Modest Mouse – Life Like Weeds Lyrics 13 years ago
There are a million things I could say about this song, but I feel like a lot of it is stuff that I can't fully grasp, or put into words. I always noticed that in the first line, Isaac says "In this life like weeds you're just a rock to me." This gives the impression that the rock is pointless, or maybe instead of meaningless the rock is seen as a sort of obstacle, symbolizing a person who is getting in the way of his already chaotic life. Later, Isaac says "In this life like weeds, you're a rock to me." The music behind this line sounds less harsh, and emotion sounds different behind the line, like the rock symbolizes stability instead of pointlessness. It always amazed me how something as small as taking out the word "just" can change the meaning of an entire lyric.

I think ddr06001 pretty much already said this, though.

until I actually looked up the lyrics I also heard "old news, tied myself and tied myself to time." i can't believe somebody else heard that too!

I completely agree with denial. Listening to songs with "depressing" lyrics doesn't make a person emo. And I don't consider modest mouse to be an emo band, anyway. And I agree with everything they said about the meaning of the song. The line about the prom queen didn't really make sense to me either, but one day I was talking about it with my sister, and she pointed out that the prom queen is at a homecoming dance, and she's anxious because she's out of place. And since prom is a bigger deal than homecoming, maybe she feels superior to the people around her. But I'm not really sure how talking about this other person fits into the song either, since the rest is a self-realization.

About Modest Mouse being compared to Bright Eyes, I never really got that either. I went through a sort of Bright Eyes phase a few years ago, even though I only had one CD: I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning. The only similarity I can see is that both Isaac Brock and Connor Oberst both seem very cynical as lyricists, especially when talking about religion.

Wow...just realized I'm responding to something from 2004. Oh well...

Modest Mouse – Broke Lyrics 13 years ago
to me, this song is the epitome of emptiness.
there's something about the almost reverberating guitar tone, the looping and repetitive melody line...it's the kind of song that I crave, and have to put on repeat because listening to it once just isn't good enough. isaac has a sense of hopelessness in his voice with every lyric that he sings, and everything about the recording, as well as all early modest mouse, has a raw sound. I love how early MM sounds like they're playing right in your garage or basement...it gives the music a kind of sincerity that studio over-production and pitch correction take away. the lyrics in this song are brilliant. "broke my pace and ran out of time." isaac brock is a lyrical genius, enough said.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Warm Tape Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is beautiful. There's something so hypnotizing and addicting about the chorus... I think it's a story of love, but of love that can't completely be defined. There's a bitter-sweet sort of tone to the chorus, with the idea of two people, delicate and made of angel's dust, trying so hard to have a good relationship, but in the end there's that one thing keeping them from truly working: "I've been around but not around enough." I also love the lines about sleep in this song: "Sleeping next to you and I'm in your story" and "Sleeping next to you and I'm in your dreams." It makes me think about how sleep is such an intimate thing, and how close you feel to someone when you fall asleep next to them. If he's a part of her story, he's a part of her that can't easily be cut out. And you have to truly be close to someone to know that you're in their dreams. In a lot of ways, that's what love is. To me anyway.

Lady GaGa – Summerboy Lyrics 14 years ago
i like how the whole song sounds happy and carefree, and seems to end the cd on a positive note, but if you listen really closely at the end there's this weird keyboard thing that sounds almost out of key, and gives the song an eerie feeling, like something isn't finished and the song is ending on a comma. i love it...it gives the song a lot more depth.

The Fray – Over My Head (Cable Car) Lyrics 14 years ago
maybe it's just the way i'm looking at it, but i feel as if this song is more about friendship than a romantic relationship. but i think that's the best part of this song--that the lyrics are something everyone can relate to.
i think of this song as a falling out between two people. one person involved was headed in a wrong direction in life, and making bad decisions. but everyone around the person had had enough, so when the smoke cleared, no one was left to help. the second verse is the person wishing things could be easier, but at the same time knowing that their wishing won't make the other person a stranger and won't make them agree, either. "you find another friend and you discard" seems to be an accusation of the other person's problem; probably part of why the two had a falling out to begin with. but in the end, the bridge gives off a feeling of hopelessness and desperation. the person is becoming a part of the other person's past and losing them without even trying to, and it is clear that this is exactly what they don't want to happen.

they're exactly where they never wanted to end up.

Bloodhound Gang – Pennsylvania Lyrics 15 years ago
i really like the lyrics in the chorus of this song. i think the narrator is comparing himself to his ex-girlfriend in a beautifully metaphorical way. he's saying that she is the hear dotting "i" in the word "apologize," while contrastingly he is the "heart with no name airbrushed on the license plate of a subaru that was registered in pennsylvania." the girl seems quiet and honest, someone who went somewhere like hawaii (sent from somewhere volcanoes are) and got drunk and sent her old boyfriend a postcard saying apologize because she wants him to see he has done wrong, but also still loves him. the narrator is so different from his old girlfriend, because he is a rebel who airbrushed a heart onto the license plate of a car. but maybe the fact that they're so different is why they worked as a couple in the first place.
i know i probably read into it but i like telling myself there's an actual meaning to this song.

the line "laugh hard it's a long way to the bank" has always been my favorite in this song. i've always though of it as, laugh hard now, be optimistic and enjoy yourself, kinda live in the moment until you get to the bank, which symbolizes a place where people receive bad news, such as being broke. but don't worry about the bad news until it comes, until then just concentrate on the good things.
