Hello out there! Clearly the driver isn't driving. Tweedy says "let me make you a deal- just get behind the wheel" He says this after he sings "You're gonna make me spill my beer if you don't learn how to steer" They have been swerving all around with this other person "in control" of the situation. I think he is saying that he normally "wears the pants" in relationships and he allowed this other person to be in charge and it is a swerving, swilling, spilling, completely f-ed up mess. Maybe the relationship "drove" him to drinking too much. He doesn't like riding on the passenger side. He likes control, people. 5 comments for this song? Are you kidding me? My girlfriend said this song reminded her of a fucked up cyber relationship. Thus the title "Fake Empire". She said it could have been different if it was conducted (with balls) in real life. But half awake in a fake empire is about being half asleep sitting at your computer when you could have been experiencing something much more genuine and authentic if you had only used your guts and dealt with things in an up front manner. I agree that it is about falling out of love. I have a friend who is mentally ill. I am not sure if he is bipolar or if he just (well, not JUST, but you know) suffers from depression. I think it is really complicated because if you throw drinking and medication and/or drugs in the mix, there are so many layers and it is like a cluster fu@k situation. He may very well struggle with alcoholism. Then, say, he grapples with being a closet homosexual (and sometimes actually wishing he was a woman) and that complicates things even more. Then add the fact that we all have darker sides to our personality but he is letting his get the best of him. This song reminds me of him. There are so many people who love him and care about him and want the best for him. Me included. |
