Oh,to live in a world where a song like this would still reign supreme.It's fun,catchy and extremely sing-able!!.However twee/camp the vid for this may be--can you see either of elton or kiki taking either of themselves over seriously--NO, I can't either!!!Both of them are obviously enjoying singing an enjoyable SONG. |

The name of the girl that sang with him is kiki dee-(real name pauline matthews)I think.It seems however unlikely that they were actually dating each other, but were- and i think still are, extremely good friends.

Lyrically,ive never really analysed this song too much,but have drunk and fed on it,s emotive and rousing,musical passion.The true beauty of a well written song is that;they should and indeed,do work on different levels and can be interpreted in different ways.keebee,s extremely human and ultimately tragic story and painful experience are a fine example of this.RomanceLadys brilliant idea of it being a unisex song is another.However,when people like 6mdm are telling me that this song is SPECIFICALLY about a homosexual relationship and that the writer(Bernie Taupin-HETEROSEXUAL)is being DECEPTIVE and that i must listen to the song over and over again(which,believe me in the last 35 years i have)to get the REAL meaning according to them.Then i feel that person needs to look to their own insecurities on this issue.IF gays see something in this song for themselves i really have no problem with that and that,s fine.But WHY? is it with some people that just about every bloody song that elton wrote before 1976 is about homosexuality!It seems to me there is only one thing in the world worse than hating elton for being gay and that is;only recognising and liking him because he is! |

From the amazing"Worldwide"album.Last track on side one(I first bought this album on cassette.)Played it to death and wore the damn thing out.In a country like ours(U.K.)where nowhere is more than about 52 miles from the sea-this surely must have been a regular scenario on the first day of everyone,s hols as children!?Especially for the post war, new found affluence, baby boomer generation.Short and haunting in a way with some very snazzy sax woven between the verses and lines.5 Star track(there again, on this album that,s just the norm!) |

Anybody that likes Elton,s earlier stuff(or later for that matter)that has,nt already heard this needs to check this out immediately!For years I only had this on a really naff second hand vinyl record-you know,scratches,hiss, that kind of thing but it was still worth all the while playing because of it,s beautiful melody,orchestration and gorgeous lost-age-of-innocence scene painting words.Strangely,(and i don,t wish to get too maudlin)viewing the lyrics now as a 50 year old,almost 40 years later it seems to speak of an age and a time that has LONG gone. But then i suppose it has! Sighhh. |

I saw Lizzy on 3 occasions in the late 70s/early 80s,each time with a different lead guitarist-Robertson/Moore/White,and always found them thrilling to watch and brilliant to hear,but sadly never saw them perform this gem. What seems strange to me is that although this is quite a slow one (by their standards)is that their fabulous twin-edged guitar sound was never more evident!.Definitely-A POP ROCK CLASSIC!!. |

For the life of me!WHY? anyone as good looking,(and I am NOT gay!)ultra-cool and rich to boot,as BT should wind up as a misogynist,and pay tribute to prostitutes i really don,t know!.Well! it,s probably because he isn,t.No,what i think that he might be trying to do is express that:-What a shitter life can be for some people and just what they unfortunately, have to do to get through ( not their promiscuity!). An absolutely haunting and evocative piece which always puts me in mind of the yorkshire moors(especially near Top Withens/Howarth ).The guitar counterplay between steve and mike was never better!.I also have very fond memories of banging my head to the "....in that quiet earth". section of this track on friday nights-just before going out and having my pre-weekend gallon,in the 70s. |

Dont know about BT coming from Wessex.Wiltshire was about as far north as Wessex got!.But like somebody said - the name probably just stuck from an old history lesson as a kid!.Have to say there is some great but fanciful interpretations on this thread.For myself i just think the lyrics scan well and sounded ultra cool when i was 15 years old-singing them in front of my pals.Sometimes i feel that a lot of songs dont stand up to too much critical analysis as lyrics ,just like riffs and melodies-if they sound good are good.(thats ROCK AND ROLL!). |

In actual fact i think it was bernie taupin(heterosexual) who wrote the lyrical score to this song and not elton himself.As i recall at the time EJ and BT went on record saying that this song was a reaction to certain small minded and negative comments being made in the press.Neither of them mentioned anything at all to do with sexual taboos.Elton even briefly mentions this on YOU TUBE (beginning of - all the nasties,live). |
