The Flaming Lips – All We Have Is Now Lyrics
| 12 years ago
|
One of the most heartbreaking songs by the Flaming Lips.
You and me were never meant to be part of the future is one of the saddest lyrics Ive heard in a Flaming Lips song. I also feel sad when I hear in Waiting for a Superman, the line Its just too heavy for Superman to lift. |

Elton John – Daniel Lyrics
|
This song came out shortly before I was born. My Mom really liked the song so she named me "Daniel". This song is really sad, but sad songs say so much ;)
I hadn't pieced together that Daniel was a Vietnam vet, but in light of the fact that it came out in 1973, that makes a lot of sense. I could never figure out if Daniel was dead or if he was simply blind and/or disfigured. I find the line "Your eyes have died, but you see more than I" intriguing. He doesn't say he's gone blind, but that his eyes have died. Maybe Daniel died and the young child is thinking of his dead brother. Maybe since Daniel loved Spain and his relatives tell him "Daniel is in heaven" or "Daniel is in a better place" he thinks of him as being in Spain.

The Flaming Lips – She Don't Use Jelly Lyrics
| 14 years ago
|
I don't believe there is anything sexual about this song. People have been jumping to that conclusion because it's called "She Don't Use Jelly", but Wayne's talking about jelly that you'd put on toast.
Here's my take on it...
First of all I think Wayne wrote it as a humourous and weird quirky song and may not have intended any particular meaning behind it, but perhaps there is meaning nonetheless.
Verse 1 is about a girl who uses vaseline instead of jelly or butter, etc. This may be Wayne's way of saying "think about what you're eating" since chemically margarine and vaseline aren't that different.
Verse 2 is about a guy who goes to shows (bands, movies?) and uses magazines instead of tissues. The guy goes out and lives his life and judges things for himself instead of paying attention to reviews. To him, magazines are no more than snot rags. (can't be comfortable on the nose though).
Finally we have the girl in verse 3. She's using tangerines to colour her hair. Maybe it's Wayne's way of saying that perhaps there are natural solutions we often miss or overlook.

Sebadoh – Gimme Indie Rock Lyrics

Pretty straightforward what he's singing about here, but I think it's odd that J kicked Lou out of Dinosaur Jr, even after Lou gave him a shout out in this song. The wikipedia entry for Sebadoh makes it sound like J kicked him out for having a side-project. |

Joy Division – Dead Souls Lyrics
|
Maybe he's talking about the torment and frustration of wanting to be more than he was and be larger than life. "Figures from the past stand tall and mocking voices ring the halls" - People he idolized seem to stand tall and proud, while he's taunted by self-doubt and frustration.
"They keep calling me" - that longing for accomplishment won't leave him alone. |

That's an interesting take on it swallowedthefly. Reading the lyrics after your interpretation, I can see how your take on it makes sense.
To me, I think Mo is singing from the point of view of someone who has just been dumped and wants to hide out in her room, nursing her broken heart. |

The Cure – The Lovecats Lyrics
|
I read that this song was based on a short story called "the love cats" about an unwanted litter of kittens that were put into a sack and drowned in a pond. They were in the sack playing, not knowing the fate that lay ahead for them. That's why the song sounds so happy and the piano winds down as they drown. This song brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. |

Butthole Surfers – Jingle Of A Dog's Collar Lyrics
| 15 years ago
|
I always thought the jingle of a dog's collar would sound good at that particular point in the song, so you'd imagine what it would sound like. Maybe Gibby wanted to add a dog's collar to the mix, but they wouldn't let him, so he wanted to point out that it belonged there.
The rest of the lyrics seem to be about heroin, so maybe Gibby sees himself as conditioned like Pavlov's dogs. |

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Aeroplane Lyrics

That's a really good point candie1112! As a side note I read that Anthony went with Bob Forrest to see Jane's Addiction (when they recorded their live album) and he and Bob both felt like they should give up music because they couldn't see themselves ever being as good as what they'd seen. Maybe that's a reference to that night as the music sounded sweet but the feeling afterward was sour, and Dave Narvarro probably still had some sweet and sour feelings about his time in Jane's. |

