| To me, this song is about losing yourself in a relationship. "She is a pyramid, but with him she's just a grain of sand". Normally she is strong willed and independent but within the relationship she's lost a part of herself and is just a shadow of what she used to be . I especially like the part "Yeah I used to be a shell, I let him rule my world", especially because I was in a situation similar to this..I relied all my happiness on him and essentially let him rule my world even though he didn't treat me very well. We aren't together anymore, and I'm slowly getting my pearl back, and I feel great and better off without him. Realize your self-worth, and the fact that YOU rule your world and your happiness! | |

| Despite the fact that it is a repetitious song & has definitely been overplayed, its a good song with a simple message. Mayer didn't need thousands of lines and metaphors to express his message; its plan and simple, just say what you need to say. Don't hold your feelings or thoughts and don't let them become bottled up inside you. Even if you don't receive the answer you want, its better to have let everything off your chest and clear your head, convey your thoughts and let people know how you feel rather than wondering "what if". | |

One of my favorite Mayer songs. Once again he demonstrates his great ability to express heartbreak and despair perfectly to music. To me, this song is definitely about some sort of sudden breaking up, or drifting apart of two people for no real reason. He feels hurt, knows shes probably gone due to the fact she hasn't called him up or anything, yet there's that bit of hope he has that she feels the same way, the same sadness. "One hand on the trigger of the telephone Wonderin when the call comes, when you say it's all right You got your heart right" I love this part. She still hasn't called him, and he's still dreaming that she's thinking about him and will call one day to tell him she realizes this has all been a mistake and misses him. He's getting desperate, so he's tempted to make the first move, but doesn't want to. The phone is like a trigger of a gun; if he calls and he doesn't get the answer he wants, that call pretty much kills any hope he had left, so its better not to call. "And it stings when it nobody's fault Cause there's nothing to blame At the drop of your name, it's only the air you took And the breath you left" There's no real reason to their split, and that's the worst part. How can you mend something that's been split by no apparent reason? What else is there to say? Distance could play a factor, and it could just be because they've drifted apart. "So maybe I'll sleep inside my coat and Wait on the porch til you come back home, alright" Who hasn't felt so desperate to see the one you miss that you'd sleep outside in front of their porch? Just knowing that action alone could bring them back or atleast give you the chance to see that person would be worthwhile. "So I'll check the weather wherever you are Cause I wanna know if you can see the stars tonight Might be my only right" In a sense, when you're not communicating with the one you miss, the weather can give you some sort of glimpse into some aspect of their life. You still want them to see the stars, to have a bit of magic in their life. They may be far away but atleast you'll know how it is over there where they are. "We share the sadness (two wrongs make it all alright tonight) Split screen sadness" Having the feeling that the other person feels similarly gives you some sort of hope. It reassures that longing feeling is happening for a reason if the other person is feeling the same way. "I called... because... I just... need to feel you on the line Don't hang up this time" Who hasn't been tempted to call the one who got away? Even if you call and not say a word, just knowing that they're on the other end gives you some sort of satisfaction, just having their presence there makes it worthwhile. "And I know well it's me who called it over but I still wish you fought me 'til my dying day Don't let me get away" Heartbreaking. How could you give up so easily? Did I really not mean that much to you? I know I haven't called, but why haven't you? Both are stubborn. He just wishes she would've fought harder for him so he could confirm this split screen sadness. Maybe he's actually alone in the sadness after all. He might move on one day but he still wishes she hadn't let him get away. He still wants her in his life. Beast song, Mayer. |

I love this song. Its heartbreaking yet hopeful at the same time. Basically describes my life at the moment. Love is like a wheel; it keeps turning, no matter what, and the cycle goes on and on. You fall in love, face heartbreak, and yet, despite everything, you fall back in love again and go through that same cycle or wheel. To me, the song describes a point in which he realizes this cycle. As much as it hurts, he won't be the last to love her and she won't be the last to love him and he knows it. Additionally, he also has a little bit of hope. Knowing that the wheel will keep turning, he still hopes someday she'll come around and want to open the cycle again. |

This song has captured every damn emotion I've felt these past few weeks. This has been the only song I have been listening to, as well as other of John Mayer's pieces, esp "Wheel." I definitely agree with every part of your analysis on Mayer's lyrics. You're not alone, I feel the same way. It sucks. It hurts. I just want him to call me up and tell me he misses me, tell me he has feeling horrible these past few weeks as well. The call isn't coming though, and I'm losing hope. "I still wish you fought me till your dying day..don't let me get away..." I don't know if there's a reason I responded to you. Just wanted to let you know your description is perfect, and I hope you feel better... and I hope we both get some closure on our situations. Best wishes. |

| I really like this song. To me, its about a person who is just trying to forget someone, not because he wants to, but because he feels as if the person has already forgotten about him; whether it is a direct perception or simply based on the fact that the person has drifted away and has had little communication with him. he's obviously hurt by the situation, and has been just living life day to day trying to get over the person. just when he starts to think life is getting better and the thoughts of said person are becoming less, the person calls him out of the blue. this is both a curse and a blessing; of course he's happy she's called him, but yet again, the pain is coming back and he's left in that cycle of trying to get over her again. i can def relate. | |

if anyone needs a song to relate to/help them move on, this is the song. i've recently been in a similar situation, and I just can't stop playing this song. somehow the song combines the beauty and pain of a relationship. its obvious as to what this song is about; a doomed relationship, the moment in time where both people realize that love is just not enough, the relationship is falling no matter how much they try and save it. they're just slow dancing in a burning room; trying to save the beauty in the relationship, despite their surroundings, and despite the fact that it really is over. john mayer is amazing. |

| This is one of my favorite Third Eye Blind songs. I interpret this song as something nearly everyone goes through...feeling as if you are fading into the background of someone else's life who was very important to you. Its a very painful thing to experience, knowing that you are no longer relevant or "in the spotlight" of the person that means the world to you, and being left with that numbness. Years can go by, flings can happen, ye that person always somehow creeps their way back into your mind. Its a very heartbreaking situation. | |

I've been going through a similar situation, this song has definitely helped me a lot. Obviously, the song is about moving on and letting go of the person he once loved. In a sense, the song is a way to convince himself that he is better without the person, and the "straightjacket" feeling he has been in. He is moving on, slowly but surely, one day at a time, and is convinced the only way to hold on is to let go of the person he once loved, even though it hurts. Even though the other person may want to sneak into his life again, he knows much better this time, today he's fine without her. |
