This is an amazing song. After I heard it I thought and thought about it constantly for over a month. No joke. Every moment I had where I wasn't working or doing something my mind wondered back to that. It was crazy because never had I had a song effect me like that. I see this song as a hypothetical question: What if you found out you had 24 hours to live? I think it someone realizing how short and unfulfilled their life has been and now that they have a time limit (24 hours) they must make the most of it. At first they are talking about going through the psychological aspect of the severity of this situation (*first verse + bridge). I think they told their lover ("I'm not messing") are breaking up with them ("promise to live free") and just to be there with them to the end. I believe the second verse is the person talking with the (now ex) lover. Questioning God, thinking about everyone they have ever known, how they will never live a normal life. After some time has passed I believe the person begins to think about everything they have said and had no regrets about it because they believe that they could possibly be the only person to ever be in this situation. I also believe the countdown is while all this is going on the person checking the time and is like, "Ok, I have 18 hours, 13 hours, ect left" Thats my take on this. Am I right? who knows |

This is my interpretation, it might be right it might not. Obviously these boys are leaving Missouri. When they were at the little diner and Darius and Noland ate the crawfish which mostly likely came from Louisiana since about 95% of US crawfish come from there. From Lake Pontchartrain, I am not sure, since it is a saltwater lake, but since the song is based around it, it is possible. When they are in the car they are listening to soul music when an advertisement ("Come down to Lake Pontchartrain/ Rest your soul and feed your brain/ That's where you will get to see/ Everything the water can be.") Which to a person not from the area, it would sound kinda strange, but would make you think, "Well, it might be some kind of thing the locals do every year or whatever." Well, as they are driving around they get caught in a storm and pull over trying to find either where they are or where they need to be going when a crazed man runs up to the car and starts screaming about Lake Pontchartrain, oddly enough the same ad from the radio. That scares the hell out of them and so he speeds off and goes down the interstate which is flooded, no shock there since Louisiana is notorious for flooding. So they take the back roads which end up being flooded too. When the road begins to disappear and he slams on the brakes and oddly enough there is a sign saying they are at the lake. All of a sudden Darious start freaking out saying he can see somebody in the water and gets out of the car and Noland follows him. And our guys like, "What the hell..?" When he too heard the voices from the lake, but he is not being drawn to it like his two friend are. He watches in terror as his friends go deeper into the water when it swells up and "swallows them". Now from the beginning of the song it is clear the main guy is telling this story to someone. I would think the police or some sort of authority figure since he says "Anymore questions.." The last line of the song sounds more like he is saying "If you don't believe me, go see for yourself." I have interpreted this song a few different ways: 1) Since Louisiana is like the Voodoo/Hoodoo capital of the US, it is possible that has something to do with it. Maybe if these people do rituals at the lake (spirits or what have you) and the crawfish came from the lake, it called them back to it. Since the lake "swallowed" Darius and Noland maybe it is some sort of ritual to appease the spirits of the lake. 2) The lake is a living creature and the crawfish are pawns to lure people to it. 3) The main guy actually killed Darious and Noland and is coming up with some crazy story while being interrogated. I am not exactly sure, but these are my thoughts. |
