U2 – Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of Lyrics | 14 years ago |
The last two lines are so powerful: It's just a moment This time will pass Gives me chills whenever I hear it. |
U2 – So Cruel Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This is poetry at its finest. Amazing work by Bono. And if it is about Edge's divorce, can you imagine the emotion felt whenever he plays this? I'm sure he's a bit desensitized by now, but still. But more importantly, I think it shows the bond between The Edge and Bono....which is one of the reasons this band has lasted so long. This song gives me chills. |

Nasty, frigid bitch....love it! And, I too, am six years into a situation like this. Damn nasty, frigid bitches. Well done Keyser Sushi. |

Hopefully it didn't ruin your vision of the song in a negative way. I don't think the message is promotion of drug use or even glorifying it in any way. Just a very powerful message of addiction (which could be addiction to anything, really). |
U2 – One Tree Hill Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Yes, this is a song about a good friend of the band's, Greg Carroll. Greg belonged to an aborigine tribe called the Maori. This song was sung at his funeral and One Tree Hill is an actual place. Greg and Bono had a special bond and when Greg was killed it really devastated the band, particularly Bono. It also has a second meaning dealing with the Maori struggle to survive in New Zealand. There was constant fighting in which the Maori (sea faring people) were thrust in the middle. So the song goes..... We turn away to face the cold, enduring chill As the day begs the night for mercy love Great line as the symbolism of a sun rising casts it's light on all the destruction of war. Ironic that the sun, a symbol for life, is pleading to the night to "take it easy." The sun so bright, it leaves no shadows Only scars carved into stone on the face of earth The sun can't cast shadows on the dead. All it sees are tombstones (scars carved into stone). The moon is up and over One Tree Hill We see the sun go down in your eyes Again, the symbolism. One Tree Hill, the burial ground for the Maori....the night/moon (which by now is symbolic of death) is shown over One Tree Hill....as life is extinguished (sun goes down in your eyes). You run like a river, on like a sea You run like a river runs to the sea Could be a direct reference to the Maori running to the sea for protection. Mmmmm. And in the world, a heart of darkness, a fire zone Where poets speak their heart, then bleed for it Speak up against this revolution and you'll pay with your blood. Very powerful line. Jara sang, his song a weapon in the hands of love You know his blood still cries from the ground This reference is directed to Victor Jara who was a poet, a thespian, and teacher in Chile in the 70s. The giant contrast of the his music themes (love, peace, etc) and the way he was killed (machine gun fire) thrust Jara to a symbol representing the struggle for human rights. The next line is one of the most powerful in the song----his blood still cries from the ground. In Genesis we learn of the brothers Cain and Able and when God confronts Cain He says, "What have you done? Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground." A direct indication that brothers are killing brothers....not only in Jara's case but in the case of the Maori...and even perhaps in Carroll's death. It runs like a river, runs to the sea It runs like a river to the sea "It" could refer to the amount of bloodshed...the blood flowing like a river. I don't believe in painted roses or bleeding hearts While bullets rape the night of the merciful Painted Rose = something fake. Don't give me your fake problems while there is more injustice and atrocity happening around the world. It makes our issues seem trivial. I'll see you again when the stars fall from the sky And the moon has turned red over One Tree Hill Obvious reference to Judgement Day when he will see his friend again. We run like a river, run to the sea We run like a river to the sea And "we" can mean that our lives are like rivers. And like all rivers we end up in the same place...the sea. And as people we will all be together again at the End of Days. |

There's no way that 4:20 has any signifcance to this song. Total coincidence. I can't imagine something being THAT planned out. Unless, of course, it was some stupid gangsta rap group.....just sayin'..... |

Unless, of course, it was some stupid gangsta rap group.....just sayin'.....and I totally agree with the "media" theme. The media totally desensitizes us. Especially given the bands political savvy, we are totally controlled by the media. I think that sometimes we read too much into the lyrics...but then, I guess that's the beauty of poetry and song writing. |

Got to be total coincidence. I can't imagine something "THAT" planned out. Maybe if it were a song by some stupid gangsta rap group. ;) |
