Elbow – Mirrorball Lyrics 2 years ago
@[Montpelier42:38756] Holy smokes, you're right about the newborn interpretation, I hadn't realized. Wow, I already loved the lyrics, now I have a whole new level of respect.

In a song that's jam-packed with quotable lines, I love how "know that while you sleep" can equally refer to the line before or the one that follows.
Guy is one fine songwriter.

Mark Knopfler – The Fizzy and the Still Lyrics 3 years ago
As an aside, I love the way Mark builds this entire song around what is essentially an unmoving tableau, just the snapshot of a moment. He describes a single scene and lets the listener fill in the background, both in the visual and chronological sense. That's top-notch storytelling skills right there, from a guy who gets most of his accolades as a guitar hero.

Mark Knopfler – The Fizzy and the Still Lyrics 3 years ago
I think there may be an allusion to alcoholism in the lyrics.

The parent/narrator is sitting with the newly returned son at a table with booze on it, on a Sunday _morning_.

There might be a drinking problem passing from one generation to the next one, and the parent defeatedly realizes that the son's "too high a price" explanation fails to acknowledge the apparent truth - that he failed because he couldn't get his act together.

My two cents, anywhizz...

Belle & Sebastian – Wrapped Up in Books Lyrics 5 years ago
@[kaitlingrace:27070] My thoughts exactly: bookish young guy/girl torn between a love of hometown and a desire to be more, do more, leave. It would be very Stuart to put something like that in romantic terms.

Mark Knopfler – Are We in Trouble Now Lyrics 7 years ago
A crystal-clear portrait of unexpected mature passion. It takes a wordsmith like old Mark to be this painstakingly accurate while still making it rhyme. Amazing little jewel of a song.

Billy Paul – Me and Mrs. Jones Lyrics 10 years ago
Yeap, every song ever written is always about the songwriter's addiction to (fill in the blanks with your drug of choice). Star Spangled Banner was actually about Francis Scott Key's addiction to clam chowder.

I nearly fell off my chair the first time I saw the mumbling scene. This song is the national anthem of white Trustafarian pathetism.

Billy Joel – Just The Way You Are Lyrics 11 years ago
I love ole Billy as much as the next middle-aged guy, but this song is hilariously douchey and passive-aggressive. It speaks volumes about how much gender relations have evolved since the seventies.
Back when it was released, it probably meant "Hey babe, I'm so easygoing and awesome, let's have sex".
Nowadays it sounds more like "I'm an abulic slob who hates change, so don't bother trying to improve one bit because I sure as hell won't. Oh, and don't you even THINK of freaking AGING on me."

I still do love Billy, though.

Exactly.

I love the Moz as much as the next aging geek and this is a great tune, but man... creepiest lyrics ever.

I've always though it was about dying.
In any case, she kills me every time with it.

Rachael Yamagata – Elephants Lyrics 13 years ago
This song literally shatters me every single time.
Any one who has ever loved and lost, even once, will find these lyrics hitting home like a freaking meteor. Not to mention the haunting melody. And the piano. And Rachael's voice. And her eyes. And the freckles, oh shit, don't even get me started on the freckles...

It's easy: play the song and listen to it.

It's like you've been reading my mind, except you actually had the words to put it all down on paper. And the Morrissey reference is brilliant. I love B&S and Moz for the same reasons: all the ambiguous, forlorn lyrics hinting at taboo-ridden situations appeal to the shy, self -loathing kid I once was (and to the misanthropic asshole I've become, but I digress...), and while I recognize the potential for a gay interpretation, I can relate to these words from a hetero viewpoint 100%.
Thanks for writing this.

Me too; anyone who's been in this kind of one-sidedly "open" relationship will instantly know what this song is about.
That said, the amazing thing about lyrics is that whatever the writer meant originally - every listener makes them thir own. For instance, I never noticed any guy-on-guy reference in this song until I saw the above comments, and I can totally understand how it can be taken that way.

Yeah, you're right, we're all morons and your totally inevitable interpretation is the only sound one, except it's also about how 9-11 was an inside job, oh, and also Jewish alien lizard people. And biscuits and gravy.

Ray LaMontagne – Meg White Lyrics 14 years ago
Meg is a Damsel in Distress, and Ray is idiosincratic enough to take on the role of her Knight in Shiny Armour* who doesn't give a flying rat's ass what everybody else thinks, he's gonna write this song for her and record it and put it in an album because, damn**!

*(He's been growing the beard and all.)
**(Also because, boobs! - consideration by me, not Ray Lamontagne.)

Sarah McLachlan – Sweet Surrender Lyrics 14 years ago
Exactly, that's what I thought too.
I first paid attention to this song's lyrics throughout my mother's terminal illness and death, so maybe it's only natural I connected it with the notion of death and dying rather than the end of a relationship.
Anyway, like every great song, it's open enough for anyone to get their own meaning out of it... as well as their own healing.

Pants-shittingly kickass, that's how kickass it is. This song is like a movie, but then, all Moz songs are.

I don't know about Loudon, but my eyes do fill up every single time I hear this song.
I discovered this song briefly after the day my dad died and my second son was born (yaeh, on the SAME FREAKING DAY), so imagine what a heavy load of father-son meanings it carries for me.

Ditto from a Hungarian-Argentine!
I had to crack up when I read Orion's comment about Estonia "losing the cold war". WTF?

So it was Estonia who secretely pulled the strings all the time? While the whole Western world kept shitting their pants about Russian missiles?
Well played!! You nearly got away with it, Estonia. And you would have, had Proffessor Orion Blasta not boldly unmasked you.

One good thing about ignorance is the unpremedited comedic value it brings to the world.

"Mr. Smith"?
You didn't exactly do yourself a favor with this comment.
How responsible or respectful is anything Dubya was into when this song was recorded?
Also, for things to say about the Yookay, pls refer to the Mozza's own "Irish blood, English heart".
