Great song I agree with pretty much everything everyone else said. The meaning is pretty clear but I've often wondered if his violent outburst wasn't unprovoked. The lyrics 'they had you holed up in a downtown bar, SCREAMING FOR A PRIEST' seems to insinuate that he was in danger in some way or at least he thought he was. The latter seems to make more sense since someone tried to calm him down. Perhaps he was imagining that someone meant to do him harm as is said in a latter lyric. Who knows, doesn't really excuse his actions but it's interesting to think about. |

I think this song is just what it is, about two people in a fallout shelter (which had the controls to launch a nuke itself). It's about how they created their own world while the world was being destroyed in WW III. I like the semi-funny semi-cynical end where he is tempted to push the button, just because he thinks their love wouldn't work above ground. |

I am not sure if he slept with her or not. I originally thought it was obvious that he did. I even thought that 'I'll be the one to drive you back home' was a metaphor for being the one to steal her virginity. But recently my friend said that he didn't think so since Ritter said at the start of one concert that this song was about when he was 15 and the girl was 30. Reasons for thinking he did sleep with her: 'Both our hearts have a secret only both of us know, 'bout the night that I drove you back home Kathleen' don't know what this could mean other than sleeping with her. I guess she could have told him a secret also, but that seems less likely. That line and my earlier statement make me think it is a song about taking her virginity. Reasons for thinking he didn't: In the CD booklet it calls this song 'geek love' or something like that, which doesn't normally mean selling virginity. 'I'll be yours for a song.' Seems to suggest that it won't take that long to bring her home if she is just going to be there for one song. 'But I'm here and I'm ready and I saved you the passenger seat. I won't be your last dance, just your last good night.' This line and 'I know you are waiting and I know that it is not for me,' hint that she already has someone else, or likes someone who isn't Ritter. |

I think this song is about someone telling the one they love about how they really feel. Seems like he's just happy to tell her this and she most likely doesn't feel the same hench, 'I sang in exultation pulled the stops you always looked a little bored But I'm singing for the love of it have mercy on the man who sings to be adored' and 'But I've flown a long way honey hear my confession then I'll go I'd rather be the one who loves than to be loved and never even know' The main verse is sorta saying that he sorta isn't sure about her but he'd rather be in love and be rejected then never know what could have happen. |

I think this song is about a girl who killed herself Hench the 'Trouble is the only way is down. Down, down' also the, "And they were all born pretty in New York City tonight And someone's little girl was taken from the world tonight. Under the Stars and Stripes" The main verse too says this 'As strong as you were, tender you go I'm watching you breathing for the last time A song for your heart, but when it is quiet I know what it means and I'll carry you home, I'll carry you home.' notice he says 'as strong as you were' in past tense. 'Watching you breathing for the last time' the last time she'll be breathing. 'A song for your heart, but when it is quiet I know what it means and I'll carry you home, I'll carry you home.'' I think Blunt might be singing from the prospective of an angel maybe? Not sure. That would explain the carry you home after she is done breathing and the part about god giving her wings. |
