this is just such a happy song...not in the sense that it's the most cheerful song around, but it's just impossible not to feel a bit uplifted when you listen to it. it's so optimistic |

obvious content, the song is about the Troubles in nothern ireland. he talks about the men interned in northern ireland at that time - many people believed that these people should not be treated as criminals but as political prisoners. it was released in 1972 about a month after Bloody Sunday, when 27 protesters were shot (13 died) by the army during a march in derry. the song was banned because the Troubles were such a contentious topic (and because Bloody Sunday was (still is) such a controversial topic - there's a lot of debate over whether the army or the IRA fired the first shots, and over the shooting of apparently unarmed men) |
