Jack White – On and On and On Lyrics 12 years ago
Definitely sounds like it. Especially after the White Stripes went on hiatus some friends of mine were really angry about it but looking at it from his perspective, he's really continuing to grow and expand as an artist. Maybe he's just not the same person he used to be and wants to explore newer interests, or has finished up that stage of his career. Some great lyrics on this album.

Last night I was out with a girl I had been involved with and I knew it was ending. As she started to bring up the topic she was hesitant and I kept sorta saying internally "come on, do it", but in actuality this song popped in my head.

Arctic Monkeys – That's Where You're Wrong Lyrics 12 years ago
I enjoyed this breakdown of the album because I saw some links in the other songs and this articulated a few others for me...

01 - "She's Thunderstorms": Boy meets girl and is surprised at how different she is (as you said)

02 - "Black Treacle": I don't think it's drug-related. Think seeing things is not as literal as you may be suggesting, but that's just my opinion. When they're side by side he sees things differently and it puts certain things into perspective, and he's already predicting that the path he's chosen is going to lead to defeat but he just has to stay the course and experience life. Not sure how the chorus links into my theory but it just feels like he's feeling out of place in society and perhaps she has helped him feel more free to be himself. In general, he's feeling out of place and is trying to fake happiness (hiding the key under the mat just incase he needs it) and is not successful at doing so.

03 - "Brick by Brick": He wants all in on this girl. Go through the good, the bad, and build together.

04 - "The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala": Perhaps the relationship is starting to show signs of cracking. She upsets him somehow with a revelation and by blowing out the candle he/they are extinguishing the flame, and now he has to see if there's still something worth pursuing.

05 - "Don't Sit Down 'Cause I've Moved Your Chair": Perhaps this is a passive aggressive way of approaching things with his girlfriend by playing games with her. Building up her trust then pulling the rug out from under her in various ways.

06 - "Library Pictures": To steal from the thread itself, maybe this is just a pure song about having sex. The back and forth with all the tension building, perhaps this is just the physical explosion the two have.

07 - "All My Own Stunts": Reflecting on the period he has spent with the girl and begins pondering life with just himself or with her by his side.

08 - "Reckless Serenade": To steal from yours, "A lonely Boy tries to contact Girl and she accepts his offer to meet up, as friends. As they remember their good times together, Boy wonders whether she could ever really care about him again."

09 - "Piledriver Waltz": She has moved on from him and given him some bad news. She's leaving, he's sad. If you're going to risk walking on water, wear comfortable shoes because there is a chance you don't succeed.

10 - "Love Is A Laserquest": Is she ready to settle with somebody (or him?) or is she going around and basically living the life of the fling (short-term solutions). He's reflecting on the good times they've had but now certain places remind him of her. He's heartbroken. He's finding short-term solutions (booze) to overcome his sadness but at the end of the day, it's not working.

11 - "Suck It And See": He loves this girl; she's rare. He took the great plunge into the classic romance song and was not up to the task of creating poetry. However, it's better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all, and you have to just give it a shot to see if good things happen. He was optimistic about pursuing the relationship, but at the same time hesitant that she could break his heart (first alluded to on Black Treacle). She has, but it was worth a shot, such is life.

12 - "That's Where You're Wrong": Live your life and do what makes you happy. Create experiences, take the plunge on love and take a chance. No one knows what's going to happen, just enjoy the ride. Make a wish that weighs a tonne, it might pay off with big rewards or new experiences. He feels good again and ready to pursue the world. Time will fly by for all of us and don't dwell on what could have been. Move forward with what the unknown has to offer.

Wow. I've listened to this album a ton of times and... never made the connection that it could really be a concept album (by accident?).

Apparently dandelion and burdock is a British soft drink (Wikipedia), so perhaps the aforementioned drink is more rare than readily-available and easily accessible post-mix lemonade.

This and Laserquest are having a similar effect of back-to-back heartbreaking songs, much like the Last Shadow Puppets album. I haven't thought much about it until typing right now but the story of this song seems like it COULD come before the recovery of losing love on Laserquest. Optimistic, but aware that she was made to break his heart and then on Laserquest him trying to find somebody new and being unable to remove his connection from the previous lover.

Amber is the warning stage of driving through an intersection, so perhaps there is risk involved with the mysteries of this relationship and with finding out more about how she feels. When she answers, he'll be able to move forward, but by doing nothing (and stopping at red), things remain stagnant. I don't know, I'm stumped too haha

The cannon one, I think you're correct and that he heard the news that she's planning to get rid of him (in dramatic fashion?).

Not exactly a contribution on my part, but I've been listening to this album alot more recently (no particular reason, probably just in prep for MBDTF) and this song maintains its powerful feel a couple of years later. Sad stuff, sorry to hear about that story thursday99.

Kanye West – So Appalled Lyrics 13 years ago
I think Jay is referring to himself actually as the villain (in some peoples eyes, such as beginners). Just in general how more and more people seem to take shots at his music these days when at one time he was the next big thing. I like his music and there's no denying his success, but there are plenty of critics out there. The underpaid or overrated line is almost admitting to selling out though, if he is infact referring to himself. Which would you rather be, catering to the underground scene or rich (not underpaid) and viewed as overrated? The Dark Knight line is him making himself the villain again, somewhat paranoid line about how eventually some of your original fans will turn against you.

