Kings of Leon – Closer Lyrics 14 years ago
You're right it is 2000 years. You could hear it clearly in the song:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8AvtYJDBoA&feature=player_embedded

I agree with you. I think its possibly about losing faith - love. Especially after reading this:

"Three brothers and a cousin, all aged between 16 and 23, they were raised as traveling Pentecostals and dragged from Memphis to Oklahoma City and just about everywhere in between by their defrocked preacher daddy, Leon Followill, who also happened to be an alcoholic. Along the way, they slept in cars, trailers and churches and were tutored by whoever was along for the ride."

"Although the Kings of Leon have rejected their Christian upbringing, religion is ever-present - "The Lord's gonna get us back, I know, I know," Caleb rasps in "Holy Roller Novocaine"

In some pictures I see Caleb wearing cross necklaces. I think the song has a lot to do with his struggle of faith while simultaneously experiencing the pain of being brought up by a dysfunctional father who is also deeply religious.

I noticed above it said "200 years" instead of 2000. The right lyrics are "2000 years of chasing taking its toll" I think it's more of a reference to Jesus Christ than a vampire. They aren't religious now, but these guys have pentecostal roots - so that would make sense.

I haven't read any of the other replies, so I have no idea if anyone thinks the same way, but that's just my take on it, by no means fact.

Regina Spektor – Eet Lyrics 14 years ago
This is just a opinion borne out of speculation (not fact) but this is my take on it. I think this song is heavily spiritual. Buckle down if you care to listen, it's long.

"It's like forgetting the words to your favorite song.
You can't believe it, you were always singing along.
It was so easy and the words so sweet.
You can't remember; you try to feel the beat.

You spend half of your life trying to fall behind.
You're using your headphones to drown out your mind.
It was so easy and the words so sweet.
You can't remember; you try to move your feet."

Those verses above sound like a person who either a) pursued a talent they had only to find that it no longer gave them joy or b) has no purpose in life. They find themselves in a circumstance where they are no longer motivated (it has become hard for this person to "move their feet" or "feel the beat"). Maybe their purpose in life only turned out to be a fleeting interest.

In the chorus she sings:

"Bee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-
Eet eet eet.
Ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-
Eet eet eet."

Ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-
Eet eet eet.
Ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-
Eet eet eet."

I'm not sure if the spelling holds any significance but I'm going to ignore it for now. I think she is referring to the word beat (the sound) and not beet (the vegetable). In this instance, maybe the person she is singing about discovers their purpose in life involves "beats" both spiritually and literally. If the song was about her, it could refer to her love of music (her purpose). Regina is clever. She takes the word and turns it into it's own definition. She also indicates that the beat is what feeds their soul when she sings: Bee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee Eeeet (eat) Eeeet (eat) Eeeet (eat). Your soul finds fulfillment in joy, passion, and love.

The religion she was influenced by makes references to times where you are spiritually walking in a desert. In her music video she is in a desert. We could assume that the person she is singing about feels like they are lost, empty, parched, or starving inside. But by finding their purpose (or beat) in life, they finds a means of survival, they can "eet", and nourish themselves back to health to continue their spiritual walk out of the desert. Again, the idea that our purpose in life (the thing which we are most passionate about and truly love) feeds our soul. When love fills your soul, your soul produces love. And by producing love, you are glorifying God.

"Someone's deciding whether or not to steal.
He opens a window just to feel the chill.
He hears that outside a small boy just started to cry
Cause it's his turn, but his brother won't let him try."

I think this verse is metaphorical. The impression I get is that she's trying to describe how this person feels like they are hopeless or dead inside (He opens a window just to feel the chill) that they are considering making a bad choice (to steal). How can a person steal in a barren desert? Think about the difference between choosing to follow a road just to survive instead of following a road of love. Choosing the easier road (the road of survival) can be considered "stealing". It can either be construed as a person intervening in another person's walk of life - and ultimately purpose - or not following God's way, thus robbing the world of love you could have produced for other people.

No one's laughing at God
We're all laughing with God....

I'm going to lean toward the opinion that this is a pro-God song.
Regina makes many good points in this verse, I think two of them are:

a) How by mocking God we are mocking ourselves.
b) How gracious God is. He doesn't just put up with us, he understands how we think and as a result passes off our insults as humor.

God is the author of life. Without life there would be nothing. If he wished to do so he could wipe us off the face of the earth, which is a humbling thought. He could take away everything he's created - gravity, oxygen, food, water - anything vital to our survival.

Meanwhile, here we are with our pre-conceived notions and false sense of control, mocking God to his face. A God who we rely on for everything and who personally gave us these traits, personalities, and needs.

Imagine for a minute that you had the ability to make creatures think and speak for themselves. You decided to give these abilities to two ants crawling in the palm of your hand. The ants can't see your face because they're very small and you are too big. Wouldn't it be ridiculous if you heard the ant you gave the ability to talk tell it's companion that the idea of you is ridiculous, when in your reality the idea of a talking ant is ridiculous.

