This song was actually inspired by Wilson Pickett's "Land of a thousand dances". "It's almost the same riff but with a different beat" - Tom Petty. Song is about alienation and was written during a time where Tom's thoughts were "very blunt, [with] just little bursts of adrenalin". |

Actually this song is written to Ike Turner from Tom Petty. While Tom was on the road, his wife (Jane)was at a party with Denny Cordell (Tom's producer)at Ike Turners house. According to Jane, she was cornered by Ike in a scary circumstance. That was the idea behind the song and they actually played it quite a bit on stage before they cut it. There was some controversey about the the song lyrics - at the time, stations didn't want to play the song because of the reference to cocaine - which was a big deal to Tom because he felt as if taking the word cocaine and replacing it with what the management wanted (Champagne) wasn't the same and didn't carry the same weight - Tom held his ground and the lyrics remained the same. Great song. |
