Lykke Li – Tonight Lyrics 12 years ago
I saw a dance to this song once, that was a senior farewell piece. The theme of the dance defines the song for me. Sometimes, people have to grow apart or leave each other. When that time comes, the person who's left behind tries to be strong for the person who's leaving, and vice versa. Even though they haven't been separated yet, everyone knows it's coming, and this song is a plea to hold on for a little while longer. Don't let me go yet. That's how I interpret it, at least. But any way you see it, it's a beautiful song.

Missy Higgins – I'm All For Believing Lyrics 13 years ago
That's really good for her being 15. But now that I'm reading it, the theme does sound like a typical 15 year old kind of thinking. But still, the song is amazing, especially since she was so young when she wrote it!

Missy Higgins – Don't ever Lyrics 13 years ago
I agree with everyone really. The line that sticks out to me is the "let's tell them all, cuz soon they'll know/how very wrong they were to think we'd never go." I think nobody expects this relationship to last very long, but she is hopeful that they could have a great life together-- as long as he doesn't leave her first.

I feel the same way! I love the song, but it's a little too relevant to my life sometimes. I can't hear it without tearing up... I've completely been there before.

I think maybe it's not even about a specific relationship, it's just about the girl herself. She's the sort of girl who throws herself into her relationships with all her heart, but nobody she finds is willing to do that back. They even get amused by her intensity, and possibly scared off. She needs to know that there's somebody out there who believes in love as strongly as she does, or she will end up a cynic all alone because she isn't willing to settle for a cheap imitation of what her heart wants to find.

Charlotte Martin – Every time It Rains Lyrics 13 years ago
I think there's a message here that even though life hurt you and there are going to be hard times for everyone at some point, there is a strange beauty in them because the more miserable they make you feel the more you can appreciate the good times in your life. Don't give up just because things aren't great right now, because you'll feel 10 times better when things start to look up than you would have without the hard times.

Missy Higgins – Unbroken Lyrics 14 years ago
Not necessarily. I agree with you that it is a divorce in the first verse. However, I think the second verse is the child whose parents got divorced growing up and living in her own relationship. I think its an abusive marriage but there is probably a kid involved. The woman remembers how much her parent's divorce hurt her and is determined to stay with he husband for the sake of a kid.

And really, the name calling and cursing is unnecessary. I mean, yes, it's a free country and all of that so I won't try to censor you, but I will tell you that your attitude is not going to win you many friends. I just hope for your sake that you're nicer in person than you are online.

Lisa Loeb – Taffy Lyrics 14 years ago
I think it's just about that one guy (or girl) who is lying no matter what they're saying. Nobody takes them seriously, and every time they open their mouth, all of their friends exchange glances or elbow each other or roll their eyes or whatever. I had a friend like this when I was growing up. I think the narrator has finally gotten so frustrated with this person, that she's telling them exactly what everyone thinks about him/her. The music makes the song sound sort of confrontational.

Idina Menzel – Forever Lyrics 14 years ago
I remember at her concert a few years ago she performed this song. When she introduced it, she laughed about the depressing nature of this song. She said it wasn't really about anything, she just sort of started writing and came up with this. Of course, Taye was there in the audience (he was actually only like ten feet from where I was sitting... GAH! :D) so it's possible that it was from experience but she didn't want to bring it up with him watching. I believe her though, because I've written poems before that sound really depressing just because it was fun and the words came easily. I think that's all this was.

I agree, NonStopDance. She's been dependent for too long on this other person and is finally plucking up the courage to leave. It's nothing against this other person, she just wants to try standing on her own for once. That's how I've always interpreted it.

Frou Frou – Psychobabble Lyrics 14 years ago
I am probably totally off on this, however: I see a response to a drunk dial. She still has feelings for the guy calling, but she's trying her hardest to get over him and BAM he shoves himself back in her face. She's talking to him, partly glad that he called her, partly mad because he's totally shitfaced, and partly irritated that he reminded her of him when she was so close to being over him. Not all of it makes sense, which is why I think I'm probably wrong, but some parts just work too perfectly and I was never able to think up anything better.

I like the hostage idea, however. It definitely fits with the lyrics. :)

Death Cab for Cutie – Someday You Will Be Loved Lyrics 14 years ago
I think he left a relationship when he was young because he just didn't have feelings for her anymore, and he didn't regret doing it because he's a lot happier now, but he doesn't have anything against her either and he feels bad for breaking her heart so he reassures her that there is someone out there better than him who will actually be able to return her feelings.

Maria Mena – Cause and Effect Lyrics 14 years ago
I think that this is a therapy session. "I'll tell you what caused it if you'll handle the effects." I picture her in a shrinks office, pouring her heart out to try and get a handle on the emotional damage her past has caused. And I think I read somewhere that it was in therapy Maria Mena started writing poems (which eventually became songs) in the first place, so it makes sense.

I think it's simply this: she wishes that her life had been different, but when it comes down to it at least she is alive.

That's what I was thinking too. It definitely sounds like abuse, but it doesn't sound like a relationship... So I'm thinking parent or mentor/teacher abuse, but I'm not really sure.

Missy Higgins – This is how it goes Lyrics 14 years ago
I see one of those completely dysfunctional relationships that by all accounts should not work... but somehow it does. They fight, the argue, they come so close to leaving each other every five seconds, but they really love each other and always end up back together. If anyone is a Scrubs fan, think of Dr. Cox and Jordan.

Ingrid Michaelson – Corner of Your Heart Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm not sure if it's necessarily an affair, although I got that impression at first too. I think she's putting all her effort and love into one man who probably doesn't care as much, although he does like her a little. He saves a corner of his heart, a minute of his day, and the space underneath his bed. Not very much room when you think about it. There may be another woman in the rest of the space, I don't know. But she can't help but love him, and give him everything, even though she gets next to nothing out of it.

The other possibility I've considered is maybe he's been hurt before and is afraid to give her more that that one minute, that tiny corner. But she's leaving everything, packing her bags, so they can work on it. She will settle for the underside of his bed, until she opens him enough that he's willing to share the top. Just a thought.

Ingrid Michaelson – Mosquito Lyrics 14 years ago
To me, the "mosquito" is one of those puppy dog crushes that you know you will never like back. Everyone's had or seen a relationship like that. He's usually a sort of nerdy kid, but very sweet, constantly there, irritating the narrator, but she can't really get mad at him because all he wants is to be with her. And even though she doesn't like him back, she likes the attention that she gets from him, because nobody else cares so much about her. She probably even thinks of him as a friend. The narrator likes flirting with him too, to raise her confidence. "Wouldn't you love if I fell like Snow White?" She might even be falling for him, just a little, but she knows that she can't give in because the other kiddies at school would make fun of her. So she blames him for "poisoning" her with his affection, and with the confidence and happiness it gives her. She probably also feels guilty because she keeps breaking his heart, although I don't see it in this song. I don't know if that's what Ingrid Michaelson intended, but that's how I interpret it, anyway.
