Its about her father, but Gaga likes to keep her songs relatable to everyone (eg telephone is meant to be about the paparazzi) so it can be interpreted as a lover. "I can’t belive what you said to me Last night when we were alone You threw your hands up Baby you gave up, you gave up" her father told her that he wasn't having the surgery, he "gave up" on life. (Throwing your hands up being a sign of surrender) "I can’t believe how you looked at me With your James Dean glossy eyes In your tight jeans with your long hair And your cigarette stained lies" Obviously she finds her father handsome, like James Dean. The "tight jeans" & "long hair" is referencing James Dean, not her father. The metaphor is drawn together with "your cigarette stained lies", both James Dean & her father smoked. "Could we fix you if you broke? And is your punch line just a joke?" Well I think the "could we fix you if you broke?" is kind of a rhetorical question, like the surgery is all that can help him. The "is your punch line just a joke?" may be meaning him saying he wasn't having the surgery. "I’ll never talk again Oh boy you’ve left me speechless You’ve left me speechless, so speechless" She's speechless (obviously) by what her father has said "I can’t believe how you slurred at me With your half wired broken jaw You popped my heart seams On my bubble dreams, bubble dreams" Well he's just basically said he's gonna die & not doing anything about it, if that doesn't burst your bubble & ruin all your dreams then I don't know what would. Also, when you break your jaw you get it wired (idk if it happens to everyone or just bad breaks or whatever), so that what the whole thing with that is. "I can’t believe how you looked at me With your Johnnie Walker eyes He’s gonna get you and after he’s through There’s gonna be no love left to rye" Johnnie Walker is a kind of whiskey, isn't it? So well that's obvious, her father was an alcoholic. Someone above me said something about rye having something to do with whiskey, I don't know anything about it but I'd assume that it means something like he was in love with alcohol or something like that. The "He's gonna get you..." is, in my opinion a personification of Death/disease. "And I know that it’s complicated But I’m a loser in love So baby raise a glass to mend All the broken hearts Of all my wrecked up friends" This is my 2nd favourite part of the song ^__^ I think its saying how people use alcohol to fix their problems "And after all the drinks and bars that we’ve been to Would you give it all up? Could I give it all up for you? And after all the boys and girls that we’ve been through Would you give it all up? Could you give it all up? If I promise boy to you That I’ll never talk again And I’ll never love again I’ll never write a song Won’t even sing along I’ll never love again" Would he give up the cigarettes & alcohol, & undergo the surgery if she promised that she would never sing or love after he's gone. Since singing is Gaga's career, its basically saying she won't live. Its like saying her life won't be worth living without him in it. "Some men may follow me But you choose “death and company” " Well... when I went to Monster Ball, during the song she said "I know alcohol may kill me, but I'd rather not die alone, I'd rather die out drinking with all my friends"... pretty sure that explains the "death & company" thing. Also apparently its a bar? That fits perfectly. Its a double meaning :) This is just what I reckon :] also it might be about him saying he has the illness, not that he's not getting the surgery, but either way everything still pretty much applies the same. |

Wow reading through these coments totally made me think of it in so many different ways. I totally agree that its about a groupie (the "girlscout"). Like the repeated line "if you want it, did you never want for more" to me seems like she (the groupie) always wanted to be 'with' her idol, but never thought about actual love or anything like that. She "fell from grace" because she's sexually involved with her idol & possibly in a bad/abusive relationship, she's lost her innocence as a young girl. It probably refers to loss of virginity. Her idol doesn't feel anything for her, hence they "spit inside her face", and nor does she feel any true love towards them "the numbness that was you" -numbness; lack of feeling. I think the screamy part might be from the girl's point of view. "what would I want, what will I need, to sacrifice what I believe" she gave up everything to be with that person, and lost her innocence. Then the clean singing is from the idol's POV. "Your mouth is getting sore" doesn't have to be about blowjobs, but it still could be. I think there's more than one layer to alot of lyrics, and that's just the surface. Beneath that, there's the idea of lying, also physical pain from abuse. "Would you love me any less