Your explanation is low on the ladder of love. It is barely even on it.

This song is what it is like to talk to God. Sex? *sigh*

The line “you move your own mountain” is directly referring to Christ when he said “Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.‘“

The man is passing from this fallen realm. He is going home. Home? To heaven. Not a vagina. For fuck’s sake, aspire higher.

On the contrary, it is the Christ singing in this song, buddy. He's angry at the world, and at you.

Observe Isaiah 63:
“I have trodden the wine trough alone,
And from the peoples there was no man with Me.
I also trod them in My anger
And trampled them in My wrath;
And their lifeblood is sprinkled on My garments,
And I stained all My raiment.

For the day of vengeance was in My heart,
And My year of redemption has come.

I looked, and there was no one to help,
And I was astonished and there was no one to uphold;
So My own arm brought salvation to Me,
And My wrath upheld Me.

I trod down the peoples in My anger
And made them drunk in My wrath,
And I poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”

Cheers ^_^.

This song could just as easily be seen as being about Satan, the Lord of this World (another Black Sabbath song). If any of you saying this is against God had any idea about the message of Christ and how much Black Sabbath's messages align thematically with what he preached (see After Forever), you'd be done with your edge fest against him and realize just how wrong you are.

Virtually all of Soundgarden's songs have Biblical themes, so your suggestion to "stop with the Biblical nonsense" is quite asinine.

It's about far more than that, buddy.

@[fnava21:19045]
God doesn't want us to save ourselves or even try to because he knows we can't do it alone, that we need him as well. So really, your interpretation makes no sense.

However, examining it from the perspective of Satan, it makes perfect sense. For Satan is the current "lord of this world" (see "Lord of this World, Black Sabbath, see "Satan, Your Kingdom Must Come Down, Robert Plant's Band of Joy).

The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God (2 Corinthians 4:4)

Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out (John 12:31).

He [Jesus] knew what they were thinking and said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand. If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then will his kingdom stand?"

Satan is the one who wants us to try and save ourselves, because like God, he knows we can't, and if we can't, we belong to him. And it is here, in this time, that your life is like a laundry room you're living in, because you are under his power.

Soundgarden – No Wrong No Right Lyrics 8 years ago
This song is a criticism on the subjectively moral society we've created, where essentially "everything is permissible, there's no such thing as morality".

Soundgarden takes a different stance: there are morals and codes of ethics we as humans MUST abide by, for our own sake, and the sake of others, and they are not subjective. These are objective.

This song emphasizes how in our society there's "no wrong, no right". It's the rule of the "animal", which is barbaric and unevolved. The song emphasizes this most succinctly with the last line, "you've been bitten", which is an allusion to the serpent in the garden of Eden. Yep. You've been bitten.

That may be true, but Brock is still fucking ignorant. He's a man.

He said this once:

O: Do you still consider yourself an atheist?

IB: "Pretty much, but there are things that make me think. Like that guy who played Jesus [Jim Caviezel] getting hit by lightning during the filming of that movie? That just makes you think, "I can't be 100 percent sure." But I'm not going to change my game plan anyway. I don't think I'm living wrong in the first place, so when the lights go out on me, and brighter ones come on and I have to talk to some guy with a big, bushy beard, or some big glowing blob, I think I'm going to be fine. I'm 100 percent on the whole Christianity thing being a crock of shit, pretty much, but I don't give a fuck if other people are religious. Believe what you want. Whatever makes the day easier for you."

In other words, he acknowledges his ignorance, and rejects the fiasco that many people have turned religion and spirituality into, but he's still open minded enough to consider divine things. I think his music reflects that, and just saying "OH IM AN ATHEIST" is just another way of saying "I'm just ignorant of these things and lack faith and conviction in divine virtue because I'm blinded by the hypocrites of religion and think that's what they are and I want nothing to do with it".

How do I know? Because I used to walk around proudly labeling myself an agnostic atheist until I realized how fucking stupid it was to do so.

Black Sabbath – Under The Sun Lyrics 8 years ago
You people are ignorant if you think this song is assaulting a belief in Christ or faith. It's more like an assault on hypocritical belief systems, and worldliness.

If you believe it is an assault on Jesus Christ, for example, go give "After Forever" a listen on the previous album.

It's funny how people always mention "I don't want no Jesus Freak to tell me what it's all about" line, but neglect the next line that says "No black magician telling me to get my soul out". In other words, both systems are hypocritical and wrong.

This makes sense when you realize that Christ was killed by the Pharisees, a group of hypocritical religious zealots. Yeah, sure, the Romans carried out the execution, but who do you think handed him over to the Romans? Pilate didn't even want to do it at first.