I once asked a good friend of mine who was an atheist out of genuine curiosity, "How is it that you find the will to live? If your idea of life is enjoying the moment and doing what you can? Why do you want to keep going if you know that one day you'd just stop existing?" (I asked this because I was battling major depression and suicide and the only thing that kept me hanging on was the idea that if I tried to fight my battle as much as I could, God would be proud and I'd have the afterlife to look forward to.

As much as I like this song...I think he is referring to the hypocrisy of the christian life.

Basically going by some of the references in the music video:

a)The group of of people holding the "end is near" sign. The one in the front is holding a bible.
a The overdressed, overzealous, people who resemble little more than robots holding a "faith lives" sign.
b)Everyone in this video is depicted as perfect and all american, but they're wearing fake smiles. Certain clips appear to distort, portraying them as "twisted people".
c)The 1-800-Truth ad that flashes on the t.v screen for an instant
e)The old woman checking out the muscle man doing push ups and looks like she's uh, masturbating.

Anyway I can relate. I used to think that way about christians, even though I am one.
Although I learned the hard way that I was no less hypocritical for believing to be any better.

I agree with people whose posts indicated this song was being afraid, struggling with adapting to this world, or having panic attacks. I have problems in these areas and the song gave me that vibe.

I also think this song could be about a person who struggles in life with trust and paranoia:

"I tremble
They're gonna eat me alive
If I stumble
They're gonna eat me alive"

"hard to be soft, tough to be tender"

I agree. My Grandpa had this song played in his funeral, and although I loved him, he was a very proud and at times cruel and hardened man.

Sorry to bring any religious view in it, but I think this song is like a slap in the face to God. Especially the ending lyrics:

"For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught.
To say the things he truly feels;
And not the words of one who kneels.
The record shows I took the blows -
And did it my way!"

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet... but I was just wondering about the meaning of the six feet in his lyrics

Hold me now
I'm six feet from the edge and I'm thinking
That maybe six feet
Ain't so far down

Does he mean six feet as in six feet under, like being dead/buried in a coffin?

Counting Crows – Colorblind Lyrics 14 years ago
The singer sounds like a very spiritual and extremely introverted person.

"I am covered in skin
No one gets to come in
Pull me out from inside
I am folded
And unfolded
And unfolding"

Well, the song is called colorblind and the music video is filmed in black and white...Maybe he is in a state of mind where he feels indifferent and apathetic towards life, like nothing in it can affect him anymore (from having being hurt to such a degree where he doesn't understand how to open up?) and so he resorts to watching other people live (as the woman is doing in the music video) while a bland and colorless life passes him by...

Or maybe it's not and I'm just trying to identify this song with my personal feelings.

This song always makes me cry so bad! Espesially the part that goes:

By your side, scared to death
Felt the pain, you were fighting
Placed my palm on your head
Spoke your name, just keep trying

I know it might be about different things, but I'll always think of it as my dog's song.

Depeche Mode – Blasphemous Rumours Lyrics 15 years ago
I wholeheartedly agree with depechevixxen.

I've been through just...COMPLETE bullshit the last couple of years. One step away from being instituitionalized. I've heard, "where is your loving God now," from others - while I now sit here wondering the same thing.

Sorry I can't go to church and be full of passion I don't feel!!! Sorry that I'm not ms. optimist!!! Sorry for being human damnit!!

WTF?!?! Although I am far from perfect and pretty fucked up in the head (pretty much just like everyone else) I can't understand God at all. I am angry. Angry that he keeps on taking the people I love away. Angry that he. Angry that he made us with these desires and makes us deal with the responsibility of making a choice, when in retrospect we know nothing about this universe compared to him!!!! Christians gasp and say "No! God isn't doing this to you!"...well, that might be true but I feel like he is FRIGGIN cruel by allowing this bullshit happen to people who try to seek him out, albeit even if they are completely imperfect.

I am angry at God and don't understand anything that's going on. I feel like I stray away from him just because I feel he is purposefully cruel or playing mindgames with me. He lets his children run around making their own decisions (when he is the God that knows everything and we don't). It's like a mature adult giving a three year old a life or death decision...I just don't understand this!!!

I'm not absolutely sure what this song is about, but it sounds sad, resentful, mocking, hopeful, loving, and bitter all rolled into one.

Also sounds like he's ready to let go of his religion... "it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah"

The Killers – Read My Mind Lyrics 15 years ago
When he's singing in the first verse he's singing these lyrics;

"On the corner of main street
Just tryin' to keep it in line.
You say you wanna move on and
You say I'm falling behind
Can you read my mind"

As if he's getting irritated at the person who is telling him these things because he already knows, hence, "can you read my mind".

I'm feeling a sarcastic and nostalgic vibe on/off throughout the song, but other than that I really have no idea what its about.
