Dream Theater – Beneath The Surface Lyrics 11 years ago
I like this interpretation but, I think you're separating the two people too much. I think both of them are experiencing that slow agonizing death of the relationship.. albeit with different points of view. but, even more notably, this is sung entirely from one person's perspective. So despite everything you and I said about it, this is really just one person's view of how it went down. We could be dead on or way off!

Amen Brother... this song makes me wonder how different my life could have been if I had just confronted certain situations more directly

The intentinoal meaning of the song (that is, DT's interpretation of the lyrics) is completely lost to me because this song describes so perfectly a HUGE chunk of my life and the relationship between me and someone else which caused more than a few personal crises and dilemmi (its the correct word, look it up!) I don't know what anyone else has gone through but this song captured 13 years of complete and total agony (and the conclusion thereof) so well that the first time i listened to it, I had to pull the car over and take a breather before the song even ended.

John Petrucci crashed as a child. Well.. he was in the car.

The rest is based on the story.

I love it... By the grace of God above, everyone survived... RRRRRUUUUAAAAHHHH!!!!

Dream Theater – Wither Lyrics 15 years ago
Just because they are Dream Theater doesn't mean they can't write something a little cliche, man. Not tryin to bash your opinion but I personally think you might consider the possibility that Dream Theater does write the music and the lyrics based on what they feel and what they think is right, nothing more metal than that!

Having said that, I think Dream Theater probably wanted a song that anyone could hear and appreciate, instead of the usual music which takes a special kind of person to appreciate it. Some would call this selling out, I call it being considerate to all the people who are going to hear the single accidentally.

And you are right, I hope... it'll get them some well deserved attention. ^_^

Ugh, I meant to include the fact that the apology was actually a letter which is why i didn't explain what i thought any of the metaphors were... it was pretty close to writers block mixed with sucking it up and apologizing haha

Dream Theater – Wither Lyrics 15 years ago
Well, to clarify, the album is all based on specific events from the life of the writer. Everything here is based on personal experience.

However, having said that, I do agree that this song could be used as a metaphor in many different ways. But to be straightforward, it is written with writer's block as a topic. Take from it what you will...

I have my own meaning for it about a friendship with a fine female fellow that had suffered a tremendous injury... but after a lot of listening to this album, i got motivated to patch that shit up!

For me it was more about just straight up apologizing and how many times i'd tried before. But this song inspired a heart felt apology that was completely different from the others.

This was a fairly recent event

Dream Theater – The Count of Tuscany Lyrics 15 years ago
As the album's longest track, Wilson calls "The Count of Tuscany" "the monster", comparing it to "A Change of Seasons" and cited Pink Floyd as a possible influence.[9] Petrucci wrote the lyrics about a count that frightened him while he visited Tuscany.

That's from wiki... i think its funny that a man as big as JP could be scared. And he was dumb enough to get in the car with a count?

I think the count is probably someone he knows. But, either way, it is so badass that he had an experience that could lead to something this epic.

Dream Theater – Learning to Live Lyrics 15 years ago
The opening lines from the song are a direct lift from the book Atlas Shrugged by noted author Ayn Rand. The first phrase, "There was no time for pain, no energy for anger. Sightlessness of hatred slips away." is paraphrase from the exact quote "He had no time for pain, no energy for anger. Within a few weeks, it was over; the blinding stabs of hatred ceased and did not return." (p.211 of the Centennial Edition) The next phrase in the song, "Walking through winter streets alone, he stops and takes a breath, with confidence and self-control," is similar to the next few sentences in the book.

That entire thing is lifted from wikipedia. But I read that book and it is AWESOME!

Dream Theater – Hollow Years Lyrics 15 years ago
Forgot about the all important chorus! This interpretation is semi-metaphorical

"Carry me to the shoreline
Bury me in the sand
Walk me across the water
And maybe you'll understand"

The concept here is that sometimes we are weak and we fall, we need someone to care for us, to help us out. I love the metaphor of the beach. What he wants you to do, in my opinion, is support him, get him to the shoreline(be there for him), bury him in the sand(take him away from his problems), walk him across the water(take him to your end, there is a vast ocean between the two of you) and maybe you'll understand(because now you have seen BOTH sides).

"Once the stone
You're crawling under
Is lifted off your shoulders
Once the cloud that's raining
Over your head disappears
The noise that you'll hear
Is the crashing down of Hollow Years"

This could be any number of people speaking. The concept, I think, is this:

When you are finally relieved of your pain, when someone finally comes and sets you free from your personal hell, when you are released from the cage of your troubles.. you will realize that it was all meaningless. That pain and suffering is gone and worthless to you now. This is now, that was then.

This does kind of support the suicide theory, as all the bad goes away at once when you die(theoretically) but, again, I don't feel the verses support the idea of a suicide. Occam's razor makes me think relationship

Dream Theater – Hollow Years Lyrics 15 years ago
Probably the relationship(presumably a marriage) was one sided in a sense that he fell out of love with her(and maybe in love with someone else which would help explain more of the inspiration from previous albums to SFAM but, I am stretching on that one)and he just never had the balls to talk to her, he eventually walks out, takes the easy path which is divorce.

