i mean the fact that the song title references a religious cult only further implicates the idea that the song is anti-religion. religious cults are typically recognized as sects of overly pious or brainwashed zealots who are blinded by their fanatic devotion and often act unreasonably and dangerously. cults are pretty much the symbol of religion gone wrong.
i think this song goes with the whole album's anti-religious message that religious texts and leaders are hypocritical at best and malicious at worst. the album really explores the contradictions and dangers of religion and this song caps it off nicely. |

i think this song's meaning is kind of a culmination to the album's theme: the realization that heaven and God are all around us. heaven isn't some far-off place and God is in everything (like "that neon sign"). only now can the narrator stop worrying about Timothy in the afterlife and find some rest, beckoning "come now sleep". |

i think that portugal is likening the hunting of the wolves in alaska to the music industry. both the hunters and the producers are interested only in final results: money. the hunters are destroying the beauty of the landscape by ridding it of an interesting part of nature and mainstream music is taking away the beauty and creativity and poeticism of money. when portugal asks 'would you use only blues' to paint the river, they are pointing out that there is no much more going on than just the general color of the river, there's a lot more beauty to the river than just blue.

i think this song is about how people just watch other people without making any attempt to get to know them. it's easier to just keep to yourself and observe others and you can fill in facts about them as you see fit.
