Black Sabbath – Behind The Wall Of Sleep Lyrics 15 years ago
It is based on Lovecraft's Story. It is a bizarre tale about aliens and consciousness etc. Read it. But also, knowing our spaced out Sabbath boys, they mave have likened the experience of the protagonist to that of opium taking.

It is almost dawn when he is out looking for a woman. Probably means he failed to pull at a nightclub and doesn't want to go home without a screw.

Black Sabbath – Walpurgis Lyrics 15 years ago
Walpirgus is a germanic/nordic festival celebrating witches. It's not really remembered that much anymore--most of the content of it has travelled into Halloween.

perhaps there may be a Gnostic element to it.

A couple of posts suggest Gnostic influences in their songs. If so, it may fuel speculation about satanism and sabbath as 'Satanism' (distinquished from witchcraft), is a form of Gnosticism--i.e. the brand(s) of gnostic thought that inverted every thing to do with Judaism/Chsitianity.

If Sabbath were gnostic then it's a small step from satanism.

Black Sabbath – War Pigs Lyrics 15 years ago
The confusion seems strange.

Facts

1 it's an anti war song that describes the stupidity of those who fight for the rich and the corruption of the rich in sending the poor to die for them

2 it uses biblical imagery--especially the Book of Revelation about the end of the world

Which war seems to be the question. It must have some reference to the Vietnam way. Likely it alludes to the second world war and the first. Birmingham where they are from was bombed to pieces during the war. It also points to end of the world--perhaps they had in mind a battle of Armageddon.

Seems obvious that Ozzy doesn't want it to apply to the current political situation. He has got too much to lose. He was young and energetic when they made this; now he is a media clown.

He was pretty good in the 70's with Sabbath, but he is just a parady of a parody these days. No wonder Toni used to beat the shit out of him in school.

Black Sabbath – Planet Caravan Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it's about travelling through space on this planet which is what happens to all of us. They are perhaps asking the point to such travel/meaning of life.

So they say....but once most people start smoking it, they never stop. It stays in the fat cells for months at a time--most smokers don't go three months without smoking it. Most of us started smoking it when we were about 12/13. I stopped after a few years, but I was the only one to do so. My younger brother started when he was 12. He hasn't stopped. He is now 43. Thirty years of smoking on an almost daily basis.

It's addictive in its own way. Not like smack in which there are physical withdrawls, but it absorbs peoples lives and money and it is often the centre of their lives. But it's only recreational and they can all stop anytime they like.

It's about MJ alright. They simply coined the term from the cigarettes. Ozzy and Bill were the heaviest/longest users in the band. I think they were also the worst drinkers and acid heads. They were all on coke as well--I think around the Sabbath Bloody Sabbath times. I presume they were injecting smack--does anyone have any info?

I have seen that interview. That's exactly the story. Whether it's true or not is another matter. But it's a good tale well told.

They were not openly satanists--although I wonder about Sharon---but I don't think you could call them good Christians. There were Catholics (did Ozzy convert to Judaism?) and wanted to react against their upbringing. If we want to get technical about it, they would be described as hedonists.

I think he must have watched Rosemary's Baby before writing this one.

Black Sabbath – Sabbra Cadabra Lyrics 15 years ago
It seems simple at first this song, but there's probably more to it. I think it was also around this time Ozzy started an affair with Sharon Levy. She was only about 17 at the time. I wonder if it is about her.

Abracadabra is a Hebrew mismash of words--Sharon was Jewish--her father was managing the band.

Who knows?