She was in love, she cared about him but, she is a woman scorned like which fury hell hath no. She walks out on everything because she just cant take that shit(and she shouldn't hav to! haha).

I think the crashing down of hollow years is more about the girl than the man. When he walks out, she realizes it was all just a hollow, pointless relationship. I don't think she was a daughter because the first few lines of her verse imply that she was in love, in my opinion. I think this song is about a woman who hurts, plain and simple.

That's my interpretation and of course, I take it on a more personal level.

And once more... JP's live solo is definitely one of the best ever!

Dream Theater – Forsaken Lyrics 15 years ago
It's cool that someone else is thinking of this album as a single story. Just for shits and giggles! But yeah, this song is straight up about a vampire, it isn't a metaphor.

But if I were to use the vampire as a metaphor, it would be something about false hope/love or the promise of satan... I keep it in the elusive nature, no one knows what they are getting into when they fall for a vampire... except for the chick who falls for blade...

Also, if I were going to relate it to the story of the album(which doesn't exist but I will talk about it anyways)... she would relate towards the protagonist of the album(the weary preacher man who sells his soul) falling for this siren who could either be a vampire or someone who brings him closer to the 7th circle(as eluded by the ministry of lost souls)...

Or she could be a siren whom he falls for and later in track 7(ministry) he sacrifices himself to save her... which in essence COULD be him trying to save the devil(in a way) which propels us into IPOE2 and the circle.

Either way, if this album were to be one continuous story, this vampiress would DEFINITELY be the female character referred to in the ministry of lost souls

Dream Theater – Endless Sacrifice Lyrics 15 years ago
No need to bash him just cuz you don't like him man. I won't give my opinion cuz I don't wanna start some kinda argument but, if you don't like him, at least be respectful about it. The man did a lot, whether you like it or not, he is important in metal history. So dislike him if you want but, give him the respect he deserves.

Dream Theater – As I Am Lyrics 15 years ago
First off, I didn't read every single post so this may have already been said but, John Petrucci wrote these lyrics, not Mike Portnoy.

Secondly, the lyrics in this album were of a much deeper meaning and this song was meant to sound like Metallica in terms of heavy and ridiculous shred. The song was created in John's head (according to his interviews) based on some awkward incident between him and the Queensryche guitarist after they toured together and covered pink floyd comfortably numb. He critiqued john's playing as too fast and emotionless (as many people do... though I totally feel emotion from a lot of his shred).

The song evolved from a personal comeback to an attack on people in general who cannot handle that which this band has created. Not to the critics but to the antagonistic people who completely disbar this group as musicians simply because they disagree with the style or technique or what have you.

That is my version of what JP said in his interviews. Though he never cited that incident, I do recall him mentioning some... "interesting moments" which are implied to be that situation which has been mentioned in the past.

Damn I type a LOT

To quote Mike Portnoy, "These are some fuckin METAL lyrics man!"

What's really fun is to take this whole album and create a single story out of it. You almost don't have to think to do it. it's all very good v evil... it lends itself well to a single character concept.

I agre about these lyrics being relate-able to a time in our lives where we give in like that. However, Petrucci has stated that all the lyrics in this album are purely written as fiction. And I loove the idea that this would be during the apocalyptic time of the tribulation. To be more into it, instead of simply choosing satan, the lyrics could suggest he took the mark of the beast and sold his soul. Furthermore, I feel that Heretic is almost a conversation between the Heretic and Satan

Dream Theater – Raise the Knife Lyrics 15 years ago
In a more general sense, ignoring the intent of MP in writing these lyrics, one person's side about a breakup or a friendship ending... an argument in general. I would take it to represent two sides from one person's point of view.

To explain that a little clearer, the fictional breakup leaves the man hurt by the woman.

"Have I thanked you for your time?
Or will your life go unrewarded
Again?
Never asking for a dime
You just gave all of yourself
Until I turned my back on you
My friend"

This could be the man saying how he feels the woman treated him... its like "Oh blah blah look at me, my name is girl, im sooo special" that kinda thing but more serious.

"I'll take the blame for these things that I say
'Cause I had the heart and the will and the courage to stay
Every day
I won't walk away"

This might represent the man saying he loves her and he won't give up on her, he'll always be there for her when she needs him and he did what he could to make her happy and such. and now he's just going to tell her the truth cuz that's what she needs to hear.

That is my quick summary, i feel some of it should be left to your own interpretation.

I will say, though, that "artist" and "digests" are symbolic to me and that makes it easier to see that. They could both be realistic as the artist would represent her as an artist and digests would represent music she gave him. Or it could be more of a symbol that is kind of too personal for me to post on here.

anyways, that's my food for thought. I rarely take lyrics at their face value or their true value. What good is a song that is upset about kevin or a crew member. How does that connect me and my life to the song?

First post. Hope it was well received