if I hurt you any more?" well its like a rhetorical question because she doesn't love them, so they can use & abuse her. That could also be seen as fan love, or that they're trying to push her away by abusing her. Then the next verse is her trying to get her innocence back, "cleansing every sore" there's a reference to girlscout cookies or whatever "sold from door to door" like doing anything she can to get that back. Then "finish what you start" like she's still with that person "dehumanize my heart" I think that's one of the most important lines. It could be referring to either of them (probably both), they've been "Dehumanized" by this relationship & the way they've both acted/been treated. Then the 3rd verse could be the Girl singing, like she's finally grown up & decided to take a stand. "I was never your number 1 fan" She's saying she hates the person, will never think highly of them (she denies ever having 'loved' them) "How can I grow a girl when you never were a man?" The idea of a lesbian relationship & wanting a baby fits well with this line, but I think its more her growing as a girl rather than producing a girl. And "man" doesn't necessarily refer to a male, the word man can be used to show who's the "bigger person" if you know what I mean?? (Sorry I really can't think of how to word it atm) and they were never a man, just a person. It could also be a reference to the line "dehumanize my heart" because that would mean they aren't a "man" (as in human) "I was never nice, and I've gone too far" Shes saying she was only pretending to be nice, she's not the innocent girl everyone thought she was. "You don't need to be nice....." Well yea. That pretty much speaks for itself. That's just my opinion, hope it helped :) sorry for the super long comment |

I'm gonna go through it bit by bit, and explain what each part means imho. "He had a plan to kill you all along," This could be about God (this kinda ties in with the "Hallelujah" later), or the driver (who may or may not have been drunk, idk) "I was a ghost, I was there at the scene," He was either in the car or he feels that he could've stopped it (I.e. If it was a drunk driver, he could've stopped him driving) "As the embers rise, my hands, Smelled like gasoline," Well, to set fire to stuff you cover it in petrol, right? He feels like he is responsible. If you don't get it, PM me. "So, the headlights murdered my thoughts," Like a rabbitt in the headlights, he froze & couldn't do anything to help "I curse this taste that's on my tongue, This taste will last until I rip it out" This could mean alot of things. I don't think its a literal taste. I think its the feeling, the memory of being there & not being able to help. On the other hand, it could be alcohol, the fact that it impairs your senses so he couldn't save her. (he deffs wasn't the driver) "No, I won't need these gloves, Her bones are withered away, but your ghost will remain." Forensic gloves obviously. I think that's just saying that she's dead, but her memory will forever live on. "You're the only one that wore your seatbelt, We're the only ones that cried, Catastrophic accidents, You're the only one that died." That pretty much speaks for itself. "So keep my casket closed," I think he could be saying he doesn't want to talk about it, he feels like a murderer and he's ashamed of it. His 'casket' could be like the part of his mind that holds the secret. "Your heart beats under the floor, It haunts me in my dreams," This is a reference to "The Tell Tale Heart". I don't really know much about it, but there's a murderer who buried the victim under the floor, & he's haunted by the beating. "Hallelujah, woah, So just believe in me, I'll Never let you down, This was a curse I can say, As you lie in your grave" He said she could believe in him & he would never let her down. But now, because he feels responsible for her death, he sees it as a curse. Again, pm me if u don't get it. And yeah, the rest explains itself. Or if you want more, pm :] Fave band, fave song. This song is obviously (in my opinion) about a fan following their idol, stalking them, becoming their own personal paparazzi. When she says "this photo of us It don't have a price" I think its saying that to the fan, the photo is priceless, & the photo is a metaphor for the moment/ experience with their idol. It is being compared to a pap photo, which is taken only to be sold. The fan/stalker just wants the attention of the star. When she sings "Were plastic but we still have fun" I think it is saying that even though the fan is now just as famous, they are fake, but they are still enjoying their life or somethin lyk that... I really like this song, I feel lyk its one of the most meaningful, complex & esoteric songs on the radio(which I don't really listen to much, I heard this at work), & coming from lady gaga, that's pretty shocking lol |