By the way, isn't it "I might buy the mall/ Just to show n***as how much more I have in store"?

Sam Roberts – Them Kids Lyrics 14 years ago
First off, this song is catchy as hell and grew on me alot. But is there more to it than just the obvious chorus? Think the_howee was onto something there about the simpler times, mainly the lyrics about the man on the street corner playing guitar and how the kids are "always on the phone and they always gotta have control", and how these good ol' days are under attack and are a dying breed ("we're taking them back, we're taking them back"). "The melody that you thought you found reveals that she's been sleeping around", can't quite pinpoint it but sounds something the lines of the process of creating songs has become corrupted? I may be way off but I'm really liking this song and album suddenly. "I can't sell my songs so I'm gonna have to give them away/ I can't sell myself since my hair started turning grey", perhaps since he's considered older there isn't a place for him in the mainstream?

I'm kind of overanalyzing past the point of the chorus. :)

Them Crooked Vultures – No One Loves Me & Neither Do I Lyrics 14 years ago
Jamafrican, I haven't broken down the song verse by verse (just in general), but here's me giving it a shot...

"Think I saw her for the first time maybe in a news stand
She was picking a mag, dressed oblique
She called me baby, and was a mean lady with the song on the radio
So I told her I was rich, then she asked could I use a dirty bitch?
Of course"

(Narrator sees sexy lady at a magazine stand dressed in black. She was flirty, narrator tells her he's rich and she wanted into his life (of course))

Then she said: No one loves me... and neither do I
You get what you give,
I give goodbye
And if I should vanish,
Don't get caught off guard
Don't hold it against me,
Unless it gets hard

(Woman tells him she's pretty much looking for a one-night stand. Don't be offended if I leave tomorrow. "Don't hold it against me, unless it gets hard" has innuendo all over it.)

Well if sex is a weapon, then: smash, boom, pow
How you like me now?
You can't always do right, you can always do what's left
So I told her I was trash, so she winked & laughed and said I already know...
'I've got a beautiful place to put your face', and she was right

(They're having sex, narrator's pretty much in cocky mode about it. Sometimes you can't always go for the relationship or whatever and just have to settle for what's left, this random chick on the street. Last line is self-explanatory.)

Then I said: No one loves me... and neither do I
It makes perfect sense,
So I never asked why
I'll go tomorrow,
'Cause life doesn't wait
You can keep your soul,
I don't want a cell mate

(Narrator tells lady he isn't looking for anything serious and just a one-night stand essentially. I don't want a relationship, boldly stated in the last sentence.)

Cutting her loose, I'm ready to go
People in the world, you're gonna lose control
Cut me a noose, I'm ready to go
People in the world, you're gonna lose control
Cut me a noose, I'm ready to go
People in the world, you're gonna lose control
Cut me a noose, I'm ready to go
People in the world, you're gonna lose

(He's out, what's next...)

(BOOOOOOOOOOOOM! Just wanted to throw this in because this part of the song always gets me.)

I know how to burn with passion
Hold nothing back for future ration
Give all you are, do not make haste
Savor every single taste you get
Cut

(Live in the moment, don't hold back for tomorrow.)

I know how to beat control
Do opposite of what you're told
Quick to react, to break the box
Turn on queue, as your cell door locks
Behind you

(Have fun or you'll be stuck in relationship jail.)

I know how to be lost in lust
Not because you should, but because you must
It burns white hot, and so clouds the mind
This lightning strike isn't always kind

(Sex is best when you're in lust.)

So use me up
Use me up

(Use me up and move on.)

I can't believe how much I broke this song down but it's still awesome.

Arkells – Tragic Flaw Lyrics 14 years ago
Sounds like a new long-term relationship. Starts off with them talking on the phone with him wanting to say something that was on his mind but knows he should hold off, "ah shit it just came out" (been there, done that). He wants her to still be his and is happy with her dressed-down, low-maintenance perhaps, "cool" dresscode because it doesn't scream to get other guys attention and is more likely to keep her as his girlfriend.

Chorus... she's out of town for now, she's on his mind but when he talks to her he's reassured and good again. Second verse... he has to be careful to not leave things on a sour note when they have arguements because you never know what's truly going on on her end (and who she may vent to, perhaps). Instead of getting mad, he bites his tongue and keeps things on the up-and-up.

Them Crooked Vultures – Bandoliers Lyrics 14 years ago
One of my favourites on the album!

As far as meanings go, as verse 1 begins it sounds like the guy has been left in some capacity by a woman. Now it gets twisted here for me, either she went all dramatic on him and that's a route he won't go and is taking the high road OR simply being left is something he doesn't want. I'm leaning on the latter due to the next set of lyrics where nobody caused the rift, perhaps it's a clean break due to circumstances not based on one party doing wrong to the other, but just busy schedules, new interests, both, etc. "Prepare and take aim, and fire, on me".

Verse 2, seems like she lied to him in some regard and he was naive enough to believe it (coincidently now leaning to my first initial scenario), and now admits to seeing the change in her. He's taking the high road out, "Fire away, if you must, but I only came just to let you know, this is goodbye."