Start thinking beyond your inner biases.

I would say pretty spot on. I have been with the love of my life for the last two and a half years. I've only been with two women ever in my life, intimately. It's not that I couldn't have had more women, I just refuse to lay with any woman I am not willing to love and devote myself to.

Well she cheated on me with three dudes from her job. But because of her very troubled life and upbringing (and I'm talking some seriously fucked up shit), I can't stop loving her, thinking about her, obsessing over her. I am doing it right now and listening to this song.

The one thing I found wrong in your interpretation is the "i'll see you in hell verse".

He really will see her in hell, not because he is also there, on the contrary. He is looking from above, down at her, and sending her a message of love still yet.

Soundgarden – Beyond the Wheel Lyrics 9 years ago
@[tautai:3018]

Interesting interpretation but your quite off base on a few things. First of all, Soundgarden are not doomladen harbingers of Satan. They are not Satanic.

They do not worship the Devil, unless ofc you take Cornell yelling "Jesus is my friend" here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gh20q3Dx8RI (singing this exact song mind you) to be "Satan", which if you do, you are quite daft, or deaf.

Secondly, God does not let evil go unpunished. The world is inherently evil, along with things of the world, because evil has been allowed to corrupt it to give us humans the ability to choose. It ultimately comes down to choosing between love, and love of God (who is love, and goodness, and all that entails), or choosing what has always been done, what we do, the things you talk about actually.

It's not a message from the Devil. I don't know why would think the devil himself would be critical of himself. This makes no fucking sense.

Black Sabbath – Lord Of This World Lyrics 9 years ago
As others have echoed here, this song is obviously about worldliness, and human beings who so often succumb to its ways.

The ways of the world being thus: Hatred of others, lack of love, no compassion or empathy. Selfishness. Materialism. An unrelenting desire for sensual pleasure. Pride, arrogance, and egotistical ways of thinking. Patriotism, nationalism, warmongering, etc. These things are not of God, but of the evil one, who in Abrahamic theology tends to be Satan.

This song is about a rejection of the divine and Godliness, and embrace of the evil one's kingdom.

Indeed, great song.

Soundgarden – Christi Lyrics 9 years ago
In my mind, this song only makes sense if you consider Christ. I believe it to be written from the perspective of Christ. Cornell has even had concerts where he yells "Jesus is my friend". If you watch on youtube, there's a video of them before they're about to play Beyond the Wheel in Germany in 1991 I believe and he's singing this. Combine that with his catholic upbringing, and many of the themes of Soundgarden, and it makes sense. Much of Christ's message was of non-conformity to this world, and the way of things. Christ was labelled as a demon and a follower such by the religious authorities of his day. How often do you hear these types of songs in a "christian" church? :p There's a huge hypocrisy in the modern times in regards to Christ's true message of the world. I think Soundgarden gets it, and harnesses it in songs like this one, "Hands all Over", "Beyond the Wheel", "Limo Wreck", "New Damage", "Holy Water", "Mind Riot", "Blow Up the Outside World", the list goes on and on. ^_^

Soundgarden – 4th of July Lyrics 10 years ago
I'd like to echo what others have said about this being primarily about American pride, but to add further on.

It's really quite strange that in this country, we have a large population of those who profess to be Godly, or followers of God, yet in the same breath exude arrogance and pride in the "American" way of life, as the superior way of life above all others, that ever were, are, or ever will be. It's even stranger, considering the Bible is quite literally chock full of verses warning people about the dangers of arrogance, pride, and hatefulness. Three things which abound in the minds of many Americans these days.

It's a dark, dark, dark thing. It's shameful. It's hypocritical, and it's sad. This song captures this quite well. This song, like many of Soundgarden's songs, Pearl Jam, or Black Sabbath even, seem to carry a warning. A warning to people to change their attitudes, not to be nipped in the butt by the beast.

Look at the lyrics in this song:

"Pale in the flare light
The scared light cracks and disappears
And leads the scorched ones here
And everywhere no one cares
The fire is spreading
And no one wants to speak about it
Down in the hole
Jesus tries to crack a smile
Beneath another shovel load"

The scorched ones? Who or what is this alluding to? To me, the scorched ones can refer to forces of evil, that exist out there in the cosmos, or even here now. Call them demons if you will, it really matters not. The fire is spreading? Of course it is, it is our pride and arrogance, or holier than thou attitudes, and our spiteful, hateful ways whilst at the same time proclaiming the love of God that is spreading the fire. It is US that is spreading it, not God. When the New Damage comes (another one of soundgarden's tracks) and the Limo Wreck happens (again...) then we have only ourselves to blame, not our creator! Why don't more people understand this? It really is quite sad. Soundgarden gets it. Jesus forewarned it, but, as this song points out...

