runs throughout this whole album, and by the choir that comes in the song, sounding like a church choir, but I think this is one that can be read quite secularly and that anyone can relate to it. There are no explicit references to God or praying or religious allusions--everyone has moments of reflection and remorse in their lives, everyone finds themselves begging on their knees at some point in their lives, so it can be almost about any crisis in your life really.
Possibly my fave on the album, because it's more open-ended lyrically than the others, and because of the obvious U2 influence on it. |

I know this is said a lot about many Manics songs, but I really do think this one is about Richey. It just all seems to fit.
First verse: 'Crushed any happiness you knew'--'knew' being the key word, Richey became more and more depressed with age, longing for his childhood when he knew untainted happiness; the tree could be referring to the cherry blossom tree outside the place Richey & Nicky shared that has come to kind of represent Richey; and how the tree 'gave more to you than love' could refer to Richey's rejection of the idea of love and his struggle with finding any meaningful relationship.
Chorus: describes Richey's perpetual loneliness in 'all alone forever'; suggests the memory of someone who's passed away, but still 'conclusions' are 'foregone'--a satisfying conclusion has never been reached regarding Richey's disappearance.
Second verse: referring to Richey's choice to end the life as he knew it; 'some peace at last so don't be sad'--could be talking to himself (Nicky, I mean, being the lyricist) or to fans, saying reassuringly that while Richey might be gone, at least he is at peace.
Third verse: 'Your future glories all empty of thoughts'--because he's gone, he cannot achieve any more of the glory he had in the limelight; 'There's beauty doing nothing at all/It's what you wanted, it's what you got/Your final search for truth has stopped'--again referring to Richey's decision to either disappear or commit suicide.
Anyways, could be off the mark here, but that's just my take on it. Maybe the kind of gospel choir in this one is supposed to give it a spiritual feel to suit these (in my opinion) bereaved lyrics. |

I think it's all correct except for the line that's written out "I'd come in, offer you". That's not right, I am almost positive it's "I'd cut off an ear for you" (you know, like Van Gogh infamously did for a prostitute he was in love with). That's why right after he sings "You think I'm weird, but it's true". :) |

And Thom is not singing "Radiate his light", if you listen closely you can tell that he's in fact singing "Radiate his lie". This fits much better with the rest of the lyrics, which tell a subtle, anti-religious message. |

Radiohead doesn't mention God or Jesus in their songs 'cause they're not religious or pro-religious. Period. Much of their lyrical content espouses a sort of existentialism, which is an atheistic philosophy, definitely not a religious one. I'd like to know which lyrics of Radiohead's are explicitly "pro-Christian", I'm sure there are none. |

I really like the idea of him singing "Daddy hurts me", it works so well, but unfortunately I just listened really closely to the line and it really sounds like "use", not "hurts". And actually on second extra-close listen, I can't tell if it's "Darling" or "Daddy", so it could very well be "Daddy, use me", which fits your interpretation still :) |

Few things to say to you:
1. Just because you think you are right, does not mean that we are all wrong. Yours is a valid interpretation, and one that does work in its own way, but that doesn't mean that you are the one with the one and only answer. I for one disagree with you, and I think your interpretation ignores some of the imagery in the song, but I'm not saying you're wrong. Only Brandon knows for sure what the song's about.
2. Just because the video shows a chick doesn't mean that this can't possibly have a gay meaning. There are plenty of videos out there that don't match the song meaning, Killers videos included. Do you think 'Bones' is actually about two skeletons in love, or that 'All These Things That I've Done' is a Western about badass babes chasing down the band, just because those are the video concepts? Of course not.
3. I resent that you group cheating and "gay stuff" together as "inappropriate relationships". There is absolutely nothing inappropriate or wrong about being gay, so please don't spread immoral or offensive messages like that.
Oh, and yes Brandon is religious and spiritual, but is not "very" religious or "very conservative" either. From what I've read he's pretty open-minded and liberal about many things, he supports Obama, etc. so I wouldn't jump to conclusions about that. Sorry, had to get that off my chest... |

Okay, so while I agree that it's obviously about an affair, I believe it's about a homosexual affair rather than a heterosexual one. Now I'm not saying that Brandon is gay (or bi), but he has written songs that sound like they're from a gay perspective before, so that could be what he's doing here. I jumped to this interpretation because of 2 things: the way the subjects are kept gender neutral, and the 'caught between the crossfire of heaven & hell' & 'the devil' lines, which make more sense if the relationship was gay, since most people wildly believe that if you're gay then you're going to hell, while pretty much no one anymore believes that cheaters go to hell (because probably more than half the population has cheated on someone sometime).
Anyways, I might as well mention this too, the 'fiery arrows' kinda sounds like phallic imagery if you're reading the lyrics with this interpretation in a gay context, plus arrows have always been associated with gay imagery because of St. Sebastian... |

'The past sideways crawl' = This line is really poignant to me because it reminds me directly of Richey's line in Die in the Summertime: 'I have crawled so far sideways / I recognize dim traces of creation'. I wonder if they're both homaging a famous line of some poet or someone or just both shared a similar metaphorical image... Like peas in a pod, Nicky & Richey. :) |

Maybe the ghosts are like, ghosts of your past, like painful memories that you lock inside yourself? Hence, 'a soul in pain', and 'ghosts we kept within'. When you come to terms with these 'ghosts' and break free of them ('break free from inside'/'set free'), you become enlightened about your true self ('untie our blindfolded eyes'/'all will be revealed') and can finally begin to live with grace, to deal with the pain that haunts you with grace & dignity ('So when the ghosts find you, be careful but be graceful'). The 'Build bridges and not roads/Make love make hate not war' stanza probably just refers to future relationships, or a new way to live your life now that 'all [is] revealed'.
Or something like that, it's pretty vague. |

This has nothing to do with the song's actual meaning, but the first two verses really remind me of myself and my twin sister. It eerily fits with our lives: 'One day will be improved'--We're always talking about getting out of our shit town and getting famous together one day; 'We were the better kind / Two the same'--We're identical in almost every way, and we often put ourselves on a pedestal over others around us (not out of arrogance but out of contempt for the average idiot, for example, the average idiot who would not have even heard of Joy Division...); 'Fought for good, stood side by side / Our friendship never died'--We're both obsessed with morality and truth, and of course there is no way that either one of us would ever sever from the other; 'Our vision touched the skies'--Like I said, we plan on getting famous one day, which is our shared vision; & 'I always looked to you / I put my trust in you'--Pretty much wraps up the workings of a twin relationship! |

In case some people don't know who Alfred J. Prufrock is, he's the character in TS Eliot's famous poem 'The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock', a poem that exhibits melancholy sentiments and fears about the modern age, growing old, etc. that really suit these lyrics. This song is kinda hard to figure out the meaning of precisely, but it sounds like just another one about Nicky feeling insignificant in the grand scope of the universe and feeling depressed about this and about getting older too maybe.
"In my own little Guernica" -- I guess would translate to "my own little warzone", scene of chaotic and confused misery or despair or something. |

I completely identify with this song, I can't help tearing up when I listen to it, and it actually reminds me of the previous track on this album 'Tsunami'. I'm sure the Silent Twins felt this way in their older years, similar to how my twin sister and I feel now. |
