There is reference to a lot of what is above Bogart movie, being Casablanca was meaning that this man was thinking love affairs like ricks lover had with rick because of her husbands absance. even though she didn't have a sexual affair this is implied by many other things. Peter Lorre played the theif in Casablanca. He was thinking of meeting a prostitute. he was in Asia, noted by the patchouli an Asian insense, her silk dress and "coming out of the Sun". The Sex Market is also very high in Asia. She was a poor prositute who lived somewhere in the Marketplace probally illegally. Now the Year Of the Cat refers the Vietnamese astrology. Year of the Cat is the stress-free year and this is the illusion of Sexual behavior. So this tourist missed all his tours in this Asian country for a night with this prostitute but knows he can't stay with her. he has another life. I am sorry to give you this answer YearOfTheCat but its the truth to the songs interpretation is. But there is a chance that Al Stewart is showing that this is an Illusion that is shown to the world but I can't tell. Though Im sure youll agree with me that I sure hope that is so.
