Cake – Short Skirt/Long Jacket Lyrics 8 years ago
This song is not about women, it's about men. He's mocking superficial corporate men and what they idealize - this woman is a caricature of that.

Broken Bells – The High Road Lyrics 14 years ago

This song is about Borderline Personality Disorder which is characterized by intense emotional attachments followed by detachment, suicidal thoughts, overindulgence / impulsiveness, depth of moods, and black and white thinking.

All of these are in this song. His fear that a woman he is "invested" in will run amok. The Garden refers to the Garden of Eden of course - or ideal love which is off..."her lips curl on the bow" sounds like oral sex and "not sure if I'm dead or alive" sounds like his indifference...thus the invested attachment followed by indifference after experience the loss of his romantic partner.

"Come on and get the minimum" is a frantic grasp..."so many heads" clearly all the moods and feelings inside of him. "come on and get the overdose" - the impulsive / overindulgent side, with the borderline being the borderline between reality and psychosis or dissociation. Might be a drug reference but still fits in as BPD is characterized by drug abuse.

The soldier lips around the barrel is obviously a reference to suicidal tendencies.

The chorus - the high road is hard to find - meaning he can't get out of it. "It's too late to change your mind" - he's trapped. Say goodbye to your friends - another suicide reference...and "let loss be your guide" - meaning he's trapped by his past pains.

It's a rather depressing song.

Interpol – Evil Lyrics 14 years ago
It took me a while to figure this song out - extremely hard to piece together, but after reading the interpretations on the web, and reading more about Paul Banks, I think I got it. Paul Banks was fascinated with serial killers, and as a literally major in college, probably with a lot of ideas around the inner workings of people.

The references to the Rosemary West killings are pretty clear (not just her name, but the "trial", "cellmate" and "shards under the belly".

Still, it doesn't make sense that this is from Fred West until the final year of his life are looked at. He confessed to the killing pretty quickly - suggesting remorse. And he attempted to make some kind of emotional contact with Rosemary...he tried twice and failed. And a few weeks later, committed suicide.

I think this song is the story of Fred West dealing with the evil he had done, and trying to reach Rosemary...the Biblical references are pretty clear. So this is his story after he committed suicide and what he'd say to her.

The first verse of the song is about embracing Heaven and god. "Heaven restores you in life" - this is a clear reference to being alive and that there is a means to salvation in life. The rest of the verse is about what that is and if she comes with him what she gets - it's the smile on the package, the faces in the sand, the thought that holds you up, their embraces - all the good things in life...the "slow-release" (inner peace) as opposed to the instant and twisted gratification of torturing their victims.

The next verse is his message to her: Hey wait, great smile (his nickname for her?) - have faith and don't deny (Just confess and faith - don't play the victim card)...then again, "but hey who's on trial" An admission he coped out by committing suicide - so he can sympathize with her decision.

Then he confesses to her what his life was about. Being completely alone (a lifespan without a cellmate) searching for a way out...from the trap of just looking the other way to everything he did - all the suffering he caused. That's the root of his "evil". Just look the other way. What was wrong with that?

The next verse describes that world of what could be or could have been - perhaps the afterlife or fantasy existence. "I could take you places....Make a revision to a dream...."

Later on, the line, "You need something to which to care" - I think a reference to how serial killers are considered uncaring.

The next verse talks about their crimes, how they hoped to presume innocence and hope for a sympathetic jury....and whether or not they really loved each other and if that was over - "Is this motion everlasting or do shutters pass in the night"

The final verse mentions that she needs someone to take her there - perhaps him or someone else (earlier - "do you need another man"). and changes the chorus - "...play the other game" a reference to their interaction not involving the girls they tortured and murdered. Suggesting once again, his remorse.

Radiohead – Reckoner Lyrics 15 years ago
The song is pretty clear in meaning. I'm not even Christian ;)

Overall - the song deals with Judgement day - or the end of the world. Also known as "Day of Reckoning" as referred to in the bible.

Therefore - the Reckoner is god. The first line is stating you can't take your life with you - whatever you had is gone, you're "transcending". Your life was about the whims of your programming, your programming to survive - all the emotions, reflexes, fears, tendencies, desires - all of that was your "dance for pleasure". You can't take it with you though.

But "you aren't to blame for that". No, of course not, because you were *programmed* to be that way. That's what life is. Just as a bacteria form colonies or bees do - humans were to do so inevitably as well. Our experiences were inevitable, as part of the human experience.....the senses, both good and bad, "Bittersweet distractor". With a nameless face - likely what Christians label the devil - but it's not manifested - it's nameless because it's our inner demons that he is referring to here.

We are not to blame for that. This is god's compassion for us and all our flaws...a statement that he understands that there was no way we could know better or do better. And thus he is "dedicated" to all human beings...he is loyal to humanity for the suffering and price it pays - the fear and horror of dealing with death - which is the "separation" from life...like "ripples on a blank shore" meaning it's just so matter of fact, so blunt, without explanation, without closure. It's god's message to us for the pain we live, the mistakes we have made, and the death we suffer.

In rainbow refers to the post-apocalyptic end of life...after the flood, a rainbow appears...this is the biblical symbol of the covenant between man and god - that god will never incur such calamity upon mankind again. Here I believe it refers more as a bridge from one life to another. But the covenant aspect also fits with the dedication theme - a symbol of god's loyalty to mankind.

It is a gift - the revelation - permanent afterlife, that god is offering ("take me with you") as he is dedicated to all human beings (not that the song is dedicated to us, but it might very well be). You can't take your previous existence with you, but you can take god with you to someplace else.

There ya go. Enjoy.