A most astute observation Polak! I was noticing that "Pleasure spiked with pain" lyric implying heroin too. I think he's acknowledging the pain he hides from with heroin and trying to remind himself that music can be a comfort. |

Public Enemy – Burn Hollywood Burn Lyrics

I haven't seen any Ice Cube movies where he's played any of the roles they're talking about in this song. He's never played a butler or servant, and I don't think he ever would. Even in Are We There Yet? or Are We Done Yet? he's playing the role of a man who steps up and acts as a father to kids who aren't his. I think it's awesome that he's taken a role that he knew some people would give him shit for. |

Public Enemy – Brothers Gonna Work It Out Lyrics

Totally agree with Smoulder on this one. It's also directed at the powers that be. He's saying that the black community is willing to work towards unity if the authorities will actually listen and be willing to work things out. The black community has a few demands they would like to bring to the table as well "Get paid the right way, in full, no bull). |

The Flaming Lips – A Spoonful Weighs a Ton Lyrics
| 15 years ago
|
I think it's a total sci-fi song where Wayne's imagined an apocalyptic scenerio of the sun closing in on the earth. Scientists carry out a theory that saves mankind. The public are skeptical and ready to meet their maker when to their amazement, they discover that the scientists theory was correct and humanity is saved. The "Spoonful Weighs a Ton" reference may be in regards to the density of the sun (as inhumandecency described). Perhaps the title is something the skeptics would say "It'll never work! You know how heavy the sun is? A spoonful weighs a ton!" |

The Flaming Lips – ******* Lyrics

My next door neighbour just moved into a nursing home, so her son and daughter were cleaning out the place. They were giving all this stuff away for free. I helped them move some chairs out of the basement and they gave me a nativity scene. I opened the box and a candy cane fell out with a plastic jesus attached. It made me think of this song.
I don't think Wayne dislikes religious people. I think he's sort of puzzled by the role religion plays in their lives because he can't relate to it. |

The Flaming Lips – Chewin' the Apple of Your Eye Lyrics

I think this song is about someone who goes to a flaming lips concert. They aren't really a fan of the band or familiar with their music, they went with their friend or significant other and got separated from them. The person feels sad and out of place but decides to make the best of it. |

I saw a show where they discussed the Paul is Dead hoax, and they referred to the "nobody was really sure if he was from the house of lords". They said that after the alleged crash, Paul's body was seen by people on the scene and thought he looked vaguely familiar, but they weren't sure from where because of his disfigurement. |

Jane's Addiction – 1% Lyrics

I don't know if it's relevant to the song, but 1% is also term used by the Hell's Angels. They consider themselves to be the 1% that have rejected society's values and are doing their own thing. I think this is Perry's way of embracing that concept of individuality

Syd Barrett – Baby Lemonade Lyrics
|
THat's a brilliantly thought through and written assessment. I've never thought about Syd not wanting to play outside of London. That explains his tendancy to sabatoge American shows and TV appearances by not playing.
I think there were certain aspects to Floyd's early success (being able to wear fancy clothes and put mirrors on his guitar, and make a living hanging out with the people at the UFO club.)
I don't think Syd suffered from anything other than a glamourized nervous breakdown. Pink Floyd turned it into mythology by mentioning his "madness" in songs (ie: Brain Dammage, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, etc).
He was a brilliant artist. |

The Lemonheads – You Can Take It With You Lyrics
| 15 years ago
|
I think it's called "You CAN take it with you". To me the song is about dropping out of society and rejecting everything that you've been told. For example "You MUST talk to strangers when you visit a new park" and "You CAN be too rich and you CAN be too thin." People often say in regards to worldly possessions "you can't take it with you" but Evan's take is that you can take the thing with you that's most important. |
