Mark Knopfler – Golden Heart Lyrics 12 years ago
I get the feeling this song is about both a piece of jewelery (golde heart) and a woman. And while he is separated from this woman the heart and the woman are one and the same as the golden heart holds all of their memories and is a constant reminder of their love.

couple of lines that i think show this

"swinging by the bangles in a main street store"

"took a loop of leather from around her neck"

"I would stop it from swinging like a pendulum
Just to hold time in my hand... I'd hold your golden heart"

"And every time I'm thinking of you from a distant shore
And all the time I sleep
I will have a reminder that my baby wore
A part of you to keep"

"I'll wear your golden heart"

i think the whole religion thing is way off i agree with "wintonas" its a grave stone hes asking forgiveness from but its not literal its a simile for intense regret for his actions and their consequences.

if you look at the 3 lines before u can understand it better:

"Did you try to live on your own
When you burned down the house and home?
Did you stand too close to the fire?
Like a liar looking for forgiveness from a stone"

If u take the anti-war line, the house and home represents the institution of the united states or the constitution or whatever, any ethical system really. He thought he was upholding its values but he burnt it to the ground unknowingly. Of course living without some structured ethical system to believe in (living on your own) simply doesn't work.
Now its all well and good to say he was doing the right thing from a distance, but when ur the one burning the house down u realise how misguided u really have been. you get burned also because ur too close (this ties in with the whole "your in ruins" line, referring to his broken spirit and soul).
Finally he compares his remorse to asking for forgiveness from a gravestone, which is of course futile and besides it is far to late to reverse the outcome or change the past.

I think the songs about a man who has had a crisis of faith and is appealing to god to restore his beliefs. Yet he knows deep down that his prayers will go unanswered and that when he dies there will be no pearly gates and St peter will not be calling out names.

The first 3 stanzas all talk of how he once had such confidence in his god, that his prayers would be answered, that he always had god in his corner and that his religion answered the questions of existence But now he feels abandonded and he begins to see that the foundations of his beliefs system (castles) are not as solid as he once thought. He thought he owned the earth (biblical reference "the meek shall inherit the earth") but he realises that he is merely its cartaker and any good he does is not for himself but for the benifit of the next generation in the cycle of life.

The chorus is about how he still sees other believers ringing bells and singing gods praises and asking followers to defend and spread the word of god. This is just the way he used to be, but now he doubts. For some unexplained reason he now sees the word of god as dishonest. He knows deep down that there cannot be any certainty after death. No religion can offer the answer especially such a simplistic one of heaven and hell with no shade of grey.

The next two verses speak of the unknown event which brought about his crisis of faith, shatering the opaque windows through which he once saw the world. He knows it was not a higher being which caused this event but mere chance and fortune, as volatile as the wind. People persecuted him for his loss of faith, (note; people but not god because he isn't real), but he realises that although they think they have the answer these people are searching for guidance where there is none. They are puppets with no puppet master just strings leading nowhere.

finally the name of the song literally means "live life" or "long live life", meaning our lives are ours to do with what we please not the possessions of some higher being. Also it means we should live our lives to the fullest as there may not be any afterlife.

btw I'm an atheist but i like to think i would have had the same interpretation of the song if i wasn't
