I also assumed this was about Julia from 1984, although of course interpreting it differently is totally cool. It just reminded me of her, with references to dressing like a boy, and having messed up make-up which I believe is mentioned in one of the scenes in the book where Winston and Julia are in their secret room above the antique shop or whatever. :) David Bowie is amazing either way! |

This song gives me the chills, and like a lot of BoC's songs, reminds me of my childhood. I never know whether to feel happy or sad listening to their stuff, it's like they suspend you perfectly between both extremes.
On a side note, we used to have this little toy organ in my grandma's basement that my brother and I would play around with, and the tune of that song sort of brings that to mind. |

This song is so peaceful and...transcendent. Is that the word? Anyways, it reminds me of going camping and waking up to that perfectly serene moment just before the sun starts to rise. Just me though, lol. :) |

Wow this song gave me chills the first time I heard it.
It's great to have someone representing those of us in society who do not accept religion. It seems to me as if some religious individuals feel that they can go around spreading their views when and wherever they please, yet society looks down on and criticizes those of us who speak up for the opposing view. People should be allowed to believe in whatever they choose, but in my opinion, this also means that non-religious people shouldn't be made to feel embarassed of their beliefs.
On a side note, I really like how Davey plays on the concept of "pure love" at the end of the song. If love is filled with delusion and is making people bleed, perhaps it's not so pure after all... |

I get that the album is based on 1984, but to imply that you can only interpret the song in that one way doesn't make much sense to me. Does it really matter what it's based on? It's interesting to know what the thought process behind the piece was, I suppose, but at the end of the day, song lyrics are all about interpretation and relating the artist's thoughts to how you experience the world. Just my opinion, not that I don't love a great book! |