Right now, he's sad. Just as he was then. He's trying to crack a smile, beneath another shovel load of our bullshit. Time to change the paradigm brothers and sisters.

Soundgarden – Searching with My Good Eye Closed Lyrics 10 years ago
Just to echo some of the sentiments here, some are fairly correct. However, the whole "devil" thing in the beginning, the pyramid on Badmotorfinger, the good eye closed shit, etc, that the one guy was alluding to is bull. This song isn't about Satan/Lucifer persay, it's about trying to make sense of this warped reality as thisisthegoodstuff pointed out.

The beginning essentially is comparing Satan to a pack of animals. You hear these various animals, and what they sound like, and then you hear the devil. Right? Right. The devil is our animalistic urges. What are those urges? Fear, hate, violence. All these things that lead to chaos and bitterness between people.

The bulk of the song is trying to deal with this world. Sure, our life circumstances may be better off that someone elses somewhere, but some of us have this thing, called empathy. I know every day of my life, and I don't let myself forget, that somewhere, someone's best friend died (just like he says in Mind Riot) or that a man was just executed for whatever reason (none good). You know, it's fucked up. What can we do, just look for the paradigm. Just keep looking, and hoping. Chris wonders where its at, "is it to the sky?" The paradigm is that which will save us from this madness. It's clear that Chris believes in Christ, he says Jesus is my friend quite a bit. It's a clear indicator in this song that the band, like many of us, is looking for this peace.

"Looking for a pedestal
That I can put you on
And be on my way"

They're basically saying here, "look, whatever man, you want this power, privilege, and the pulpit? Go ahead, take it, leave me alone. Just leave me out of your BS."

The thing is, it's getting harder and harder to avoid the BS these days guys, but hang in there. Help is on the way.

Led Zeppelin – Kashmir Lyrics 10 years ago
Everyone has been wrong. This song is an allusion to the "Kingdom of Heaven", of God essentially. It's real. It's out there, and it's not on the Earth--not yet anyway, not in full force. By its very nature, not being of this world, it is extraterrestrial. We have brothers and sisters among the stars out there, oh yes, we do. These are referenced to as elders of the gentle race in the first stanza. A clear indicator of the line "this world has seldom seen" is what happens to people who exude these gentle, harmonious qualities: They usually end up dead. Christ, Gandhi, Lincoln, MLK Jr., the Kennedy brothers, Lennon, etc. Indeed, most of the song is a reflection on how deceived and decrepit this human society has been and still is throughout the ages. It is a damn awful shame, and Led Zeppelin knows the truths of cosmic love and peace, and proclaims to help take us there, essentially into the welcoming hands of God's kingdom.

C'mon people, Led Zep goes beyond these mere mortal worldly interpretations so many of you have espoused here.

You know, you could just as easily flip it around and call these fallen angels (demons) you speak of, the angels of Christ's army at the end days coming for all the unrighteous. For is it not also said that God's wrath will pour down upon all those who oppose the truth that's in Christ's message?

You see, it swings both ways. The difference is between the righteous and unrighteous.

"The Devil mocks their every step" could allude to the fact that the Devil is mocking Heaven by his very Rebellion here. Of course he would mock the Army of the righteous and of Heaven. Why would he not?

Soundgarden – Room a Thousand Years Wide Lyrics 10 years ago
Some people have said this song is about Satan, I disagree. If anything, I think it's about Jesus. Chris himself has said many times in concert that "Jesus Christ is his friend". Also, if you read the lyrics and meanings behind a lot of Cornell's songs from Soundgarden and Temple of the Dog (Hunger Strike for example), they have a very religious theme/feel to them. Very moral and Biblical in nature. SG captures the anger and wrath that God feels towards man's current condition very well I think.

This verse could just as easily be Christ, after all does Christ lie? No. Satan does. Is it not also said that Christ lives with us, those of us who wish to hear his message? Think about it friends. Christ would not deceive us, and Soundgarden's messages have always been more related to the messages of Christ then the deceitful, greedy, exploitative ways of Satan.

"Listen, hear he is inside
One who lives while others lie
I close my eyes and walk a thousand years
A thousand years that aren't mine"

It's not about the end of the world. It's about the end of a village, being raided by God-preaching knights who are deceived by Satan. The song is told from the perspective of villagers running for their lives. Such things were common place, and still are in many places of the world. Just look up the Massacre of Soissons or Jerusalem in 1099.
