Neutral Milk Hotel – April 8th Lyrics 11 years ago
Uh, you realize that this isn't the last track on the album, right? Pree Sisters is after it. Your track order might be messed up.

Okkervil River – On Tour with Zykos Lyrics 12 years ago
I don't think it's referring to the breakup of a long-term relationship. Rather, the scenario I'm seeing here is that this girl is obsessed with some musician, has a one night stand, and attributes more to the relationship than actually exists: She's in love with him, but ultimately she's a groupie and he's just going to move on to the next show.

The Dodos – God? Lyrics 12 years ago
I think it's more frustration than despair. The song seems to portray a person who has been told all his life that god is good and wonderful and loves everyone, then contemplates why such a god would create so much suffering. I really like the imagery in the fifth verse:

"You live above this great big sky
I hear it's nice, it's always spring
I've come to ask you for advice
I know you're busy for a king
You tell me once, I ask you twice
How long, how long, before they sing?
We did the things you said, alright
Oh no, oh no, oh God, where'd you go?"

He realizes prayer is a futile exercise, and that it seems rather selfish that god would sit in heaven all day while we suffer on earth.

He eventually loses his faith, realizing that the religion he has been led to believe was true all his life was in fact a lie, and he's left lost and confused: "oh no, oh no, oh God, where'd you go?"

I see it as a criticism of the concept of God, talking about the inherent contradiction of an omnipotent deity, and an expression of the resulting frustration.

The Dodos – Paint the Rust Lyrics 12 years ago
As I see it, this song's about imperialism:

"They come to seek the open land
They grab a piece before others do"

People from European countries rush to places like Africa, Indonesia, and the Americas, competing to grab land.

"Please, tell us what you want, we'll get it for you"

Seems to lead to the whole "white man's burden" idea - In the conquerors' eyes, they're bringing new ideas and technologies to what they see as inferior societies.

Then there's the whole "paint the rust" idea: taking something that seems dirty and throwing a paint of coat on it.

It's not perfect and there's obviously other stuff there but it's worth thinking about.

Aesop Rock – None Shall Pass Lyrics 13 years ago
I think that verse is basically saying, If you've had an easy life, (never had a day a snow cone couldn't fix), you can't really relate to people who go through legitimately tough shit. (The rogue vocoder blitz = rap industry?)

The Antlers – Shiva Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the singer agrees with you. There's a live performance I saw of this song and he gets visibly choked up singing that line.

of Montreal – The Past Is a Grotesque Animal Lyrics 14 years ago
To me, this song really takes a similar position in my mind to Neutral Milk Hotel's "Oh Comely." It's an incredible song, full of meaning, but it's also incredibly, hopelessly depressing. I find it hard to listen to them without feeling actual mental stress. Still amazing songs, I'm just amazed by how incredibly... disturbing they are, almost. It's strange.
