Nine Inch Nails – Ruiner Lyrics 15 years ago
The Downward Spiral without a doubt is a conceptual album telling a story about a person breaking down emotionally until they are left with nothing. To me this song is very complex, I have several thoughts on what it could be about (Religion, Rape/Sexual Abuse, Conceptual, Drugs, Internal Struggle).

When I first heard this song a few years ago, I initially thought it was about god or a god-like figure oppressing the main voice in the song, and that the main voice was exposing this god, king, etc. for who they truly are (a liar, abuser, etc.). On the surface the chorus can represent a penis, which is often a symbol of power or authority over something as well. I also thought that the end line "you didn't hurt me...." was the god figure responding to the main voice saying that it was unharmed, and remains unstoppable by the main voice.

Another meaning could be some form of sexual abuse. This thought branched off of my original idea of the song being about an oppressor. A person in an authority role sexualy abuses a weaker or younger person and they are left scarred. Eventually the victim exposes this person and the oppressor is arrested, now knowing that justice has been served the victim reflects on this experience and now thinks they are going to be able to heal.

Drugs also come to mind when reading the lyrics and listening to the song. The drugs are controlling the person, and the person is unable to resist. I however am not entirely sure this is the meaning, it could be though.

My last and most current thought on this song is that it is about main voice's internal struggle. The main voice has issues with self-esteem which are being exploited by the main voice's destructive thoughts/tendencies. The person then realizes that they are able to withstand and resist the destructive tendencies.

Aside from the lyrics, the music is masterfully written and the guitar solo is to die for. Nine Inch Nails has been my favorite band for many years and I am looking forward to seeing them live again in the near future.

I agree,
also the lines reinforce the whole addiction/ alcoholism scenario that you mentioned.
"Hey
I'm your life
I'm the one who took you here
Hey
I'm your life
And I no longer care

I'm your dream, make you real
I'm your eyes when you must steal
I'm your pain when you can't feel
sad but true"

I've also heard many similar songs lyrically that are about addiction, one being "Mr. Self Destruct by Nine Inch Nails"

I think it's pretty obvious, but Slug is talking about how fake most mainstream rappers are.
