I think this is less about getting "back together" with someone (which implies that one was in a relationship with another, that relationship failed, and they want to get back together), but about reconnecting (as in they simply grew apart). I think the song is about a romantic relationship with someone, but the concept can be applied to many different relationships (for example, father and child, friends, ect.). |

I like the fact that they use the word "fucking" instead of "making love" or "having sex." I think the vulgarity of it adds to the fact that the song is about shallow sex. Powerful. |

I don't know for sure, but it sounds like, "Beth's recital I had to run." Meaning: He went, but he was so drunk he had to leave? Not sure, that's just what I hear. Besides, it rhymes better with graduation.
Also, I don't think this is the singer looking back on his childhood from his father's perspective. I think this is just the singer telling a story of alcoholism from a perspective that is not usual. Just because he's singing about it doesn't mean it has any connection to his life. |
