A Perfect Circle – Thomas Lyrics | 7 years ago |
This song is from the perspective of (Doubting) Thomas the Apostle, also known as 'The Twin', after the crucifixion and before Jesus has risen. The first verse demonstrates Thomas' helplessness without Jesus direction and has a reference to John 14:5 where Thomas asks how they will know the way and Jesus says he is the light and the way. The second verse is Thomas reconciling the act of Jesus self-sacrifice with his personal loss of friend, brother, and saviour. No small task, that. The third verse is a prayer for guidance and to be illuminated by the light (and the way), to know where to begin to heal. The fourth verse expresses Thomas desire to be one with Jesus, his Twin, again, to reconnect with him, as Thomas is the only one who can and does touch the risen Christ. |

I don't know what crystal ball Elfman had in his possession, but this is clearly a prophetic vision of the Bush administration. The themes of sheople willingly submitting their intellect to sacrifice at the 57-channel altar ring true as ever in the age of Palin. |
Oingo Boingo – Perfect System Lyrics | 15 years ago |
It's about the costs of living under a totalitarian government (communism, fascism, capitalism, doesn't matter) and the sacrifice of self required of individuals in such a society. A common theme for Mr. Elfman who clearly read Orwell, Kafka, Huxley, and other dystopian visions of 'perfect systems'. |

In a fit of fractal irony, you've gone and overanalyzed the song... Consider the possibility that our senses are the thing which is limiting us from our potential divinity...a demi-urge veiling the gnosis we could see/become, if we'd only stop trying to see it with our simple tools of black, white, red, yellow, etc |
Tool – Lateralus Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Lateral (to) Us could be a representation of something that is already there which we have yet to develop the capacity to 'see' (in the Carlos Castaneda sense of the word). |

"Black then white are all I see in my infancy. red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me. lets me see." You may wish to consider this in terms of the development of the primate visual processing systems. Black and white (no color) Red and yellow (the earliest colors we monkeys could see) http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=evolution-of-primate-color-vision The "infinite possibilities" would be a reference to the entire light spectrum. |

"It was an evening I shared with the sun To find out where we belong" An LSD trip. "From the earliest days We were dancing in the shadows" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allegory_of_the_Cave "More wine Because I got to have it More skin Because I got to eat it" We are inherently sinful, due to our nature. "Inside the outside By the river Used to be so calm Used to be so sane" Siddhartha Gautama found the outside by a river... "I rushed the ladies' room Took the water from the toilet Washed her feet and blessed her name" Luke 7 verse 38: "and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and began to wash His feet with tears and wiped them with the hair of her head, and kissed His feet and anointed them with the ointment." "More peace Is such a dirty habit" Judas, always looking to use the sword...so sad. "Slow down, we're too afraid" Post 9/11 state of mind anyone? "Let me ride Let me ride Burn my eyes Let me ride" Give me the will to resist temptation, Lord, but not yet, not yet... |
