Well, the second post is the only one i agree with. This song was written about trying to write a hit.
He couldnt thin of anything worth writing about... The fire that he couldnt start is a metaphor for the song he couldnt write and the spark he couldnt find is a metaphor for the great idea he couldnt find.
This theory is supported by lyrics such as 'I'm sock of sitting 'round here trying to write this book' and 'there's something happening somewhere, baby i just know there is'...as in something is happening somewhere that he can write about.
Most of the other lyrics are just about him trying to gert ideas to write about, such as love, peace, etc...
And this isnt just my interpretation, this is widely accepted.

This is one of the best break-up songs ever written, I think. It perfectly describes my own. It was just over, and it was too late to change anything and there was nothing either of us could do. I love Carole King. Tapestry is one of my favourite albums. |

This an experience song for me too...I went to the 'Old Friends' concert about a year ago to see my IDOLS...This was the only song i hadnt heard that they played at that concert and i just got the most amazing feeling listening to it there...It was incredible. It would have been a great song regardless, but with that experience added to it, it is one of my favourites. |

This is a truly beautiful song. I love the song...But the video clip?? It sucksn dude!! MJ was the best short film-maker possibly EVER, but this one was a stinker!! It consists of him doing lame-ass little spins onstage in what looks like a dressing-gown and later stripping out of this with his biatch (now) ex-wife Lisa Marie Presley...It is just disturbing and Mike really didn't do himself justice with this one.
And Gardobus is totally right about the 'closet mj-lovers'...At least some of them are starting to come out now i guess |

It is really weird...I have this friend named Rhiannon (Her Mum loves Fleetwood Mac and I'm just guessing that she was named after this song)...But It's like this song was written about her I swear (obviously it is impossible because she wasn't even born then) but just listening to the lyrics about a mysterious girl who you can never really know or hold down for any length of time (thats my interpretation anyway it really is like the song was written about her. I'm not even gonna go there with these lyrics or any Fleetwood Mac lyrics. Half the time Stevie Nicks (Awesome) didn't know what she was singing about and the band members have said a few times that they were bewildered most of the time as to what Stevie was referring to. I think that you just have to interpret the lyrics how you think they should be interpretted. LEAVE CANDA ALONE OR PUT YOUR OWN FRICKIN INTERPRETATIONS IN, YOU NASTY PEOPLE!
I just love the feeling that this song and just about every Fleetwood Mac song gives me when I listen to them...This one in particular just makes me feel powerful and conscious...I love songmeanings :)

I am, like, 98 percent sure that this is actually a split enz song. It was on their 'History Never Repeats: Best of alubm...Either way I love both bands and this song...I too was raised on Crowded House and Split Enz...I cant listen to any of their without being reminded of at least one family member.

This girl from America was really obsessed with Neil and flew to Te Awamutu to meet him...
She met him one night after a gig when he was sick and nursing headache. She sat down next to him at the bar and started telling him the many woes of her life 'her parents are divorced/her friends committed suicide'.
Neil realised that he was talking to a crazy and eventually managed to pass off to a friend of his (I forget the name now) who was a poet and left her with him.
I read an interview with him a few years ago where he discussed this...The lyrics do appear to be reffering to this story |

Well hell Ladyinp, (not that I don't agree with you or anything-It annoys the shit out of me too)....But you just contradicted yourself and made a hypocrite of yourself in that last comment. I mean, first you say 'just comment on the song, not on the personal life of Michael, then went right on ahead and did exactly what you told everybody else not to do...Then you say 'stop defending him now that he's dead...Well would you prefer that everybody just CONTINUED to call him a child-molesting creep??
I saw it how you just said at first too- becuase I've spent a good part of my life defending from the same people who are now worshipping him in his death-but now I see that it is better he gets the credit he always deserved late than never at all..."Better late than never" as they say
Songmeanings is fantastic btw!! A friend of mine introduced me to it last week :)
Oh, and now to the song...It's embarrassing because this song is sorta cheesy (in a good way) but I LOVE THIS SONG...It's a song that can always make me happy...or at least it always used to...Now when I listen to it I feel sad thinking of poor MJ :(

I think any song can be interpreted according to the listener, but I think it's absolutely brilliant that we can say how we've interpretted great songs like this here!!! I always thought this song was about the lack of love and commitment in relationships nowadays, like frostypeanut said...but that's just me |
